The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom Is a New Zelda Game Where You Play as the Princess Herself (youtube.com)

A new 2D Legend of Zelda game is coming out, and we finally get to play as the titular princess. You'll be able to create echoes of various objects and even enemies. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom releases September 26th, along with a special Nintendo Switch Lite version.

OMG I LOVE IT. It has the aesthetic of the Link's Awakening remake, too!

Alright so this might be one of my favourite things ever.

The Link's Awakening look makes the game a 10/10 already, though I really hope they don't drop frames like crazy. For such a simple looking game, it was mindblowing that they were having difficulty running it on the Switch; Clearly it was poorly optimized.

But damn. The puzzles in this game are going to be good with all the different objects allowing you to solve them all in different ways. Everyone's brains work differently and it will be very interesting to see how people solve them in their own way. It has huge social potential, kinda like how Breath of the Wild had shrines solved in very unique ways as people found ways to break the game.

Getting to play as Zelda though? The Legend of Link! This makes it Nintendo's second title this year that will have brought a female protagonist who would otherwise be a background character in the series and I love it. I can't even recall how many times you've seen people ask for a Zelda game where you play as Zelda or in the case of Peach from the Mario series, how often folks wanted more with her.

The special Switch version is very cool too, its just a shame that its a Switch Lite. I don't really understand the Switch Lite. Sure, it's a bit smaller which makes portability better, but the complete lack of being able to dock it is nonsense and with the poor durability of Joycons, having your Joycons built right into the system makes it a bad choice for long-term playability. Also, Nintendo would be the ones to drop a new fancy skin for a console when the "Super Switch" is right around the corner. It's definitely an item the collector's will buy though so it's a easy way to get rid of extra stock of the lite that isn't selling. Anyway, I didn't mean to make this all about the Switch Lite, more Zelda games is awesome!

Funnily enough, this isn't the first time either princess is playable in a console game. Zelda was playable in Zelda: Wand of Gamelon and Zelda's Adventure for the CD-i (both of which received less than favourable reviews), while Peach was the main character in Super Princess Peach on the DS and, uhm... Princess Toadstool's Castle Run, a McDonald's watch toy form 1990.

Zelda is also playable in Candance of Hyrule, while Peach was a playable character in a bunch of 2D Mario games, starting with the English version of Mario 2.

All that to say, it's great to have both of them playable in high-budget games on the main console, even if the gameplay is quite different from the mainline games. Now give me a game where you can play as both of them and Samus, I don't care how contrived it is!

Oh wow, Super Princess Peach, that was almost 20 years ago! The DS had so many titles, it's really no surprise it was forgotten by me (and I suspect many others). I was still rocking a Game Boy Advance when the DS was prime time haha.

The CD-i games don't really count imo. They were simply IP licensed by Nintendo (what a mistake) and if I recall correctly, Nintendo doesn't consider them to be as official games either. That's solid trivia though and technically from a "its a video game" so definition here matters. Similarly, Cadence of Hyrule, which was an absolutely incredible game and oh I so want to play it again at some point, it doesn't fit because it's third party.

Though Echoes of Wisdom might also be third party as well to a degree. Grezzo made the Link's Awakening remake and it's quite possible they are responsible for this title too. Even with Nintendo overlords oversight, I'd be picking some weird battles if I didn't give it the third party designation as well. Man, Zelda as a series is messed up and certainly begs the question of what even counts as a Zelda game if you want to define it. The Capcom titles jam hard though.

A trifecta game with Zelda, Samus, and Princess Peach though, you're onto something! Super Smash Bros has entered the chat.
