Using Merc Coins

So few days in now we've all most likely accumulated some coins for characters we don't have right? So my question is do we use them to make the merc or just wait and pray for them from packs? On one hand you get the merc and can mysterious stranger their coins, on the other if you get them from the pack you can use all those coins as opposed to grinding them. So what's your guys' opinions use the coins to make the man and grind or hope you get them from a pack and use all the coins you already have?

Self proclaimed good at battlegrounds
I'm not a good person to ask because I own all but 4 Mercenaries, but I can say that I plan to wait on the last few until I get them from a pack. It seems silly to me to drop 500 coins on a Legendary Merc; that's a lot of coins that could have went toward building the character up.
If you intend to buy packs and can wait, then its better to save up the coin.
But mercs being a synergistic game, getting a specific merc now might be better overall for your enjoyment. For example, the murloc build is probably centered around old murk-eye, mutanus, and morgl. You can try swapping around, but I found that having these three together really makes the murloc build work. Since there's not many murlocs about, if you absolutely want to play murlocs you just need all three of them, and if you have the coin for that last murloc merc, then why not? Given that the packs juggles around three rarities, and then three different portraits of each merc, it might take quite a while before you chance upon that specific merc you want.
Some are also cheaper than others. Common mercs are only worth 300 coins, which really isn't much when you think about it. Wish theres a way to disenchant shit we dont need for stuff we actually want.
I plan to use coins to craft some legendaries, especially those I'm not super interested in since that makes it more likely to get the others in packs, when I'll have the spare coins to upgrade them.
I'll probably wait to get epics in packs though, as the 8 I'm missing will likely turn up long before I'm done opening packs for legendaries. It's so easy to get all the rares that I assume they're not a problem anyway.
If it's a rare merc, don't craft it since you should be able to open all of the rare ones relatively quickly. Other than that I think it is just a question of whether or not you are willing to wait. In the long run it is better to wait to open them from packs, but in a lot of cases if it is a character you really want, you are probably better off just crafting them so you can actually play with them and enjoy them.
Carrion, my wayward grub.
I agree here, even epic mercenaries seem to be easy enough to get ahold. Though, not as easy as rare ones.
Legendary ones though are gonna take some time if not crafted.

I have opened more than 110 packs welcome bundle included and i have all rare and all epic ton of skins but i missed 8 legendaries mercs
I think it's not worth burn more golds on packs since you can open legendary skin over missing merc so i decided to grind the coin and craft the remaining few legendaries i don't have.
I have another problem with mercenary coins and I have contacted Blizzard multiple times for this. It turns out that sometimes I only receive coins in my packs, however this is not stated anywhere on their website that this happens. I dont own every single portrait of the same rarity and therefore a portrait should be included in every pack.
Do you guys have the same problem?
PS: The GM's are nice as always, but the solution is horrible (as always). They are blaming me for being confused.
I have gotten many packs that are Coin-only; the chance of this happening increased as my number of missing Mercs decreased. Not as fun as opening a new Merc, but I get it.
I believe the situation is that there's only a percent-chance of opening a portrait: it's not a guarantee to open one just because you're out of Mercs. It needs to flag "oh, did you obtain a Rare/Epic/Legendary Merc?" then separately rolls to see if "did you obtain a portrait of that rarity?" goes off. If both are Yes, then you get the portrait. If the latter is a No, but the first one is a Yes, then you get a new Merc; if they're both No, because you have all the Rares or whatever, then you just get Coins.
Portraits are like golden Hearthstone cards: just because you have all the Commons, that doesn't mean you'll start only pulling golden Commons. The difference is that instead of getting a regular Common dupe, you're getting random Coins.
Thanks for te explanation. Would be nice if official Blizzard channels explained it that way, it is now stated as I assumed it was
I have the same problem and I'm sure it was communicated that this should not happen. There should be a Merc or Portrait in every pack
Frosty found this on reddit, it might give you an idea how the pack openings actually works and why you sometimes get just coins: https://old.reddit.com/r/hearthstone/comments/q9wde9/mercenaries_pack_opening_flow_chart_by_ridiculous/

That flowchart is spot-on. The game really should NOT be using the same animations for this as for Hearthstone cards. They need to visually differentiate the guaranteed slot from the four random slots, and also give a visual of your duplicate merc being converted into coins.
