How to win going second?

Submitted 2 years, 11 months ago by

Hi, I've been grinding Arena again recently and I find it basically impossible to win when going second, especially in a tempo matchup. Any tips for this?

Depends on your draft, generally when on coin, your best recovery turn is turn 3, where you can coin a 4-drop into another 4-drop, or something akin to that.

There isnt really an easy answer to this question, there is a lot of variables in any given matchup: your deck, number of wins for the current game, what you have in your hand, what you have in your hand compared to your deck, who is your opponent, what cards are in the arena pool (what to expect), your experience etc.

Yeah, generally in all things Arena "Listen to sinti" is the best advice I can give. The only thing I can add is to emphasize that the timing of the coin-counterpush is the most important thing in the Arena when on the coin. Push too early and the two two-drops get brushed aside without difficulty. Wait too long and your opponent can topdeck lethal even if it works. And always have your plays planned out for the coin turn and the turn after, because you will never topdeck your solution for the next turn.

Draft some comeback cards and a good curve. Generally, the more comeback cards you have, the greedier you can be with your curve. Analyze your deck before you start playing. How does my curve look like? How many removals do I have? Does my deck have a clear power spike? I'm sure you can think of more questions to ask yourself.

The mulligan is also very important, but really deck dependant so hard to say something about it. Usually, I tend to mulligan for curve minions below 4 mana and a single comeback card is often a keep as well. That comeback card can also be of higher mana cost, but again, that is deck dependant. Ideally, you want to use your coin as soon as you can play curve minions back to back (to back) and if that isn't an option you have most certainly fallen behind and you're required to coin out your comeback card.

That might sound straightforward, but it's not. These days almost all minions do something extra aside from being a pile of stats. Rush, poisonous, pings, board clears, you name it, are all common sights in Arena and can disrupt your plan tremendously. The only way to be better prepared for this is to play a lot so you get to know the meta and get a feeling of what you can expect.

I'm still struggling too as I find this meta really hard to read. It has fast decks that kill you on turn 5. Other decks seem to never run out of removal. There decks that keep on discovering threats for you to deal with. Three different kinds of decks, but they have one thing in common: the card quality is through the roof.

Thanks for the answers everyone! I was having a lot of trouble figuring out the meta as well right now, and it feels like I just get overwhelmed way too easily when going second despite cards like Shivarra existing
