The new rotation of freebies is live and this week we’ve got two new titles to claim for free from the Epic Games Store: Rising Hell, a vertical platformer rogue-lite and Slain: Back From Hell, a heavy-metal inspired arcade combat game with a lot of gore and some interesting puzzle elements. Without further ado, let’s jump right in:
If you’re a fan of pixel art 2D platformers, Rising Hell is a gorgeous little gem that you definitely don’t want to miss out on. Originally released in May 2021 and developed by Tahoe Games, Rising Hell has you literally climbing out of procedurally-generated Hell itself whilst avoiding the grim fate of permadeath.
The game features several epic boss battles with famous demons such as Dagon and Beelzebub but it’s not a one-and-done. Aside from the campaign, there’s different challenge modes (with leaderboards!) for you to try your luck in, seeing how you compare with other players.
If that’s not enough, you can also unlock different characters, each with their own playstyle. It’s definitely a game you can sink a good chunk of time into! The soundtrack’s guide a banger too, gives me some Guilty Gear meets Phantom of the Opera vibes.
Slain: Back From Hell
Continuing with that seems to be a theme this week, Slain: Back From Hell has you playing as Bathoryn, a doomed hero (whatever that means!) who seeks to liberate six realms from six overlords. Fight through gruesome pixel art hordes of monsters and avoid a plethora of creatively deadly traps while wielding three elemental weapons, each one able to exploit the weaknesses of certain enemies.
The game takes about six hours to finish, although it’s unclear whether that also takes into account the healthy bunch of secrets hidden about. There’s boss fights of all shapes and sizes as well, so be prepared for anything!
The soundtrack is composed by Curt Victor Bryant, formally part of Celtic Frost and the game was developed by Steel Mantis and published by Digerati.
Rising Hell and Slain: Back From Hell are free to claim until next Thursday. Next week, we’ve got ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove!, a rogue-like adventure with… hip-hop?! We’ll talk more about that when the time comes!
