The Rewards Track - How Long to Get to Level 50, 644000 Experience Required to Get to Level 150

Published on November 12, 2020 by

Update December  17, 2020 - Please see the new numbers in our new article here. The post below has not been modified for historical accuracy.

We've put together a handy table with all the experience requirements and rewards for the reward track, Hearthstone's new progression system.

  • The variable rewards go up until level 50 at which point they become a simple 150 Gold every level.
  • You earn experience by completing weekly quests, daily quests, and the gameplay Darkmoon Faire achievements.
  • You also earn experience by just playing the game. The amount varies per mode.

Blizzard has stated in ranked play, you'll earn around 400 XP per hour (wins give more XP). If you wanted to hit the max level of the system, 150, it would therefore require you to play 1610 hours of ranked Hearthstone! That's 67 days straight which is definitely possible during the 4-month long cycle of the pass, and it doesn't include the achievements and dailies that you would complete along the way.

How Long to Get to Level 50?

In total, you're going to need to receive 196200 experience. We need to make a few assumptions though before we can give you any great math. For the sake of sanity, we'll assume the following:

  • Every daily quest you receive is 800 XP (the lowest possible).
  • You are playing ranked Hearthstone which grants 400 XP per hour.

So, how long is it going to take?

If you were to simply play games, you're looking at 20.4375 Days of gameplay. (196200 (XP for 50) / 400 (XP/Hour) / 24 (Hours Per Day)). Obviously, we're going to be doing much more than that though! This ends up being a difficult calculation to make though because there are a lot of factors involved, one being your collection.

Experience From Achievements

There are several achievements that reward experience and they are all from the Darkmoon Faire. We're assuming the XP portion of these achievements will be removed when the next expansion launches as to not make it too easy to level up in that expansion, but they're available now so let's use them.

  • Each class has 5 different achievements.
    • The first two achievements each reward 200 XP.
    • The third achievement has 3 tiers rewarding 100 XP, 100XP, and 500 XP.
    • The total experience earned is 1100 per class.
  • There are 20 Neutral achievements.
    • The experience rewards are different for each achievement.
    • Completing all these achievements rewards 3800 XP.

With those achievements in mind, we get an easy total!

  • 11000 XP earned from all class achievements.
  • 3800 XP earned from Neutral achievements.
  • 14800 XP earned from Darkmoon Faire Achievements.

Completing all these achievements gets you, from level 1 to level 14.

The only downside to the achievements is that they require having specific cards and you need to be playing every class. As I said, this is difficult to calculate!

Experience From Daily & Weekly Quests

Each week you can complete three weekly quests starting on each Monday and every day you are given a new Daily.

  • 1 Weekly Quest will always be worth 2500 XP.
  • 2 Weekly Quests will be worth 1750 XP.
  • Your dailies are worth at least 800 XP.

With the above in mind, we're looking at 6000 XP per week earned from the weekly quests and an additional 5600 XP (at the minimum) from dailies.

Completing your weeklies and dailies for the week gives you (at the minimum) 11600 XP.

The Final Count(down)

We're going to assume that you play Hearthstone one hour per day to complete your daily quest and to make progression on your weekly ones. Assuming that is ranked play, because it is the highest value of XP per hour, that is 2800 XP per week.

So now we've got some baseline XP values to work with.

  • Quests: 11600 XP per Week.
  • Achievements: 14800 XP (once).
  • Ranked Play: 2800 XP per Week.

That gives us a total of 14400 XP per week and a one time boost of 14800 XP. With us needing 196200 XP to get to 50, we can knock that down to 181400 XP after the completion of achievements. This lets us solve the rest easy.

181400 / 14400 (XP per Week) = 12.59 Weeks

With it taking just over 12 weeks, that's roughly 3 months or the full duration of the pass. So if you play an hour of Hearthstone a day and make sure you complete your quests and achievements each week, you'll definitely hit level 50 to get that sweet alternate hero prize.

  • Does anyone know: does playing casual duels and tavern brawl award experience? From my limited experience on day 1 of the new system, it appears not. I tried to complete the “play three games as a demon hunter“ quest  in the tavern brawl and it neither awarded quest completion ticks or experience. I played a few duels and also didn’t see the bar moving on the progress track. I did confirm the bar was moving when I played some BGs and some ranked later. Seems weird not to award experience in those other game modes

  • So I went along to have a casual look at the xp gains from achievements and its conditions.

I wouldn't count of getting much from it. Some of them are pretty ridiculous, like getting Redeemed Pariah to have 10 attack (I already think the minion sucks, and now the devs seem to think its possible to ever stick it on board and get it to that high an attack). Others are pretty much walled out - requiring specific cards (legendaries) to ever have even the slightest chance of making it. And every class has its own crazed achievements. So if I don't particularly want to play, say, shaman, I would miss out on the xp from those achievements.

Not sure for now if you can complete this while battling a friend (which will trivialize the achievements to be honest). But if not, then I'll say the best estimate is that you'll only managed about a third of them, if at all.

Bragging rights nothing. Completing each class achievements should award a gold medal that is visible when playing so everyone can see you would have willingly sold one of your own kidneys to get these done.

    • Isn't the entire point of achievements to do something difficult? If they were all things everyone could get in 10 minutes then it would be a hollow victory. Besides, you are getting XP just for spending the time trying so at least you are paid for the procedure as well as the kidney.

As for them being walled behind requiring specific cards, that's pretty much unavoidable with set-specific achievments. I would say the reality of this is a better reason for people to not expect to get them all than how difficult some of them are.

        Specific Legendary cards.

At least bring Whizbang the Wonderful back to standard as an ever green card to make it possible if the achievements give XP.

        • Sure, but not all the achievements require legendaries (it looked like that was 1 per class), and you can hardly blame them for making achievements related to utilising the fanciest effects.

Regarding Whizbang, I recall them asking if there were any other cards we'd like to see added to Classic in the rework, i.e. they were already considering doing that with Whizbang. That's not guaranteed of course, but it may yet happen.

  • I think it would be really interesting to compare these calculations to the situation if you buy the tavern pass.

I thought the 10% xp boost was a bit low but I see now that it jumps to 15 and a bit later to 20%.

    • AnonymousUser's Avatar

yeah, I was a little surprised they didnt mention how much faster it will be with tavern pass, I'd assume probably 1-3 weeks faster to get to 50

  • Are  you also doing an article on the new Duels HP, starting treasures aswell as the passive and active treasures? I'm really interested in them but couldn't find the list anywhere.

  • Even if we get to LV50 which requires way more work than it did just doing daily quests for gold, you still end up around 4000 gold short. So overall this really effing hurts casual players. Looking at the reward track, this will eventually turn into a slow slog where even completing a full week''s worth of quests is barely awarding a single level up.

So fro mwhat it looks, the promise we won't get less than before was total BS.

    • I disagree. This article says that you hit level 50 at the beginning of the fourth month, leaving you 3.5 weeks left of pure gold earning. Assuming the absolute minimums (like OP did), on the old system, you would get 6,000 gold per expac (I guess a little bit more with the 10 gold bonuses, but that isn't super relevant). Extrapolating from OP's results, you can figure out that, in the new system, you would actually end up earning around 5,750 gold per expac - a smaller number, but fairly close all things considered. I, for one, have a feeling that actual averages and not using the absolute minimums of 800XP/50G would benefit the new system more because it would give you more time in that sweet sweet 50+ range.

      • I earn around 7000 to 8000 gold per expansion untl now so yeah, this is still a massive downgrade, no matter how you look at it.

        • Well, I bet you don't do only 50G quests, do you? Also, do you play more than one hour a day? Those are the assumptions that this article makes. If you averaged closer to 55G-60G quests per day on the old system (like I did), you would have to redo all of the math for the new system as well

          • I may play more than 1 hour every now and then but then there are days where I don't play because let's face it, Hearthstone is not the only game out there and sometimes you just got other stuff to do. I average an hour a day I would say if you dont count some dabbling in the solo content for fun.

          • Okay, so I just roughly did some quick math with averaging all daily quests. The actual average for quests (only rerolling the play with a friend) is slightly over 1000, so I am just going to use 1000.

Once again assuming that you only play 1 hour a day, you should hit level 66. That would grant you 6600G for doing the absolute minimum. This is not counting the bonus XP for winning because idk what the bonus is lol.

If I compare this to my typical daily quest (about an average of 57 or 58 G), we see that the new system is better when the 10G / 3 wins is taken out (feel free to include that in both scenarios if you know).

Something to take away from this also is that I constantly rerolled 50G quests in order to get my average so high, yet the math for the new system is not averaged around rerolls (tho idk if that would really change anything with the vastly overwhelming amount of 1000XP quests there are).

    • are u counting the packs it awards along the progression lvl?

      • those packs dont really matter. I want to be able to play all the decks I want to build fro mthe start so I will craft what im missing. after that I want to save solely for the next expansion, not exchange gold rewards for old packs.

      • They advertised it as being the same, if not better, when the packs are not included. Also, no one wants to unlock a pack two months into an expac, that's when we are saving gold for the next expac.

  • Some of the achievements for Duels also award XP - they are easily distinguishable by the chest sign

  • Do you guys understand how the yellow Achievements points translate into Experience points?

    • Achievement Points themselves do not award experience.

Some achievements will reward point achievement points and XP. You can make the distinction by looking at the achievement itself. If it has a chest, it contains XP and AP.
