Tickling that pity timer

Submitted 5 years, 3 months ago by

As far as I know there is no sufficient data for the golden legendary pity timer (PT).

I actually got to 39x packs last expansion in between golden legendaries, so the much cited '400 packs PT' seems to hold, but I'm now (unwillingly) on my quest to test the PT:

349 Uldum packs opened, no golden legendary (got all commons and rares, most epics and would be missing like 5-6 legs hadn't I crafted 3)

IF I DO HIT like 380, I'll post again, but until then: What was the longest opening streak without a golden leg for you?

I started playing before WotOG and didn't get a golden legendary until Ungoro. I didn't know there was a golden legendary pity timer, I thought goldens were just luck. Just basic legendary pity timer is 40 packs.

Let me do some rough math:

The first and only Golden Legendary I've ever gotten from a pack was Madame Lazul in RoS on one of the first packs I opened that expansion. I started playing right after K&C launched, and did the 50-pack preorders for WW (which was actually 70 packs), BP, & RR. So that's 170 there, plus let's say on average I opened 6 packs a week from normal gold/tavern brawls, so that would be 6x65 weeks = 390. Add to that the idk 40 or so free packs Blizz had given out in that timespan and I would say there were probably around 600 packs opened between when I started playing and getting Lazul. So unless it counts the free golden legendaries I got from the preorders, I would say that I was WAY outside of this supposed pity timer.

Pity timers are (at least for non-goldens) confirmed to be set-specific. So you could for example open 39 packs of all available expansions without getting any legendary and that's still within some confidence interval.

I (and most others) am conviced this also applies to golden cards, where it is already established to a sufficient degree that the pity timers are:

    • Golden Common: 26,

    • Golden Rare: 30,

    • Golden Epic: 158

    • (yeah there is also a number for Golden Legs...)

    Source: Reddit

HOWEVER as the pity timer for golden legs is supposedly 400 packs at least, the data set is VERY small. (Most people don't open 400 packs of one set and if they do, they usually don't stretch the distance of two golden legs that far).

That's why me opening 39x packs last expansion was quite an outlier and pretty nice data-wise

Note that the non-golden legendary pity timer is a separate timer per pack type, so assuming the golden pity timer works in the same way, you'd only trigger it by getting hundreds of packs from the same type. The OP mentions only Uldum packs, so they should hit the pity timer soonish if 400 is indeed the limit.

Personally I typically get 100 to 120 packs per expansion. I have a golden legendary from some expansions but not from all, so any pity timer limit would be above 100 at least.

If the pity timer is somewhat > 350 packs why would someone ever want to trigger it? Seems like a huge waste of money or gold for to small a reward.

Pack #355 gave me golden King Phaoris, so let's hope this was the last time I had to wait that long...

Most people wouldn’t be grinding it out for golden legendaries (hell, most people probably haven’t even considered a pity timer for golden legendaries might even exist). I’d imagine it really only exists for whales, and for classic packs (since that’s the only one most people could reasonably hit)

Who needs consistency when you could have fun?

Wow that seems unlucky. What is the average for golden legendarys? I pretty consistantly get one per expansion in about 150-200 packs. Very vague number because i have no clue how many arenas i play within once expansion cycle.

Got golden Phaoris aswell btw, not the worst golden card imo. I like shiny big board!

Well i would say it is realy more luck based than on actual numbers because i bought 30 packs a few days ago and got  legendarys ( 2 of them in gold)
