The Rewards Track - How Long to Get to Level 50, 644000 Experience Required to Get to Level 150

Published 5 years ago by (Updated 4 years, 11 months ago)

Update December  17, 2020 - Please see the new numbers in our new article here. The post below has not been modified for historical accuracy.

We've put together a handy table with all the experience requirements and rewards for the reward track, Hearthstone's new progression system.

  • The variable rewards go up until level 50 at which point they become a simple 150 Gold every level.
  • You earn experience by completing weekly quests, daily quests, and the gameplay Darkmoon Faire achievements.
  • You also earn experience by just playing the game. The amount varies per mode.

Blizzard has stated in ranked play, you'll earn around 400 XP per hour (wins give more XP). If you wanted to hit the max level of the system, 150, it would therefore require you to play 1610 hours of ranked Hearthstone! That's 67 days straight which is definitely possible during the 4-month long cycle of the pass, and it doesn't include the achievements and dailies that you would complete along the way.

How Long to Get to Level 50?

In total, you're going to need to receive 196200 experience. We need to make a few assumptions though before we can give you any great math. For the sake of sanity, we'll assume the following:

  • Every daily quest you receive is 800 XP (the lowest possible).
  • You are playing ranked Hearthstone which grants 400 XP per hour.

So, how long is it going to take?

If you were to simply play games, you're looking at 20.4375 Days of gameplay. (196200 (XP for 50) / 400 (XP/Hour) / 24 (Hours Per Day)). Obviously, we're going to be doing much more than that though! This ends up being a difficult calculation to make though because there are a lot of factors involved, one being your collection.

Experience From Achievements

There are several achievements that reward experience and they are all from the Darkmoon Faire. We're assuming the XP portion of these achievements will be removed when the next expansion launches as to not make it too easy to level up in that expansion, but they're available now so let's use them.

  • Each class has 5 different achievements.
    • The first two achievements each reward 200 XP.
    • The third achievement has 3 tiers rewarding 100 XP, 100XP, and 500 XP.
    • The total experience earned is 1100 per class.
  • There are 20 Neutral achievements.
    • The experience rewards are different for each achievement.
    • Completing all these achievements rewards 3800 XP.

With those achievements in mind, we get an easy total!

  • 11000 XP earned from all class achievements.
  • 3800 XP earned from Neutral achievements.
  • 14800 XP earned from Darkmoon Faire Achievements.

Completing all these achievements gets you, from level 1 to level 14.

The only downside to the achievements is that they require having specific cards and you need to be playing every class. As I said, this is difficult to calculate!

Experience From Daily & Weekly Quests

Each week you can complete three weekly quests starting on each Monday and every day you are given a new Daily.

  • 1 Weekly Quest will always be worth 2500 XP.
  • 2 Weekly Quests will be worth 1750 XP.
  • Your dailies are worth at least 800 XP.

With the above in mind, we're looking at 6000 XP per week earned from the weekly quests and an additional 5600 XP (at the minimum) from dailies.

Completing your weeklies and dailies for the week gives you (at the minimum) 11600 XP.

The Final Count(down)

We're going to assume that you play Hearthstone one hour per day to complete your daily quest and to make progression on your weekly ones. Assuming that is ranked play, because it is the highest value of XP per hour, that is 2800 XP per week.

So now we've got some baseline XP values to work with.

  • Quests: 11600 XP per Week.
  • Achievements: 14800 XP (once).
  • Ranked Play: 2800 XP per Week.

That gives us a total of 14400 XP per week and a one time boost of 14800 XP. With us needing 196200 XP to get to 50, we can knock that down to 181400 XP after the completion of achievements. This lets us solve the rest easy.

181400 / 14400 (XP per Week) = 12.59 Weeks

With it taking just over 12 weeks, that's roughly 3 months or the full duration of the pass. So if you play an hour of Hearthstone a day and make sure you complete your quests and achievements each week, you'll definitely hit level 50 to get that sweet alternate hero prize.

  • This is disappointing. We were told to expect a similar level of rewards with the same amount of time spent. Through quest completion alone (negligible number of wins) I could count on having 7000+ gold to spend on launch day. Packs that you pick up slowly post-launch don't cut it, worse still if they're from older expansions. And even after converting packs to their equivalent in gold, the numbers still fall short.

Agreed on all your points.  I've said this before, but I am somewhat displeased that when initial concerns were raised by the community about the new system a few months ago we were given these reassuring promises:

Assuming you play the same amount and have the same quest completion rate, you shouldn't earn less gold or non-gold in the new system. In nearly all circumstances you should be earning slightly more gold and more non-gold (packs, etc).

Quests give you experience, which helps you level up. Leveling up gives you rewards, most of which is gold. Gold gains should be roughly the same amount of 'immediate' in the new system as in the old system.

On my 3 accounts just playing 3 games where it didn't matter win or lose in casual every few days was enough to net over 7200g on each.   Now I'll have to put all my time into just 1 account, retire the other 2, and even then I'll need to get to level 70 to get a similar amount of gold.  This is because even if you put in the work to get to level 50 it's only worth 4200g.

Even if I can manage that and endure the new grinding feel of the game, somehow I have to fund more packs for the mini-expac when I should be saving for the next full expansion.  3 times a year.

New system is less generous and at the same time game has been made significantly more expensive.  Don't be fooled by the initial wave of easy rewards - it doesn't last.

  • After some testing yesterday, "play X class" quests can be done via conceding, which was not possible before. This significantly shortens time spent in the game for those who do not have the time but still want to do their dailies. You can try and re-roll into these and then bulk-quest once every 3 days for some super fast completion.

  • No thanks.  I think this is where I get off the Hearthstone train.

  • I don't understand why you guys are so happy about this new System. You have to play a lot to do the same amount of golds.

I'm a worker and a father and I used to play like 20min everyday for the daily quests and a couple of hours in the weekends (not every weekends) and I was still able to do 7/8k golds. Now with the same effort I should take like 4.5k and some packs of the current expansion(almost useless packs) .

Moreover they added this season pack for 20euros (not included on the 80euros bundle) and another mini sets which I think will be at least 15/20 euros.

We went from 50/80 bundle every 4 months to  50/80 bundle + 20 pass + miniSets.

We are paying more and playing more and getting the same we used to have before

    • The concern here about the cost of the mini set is certainly valid, but I can't help but wonder how important the set will be in terms of the game's economics. Using Galakrond's Awakening as the template for rarity distribution, it seems like the mini set will mostly be made up of common and rare cards. Thanks to duplicate protection, it should take only a small number of extra packs to gather up those common and rare cards cards, and then you can use dust to create any missing epic or legendary card that happens to be relevant to the metagame. Most of the high-rarity cards from that mini set were good in certain archetypes, but were never meta-defining, so I'm not really worried that the incremental cost will be all that high from a practical standpoint.

    • I’m a dad, and I probably play 20-60 minutes a day. Just calculating 7 daily quests and 3 weekly quests every week, times 16 weeks between expansions, plus extra XP for play time, wins, and achievements, I estimate that I’d make it to about rank 60. Now that the new day has started and I see that we get MULTIPLE daily quests every day, I expect to go even farther! (Edit: Never mind. I misread the new interface. Just 1 daily per day.) The gold plus the free packs and legendary cards seems slightly better than are at least as good asI would have had before, though it’s not the clear improvement I’d hoped for.

I don’t think it got more expensive. The pass is mainly for cosmetics. The XP bonus will give you some extra packs, but it doesn't change things significantly compared to spending that money directly in the shop. That can be considered strictly optional.

I do have a few concerns: Will they still give us legendary quests with free packs when the expansion launches? They might not since there are a bunch of free packs at the start of the track. If they don’t, that’s stingier. Also, I’m hearing mixed comments about whether you earn rewards for casual, brawl, and friend matches. If those don’t give you the XP, then this will be a lot worse for some people.

      • What im most "concerned" about is whether the legendary from the Rank1 reward of Reward Track is the one we would get for free when expansion launches, or if it is an extra one.

If it is the same one, just gifted via different means, than that is super lame and actually lessens the total value of entire reward path. If it is an extra legendary, than it is really nice and adds quite a lot of value.

I guess we'll see in few days.

        • AnonymousUser's Avatar

If it's not the 1 we would have gotten anyway I'll be surprised.

  • My numbers plus calculations for Tavern Pass:

    - The 223,000 for quests if you complete everything during the expansion seems a pretty unassailable number to start with.

    - Then add the achievements, but most of us aren't going to complete near to all of them, so I think 10,000 is a fair number to add for someone trying to complete them but not going all out to do the really tough ones.

    - Finally add the XP from time played. An hour a day is far less than my average but an ok base to work from. They say ~400 per hour for ranked but someone here already said they got 120 for 20+ minutes. I'm going with 350 per hour for now. So for 121 hours that's 42,350.

    - Add it all up and you've got 275,350. Let's just say 275,000, which gets you exactly to level 68. That gets you 6900 gold + all the other stuff

    - The Tavern Pass gets you +10% XP immediately and then +15% at 5750, which you can get to on day 1, then +20% XP at 89,000. That's a tad less than a third of 275,000 so lets say you get to 35 at about a third of the way through the expansion. So the Tavern Pass gives you +15% XP from almost day one and then for the last 2/3 of the expansion you're at +20%. I think that adds up to about +18% XP over the course of the expansion. So add 18% to 275,000 for the total XP in the expansion with the Tavern Pass. That gives you 324,500 XP total, which gets you exactly to level 79.

    - So if the above calculations for the Tavern Pass are correct (for an hour a day of play, completing all quests and completing most achievements) then it gives you +11 levels of experience, which is +1650 gold (16 packs), as well as all the cosmetics.

    - 16 packs plus the cosmetics seems like an alright deal for $20. Having said that....I would like the Tavern Pass twice as much if that damn coin was golden and animated! I was so hyped for the Darkmoon Coin! But it not being animated is a big downer!!

    • Quote From Shwarzinator

Very interesting. I was leaning towards not getting the Tavern Pass, partly to set a precedent for myself that I just don't need all the cosmetics. But if I'm expecting to get about 16 packs worth of extra gold for £17 anyway (which is about the normal price in the shop, even if that is overpriced) then that really changes the maths.

    • Nice post. That's about what I calculated too, though I'm not sure how the XP per game is calculated. Also, it might be that the XP from achievements does not get the Tavern pass bonus. At least for me, the quests in the log show a green, increased XP reward, while the chests in the achievements do not.

Also, I think they could add some card backs or hero skins as reward beyond level 50, lets say 75, 100, 125, 150. Don't even have to be new ones, they could just make that a way to earn cosmetics that you might have missed before. And wouldn't cost Blizzard anything.

      • Most people who play the game regularly will pass 50 so yeah I'd like to see rewards past there too. Hero skins will never happen for that but a card back to tell people "yeah I got to 150 in Darkmoon beesh come at me" would be pretty sweet.

Quick question: casual previously awarded no gold right? And now it awards no XP for time played?

        • I think you still got 10 gold for three wins in casual under the old system, not sure how that works now.

  • Now this is what I'm talking about! Thanks for doing all this work.

  • I'm a little less excited about getting the alternate coin now that I see it's not golden and animated. Why wouldn't they make it animated if that's the only way you can get it?

    • AnonymousUser's Avatar

because, as it has always been, there is only one way to get a golden animated coin and that is to have a full golden deck

  • Fun fact: you can already do 2 Darkmoon Faire achievements: Ride Together, Die Together (for Hunter, just activate a Toxic Reinforcements) and Two Punch Man (for Shaman, equip a Doomhammer and cast 2 Rockbiter Weapons, go face).

edit: seems like it does not trigger in constructed Casual mode.

    • Also, there is a Hunter one (Ride together, die together: Control 3 identical deathrattle minions) clearly hinting towards Deathrattle Hunter but I just got it with Warrior ⚔️

      • Yeah I already mentioned that. :) It's wierd it triggers even if you play Warrior tho...
