Prismatic Parlance - Card Design Competition Discussion Thread

Submitted 10 months, 1 week ago by

Competition Theme: Prismatic Parlance

This week, we're giving the term "colorful language" a new meaning.

  • You must make a class card with a keyword that the class doesn't normally use. For the purposes of establishing defined boundaries, as long as the class has less than 5 collectible cards that utilize that keyword, it will count.
    • Keywords that are exclusive to certain expansions or years (like Inspire or Echo) will not count as uncommon keywords for the class regardless of how few cards in that class use it.
    • Using class-exclusive keywords (like Combo or Outcast) on cards in other classes will also not count.

This week, Wailor wants the classes to step a little bit outside of their keyword comfort zone.

As always, we can be reached through Discord or here on the site via PM if you have any issues to report.

Here are the phases of this card design competition

Just a heads-up. Imgur is supposed to be purging uploads without an account today.

It seems to be fine at the time of writing this post, but just to be safe, I would recommend that from this point on, you either:

    • Create an Imgur account if you don't already have one.
    • Find another site to host your images on.

Charge is only used once in the Paladin, and Spell Damage is not on any Warlock cards:

    1. The Myrmidon has seemingly lost his faith, and gains strength when others waver (i.e: their Divine Shields breaking). A solid handbuff target that can grow on its own (DS minions being good handbuff targets as well).
    2. The Siren lures minions to their doom and gains magical power from their death. Don't know what you'd use her with right now; probably some OTK strategy with cards from her expansion.

Not sure on the cost for either of them.

    • Cranky Hibernator would be the first card to use Freeze in Druid and is probably my favorite. It's a defensive card that can be used against both wide and tall boards, depending on the option you choose.
    • Frenzied Doomguard is a reimagination of the classic Doomguard, using Windfury in Warlock for the first time. He is better suited for removal, but can also be dropped on an empty board without discarding anything immediately, as he can rack a lot of damage if not removed.
    • Finally, Soulstealing Familiar has Rush, only used once in Priest. It's basically a Holy Water on a stick, but I think it works better than that card, which was pretty weak.

    Gorehowl already can kill Cairne.

Gorehowl starts with 7 Attack and Cairne has 5 Health.

I've been waiting for an excuse to use spell handbuffing in a comp again ever since it finally became legal in MotLK. Leech Glyph provides Mage with a bit of healing, which might not fit its identity, but that's why the healing is not very high, even compared to Neutral cards. However, the Lifesteal should become more valuable in a deck with spell damage cards. And since it specifies damaging spells, the card pool will most likely be favorable.

    Edit:

Leech Glyph was obviously a bit expensive, but I didn't want to make it a 1-Cost to avoid it being a direct powercreep on Magic Trick. For some reason I didn't think of it yesterday, but of course I should've just made it a battlecry. So here's the new and improved version:

My second idea is Ice Sculpting. Warrior has Frost spells now, but so far the only one that actually Freezes is Snowed In. Ice Sculpting is a defensive tool that can be used to freeze a large minion and summon a copy for yourself for later or it can be played together with a buffed up Taunt minion to put a big wall on your board.

While I'm in the middle of internally debating if I should get an Imgur account (and then if I do, actually doing it), here's a card.

Spell Damage Hunter works perfectly for this since it's an established archetype and it still has few enough cards to fit within the requirements.

"spell with Spell Damage" is supposed to be a shorthand for "spell that has benefitted from Spell Damage" since there's not enough text space to write all of that down. I hope that's clear enough.

Unrepentant Myrmidon is a suprise kill that can be a bit unfun to go against, so I'm not too fond on it.

Although the same could be said about Seraphina, I find her much more interesting. Being a one-off, not depending on being on hand, needing spells to deal the final blow… All these things make the card work much better, IMO.

Hey, welcome to the design corner!

I like that you decided to showcase an important character for the WoW lore, but her effect doesn't feel appropriate for Warrior. I'd probably redesign the card as a Shaman legendary (she's a Shaman, after all) with the text "Your weapon has Windfury and Poisonous". Another option would be to make it a Rogue card (which fits the effect a bit better), but you'd probably need to change the character in that case.

Twilight Enchantress is my favorite of your cards, as her power level is more appropriate than Leech Glyph.

Ice Sculpting isn't bad, but it doesn't look like a Warrior card.

Pretty solid card, but not overly exciting. Not much to add, as it seems quite balanced.

My ideas. Also to Demon - I absolutely recommend having an account on Imgur.

"Truth is in the shadows, waiting to be revealed by the light. But light only disperses the shadow." - Me

"If other people shared traits of those considered naive, the world would've become a better place." - Also me

Charge isn't too exciting. Most of the time it's either an annoying finisher or a boring minion. Seraphina the Siren is more exciting and seems somewhat balanced by the lack of direct face damage on Warlock spells. I was worried her effect scales too quickly. Warlock does have a lot of cards that summon imps, destroy your own minions for bonus effects or deal aoe damage. However, I mostly see her being powerful (face damage wise) in combination with Felfire in the Hole!, Mordresh style, which relies on your deck having exclusively Fel spells, so you're probably good.

I appreciate the throwback that is Frenzied Doomguard, but discard just never really seems worth it. Soulstealing Familiar fits the prompt well. It really feels like a Priest card despite using Rush. I also like it since I'm a big Thief archetype enthousiast, but Cranky Hibernator has a more interesting effect and feels original, so that one's probably my favorite too.

I'll admit I don't know any WoW lore, but the effects seem a bit disconnected to me. Giving your weapon Poisonous is an interesting effect that fits Warrior's aggressiveness well, encouraging you to smash your face into big minions and profiting off it, but I don't see why the minion also has Windfury. It gives me the impression that you probably added it because you wanted to make a card that has two keywords that fit the prompt.

Also, when you submit, I advice you to write a short explanation in the card description as to how the effect fits in with the lore.

The requirement is quite exciting. I definitely think most players would interpret this correctly, but it's still somewhat of a gray area. I personally prefer something along the lines of "a spell improved by Spell Damage" following the phrasing of cards like Unexpected Results.

    Neoguli
Eldritch Atrocity doesn't really stand out that much. Cryotic Succubus is quite interesting, except it seems (correct me if I'm wrong) that so far it only synergizes with Going Down Swinging. An effect that is literally useless unless combined with one specific card is not something I approve of. Also, a hero is generally referred to as "it" instead of "them" (like Truesilver Champion).

You have about 6 hours left to submit! I only just submitted a card, myself: been busy a lot lately...or distracted with Tears of the Kingdom lol.
