How is Kayn Sunfury still in standard and seeing no play?

Kayn Sunfury Card Image

The card seems absolutely busted in a high tempo high damage deck like DH.

So why is it seeing absolutely no play?

Is it not actually in standard?

Because dhunter can't actually maintain tempo, having been nerfed so many times and its best cards rotated away from the core set. There's no tempo dhunter in standard, and the only nearest equivalent would be deathrattle dhunter, which doesn't need this because their minions are sticky and Illidari Inquisitor is a thing.

Fel dhunter does way more damage and does not usually require a taunt buster, so no kayn there as well.

Kayn Sunfury is only ever useful not because it has charge but because it allowed you to ignore taunts. During stormwind, when Lion's Frenzy OTK was still meta, kayn was used precisely for this purpose. Outside of that, let's be honest here, kayn only deals 3 damage. Even a simple Relentless Pursuit does more damage.

Its actually funny, because the class started out being viable in nearly every archetype imaginable, particularly in dishing out tempo. Then after barrens its like team5 just gave up on them being an aggro class and suddenly its all combo and spells. Even if you're wanting to build a minion-based deck it'll nearly always be a deathrattle archetype with boars. Looking at the sunken city set, I doubt that will change anytime soon

There's literally an aggro demon hunter deck out right now (prestor aggro dh) but okay

Kayn doesn't see play because there are no big taunt minions that see play. That's literally it. It's a 4 mana 3/4 that deals 3 in this meta which isn't good enough.

Just think about it. The only deck that has big taunts in this meta is libram paladin, which doesn't see play. So there's no reason for Kayn to be used.

It is still in Standard, but about to rotate out, because it's in Ashes of Outland... Unless they put it in Core Set 2022.

Yes, it is a decent card. It got worse over time, because of power creep in recent expansions.

My guess is that 4 mana to deal 3 damage isn't good enough anymore, the card is too slow. And there's not that many taunts, so the effect of ignoring Taunt isn't that useful.

    Meanwhile, cards like:

    1. Stormstrike - 3 dmg (to minions) + 3 dmg = 6 damage for 3 mana (can be more with Doomhammer...),

    2. Overdraft - as a finisher, can deal for example 7 damage for 1 mana,

    3. Park Panther - 4 dmg (to minions) + 3 dmg = 7 damage for 4 mana.

On HSReplays Aggro DH sits at around 50% winrate and has bad matchups against other aggro decks, so people choose something more viable in current meta.

And the decks you mentioned, are not popular enough (I think) to include "Ignore Taunt" effect.

just said libram paladin doesn't exist, let alone priest with that elemental card, lol.

Against taunt druid demon hunter wants to win the board, not ignore it all and push 3 face damage.
