Cataclysm Card Reveals - Day 11 [Finished]

Published 6 days, 1 hour ago by (Updated 5 days, 22 hours ago)

The shadows have come out to play, as today is the day of Priest and Warlock. Two classes that feel like opposites, yet also feel the same. It's a very odd relationship they have.

Colossals are back! When you summon a Colossal minion, it'll split up into multiple different appendages that have their own effects, and created one GIANT threat on the board.

Herald and Shatter are also two new keywords in Cataclysm. Herald cards build up the strength of your Colossal, by summoning a Soldier with the same ability as the appendages. Shatter cards split into two cards when they're added to your hand, going to the left and right-most spots in your hand, and merge back into one card when they're adjacent in your hand.

We've got all of the information about the set right here, and don't forget that as the first set of the year, there will also be a new Core set. You can found out about the new Core set right here, and there's also the ongoing Rally the Dragonflights event that you can sign up for to give every player some new cards.

We've got a collection of cards below for today.

  • Am I misunderstanding Herald, or does Cho'Gall summon two 12/12s and eat two minions out of the opponent's deck?

    • I believe Herald upgrades cap at 4, meaning that when fully upgraded, Cho'Gall will summon two 8/8s that destroy minions in the opponent's deck.

      • I thought Herald doubled then doubled again. Is it a flat bonus?

        • It does double, then double again.

          1/1 > 2/2 > 4/4... I guess that's it. Don't know what I was thinking when I made that 8/8 comment.

  • Def going to give Vyra a shot, should at least be fun trying to make something work with it.

  • Add one more legendary that was introduced later;

Vyranoth - Its the sort of card thats funny to look at but is neither funny to build around nor I suspect very much funny playing it.

Chief among the deluge of problems on the viability of the card includes the fact that you need to actually play this, and this card is 6 mana, making it already more or less unlikely to impact the game in terms of tempo.

The other problem is actually fitting that many minions in your deck such that it is exactly 100 in cost, which is no mean feat considering that most good cards tend to be cheap. A quick lookup on two meta decks, both hagatha shaman and cliff dive dhunter are both around the realms of 40-50 in total minion cost. So by default the deck is either heavy with late game minions, or extremely densely packed with minions.

Maybe its way too early to say, because team5 can easily print a 30-50 cost minion at some point that will make up for the conditions, but as it stands right now this card is shit, created solely to please markmckz, who will no doubt make an OTK deck out of it.

  • Cho'Gall, Mastermind - Probably the best looking colossal so far, aesthetically. As for the card itself, I personally think its shit, and because of how his soldier's work, its not even 100% include into a deathwing deck. Imagine paying 9 mana to not do anything on board, even if we want to imagine that the twin arms as a 7/7 while deleting two minions from the opposing deck, we're still talking about putting no taunt or rush minions on turn 9 in a game where doing such things would usually result in you being dead.

The soldiers themselves devour your own minions which means possible deathrattle synergies, but it also means youre limited as to what deck you put cho'gall in. Not to mention that if it devours nothing, then it also gains nothing, being but a 1/1 on board.

Cursed Chains - Its supposed to be a psuedo removal card that removes a minion for a turn, but it has more utility than that. Deny your opponent a minion in their graveyard, take over taunts and delay a turn of attacks, and for two mana its hard for this card to not see any play.

Eldritch Tentacles - Probably one of the best AoE options warlock would have, though

Purifying Breath - With the new location this is just deal 5 damage to a minion and your opponent's face.

Cleansing Cleric - Depending on certain factors, chiefly control priest not being shit, this card might actually end up being one of the most hated card in this set, and unlike blackhorn, probably have no friends that actually likes it.

Because what this card does is just ensure that outside of an OTK or an overwhelming board, you will never ever be able to beat a control priest, and even if they replace their hp with imbue, every lifesteal minion turns into some sort of pseudo zilliax.

So priest looks marginally better than I thought with each reveal. Thats a good sign. The shatter cards are looking increasingly worse with each reveal, and Im somewhat optimistic for non-deathwing decks to actually be more viable.
