Three notable Blizzard employees left the company back in May of 2019, two of which had large roles in the development of Hearthstone as we know it. This was not previously public knowledge until Kotaku broke the news and received a statement from Blizzard.
Eric Dodds, Jason Chayes, and Dustin "Rock" Browder were all on Blizzard's cancelled Starcraft FPS project, Ares, as reported by Kotaku. The three left as those resources were redirected to other projects within the company.
- Eric Dodds - Game Director of Hearthstone before Ben Brode. Concepted Hearthstone with Ben
- Jason Chayes - Production Director of Hearthstone.
- Dustin Browder - Lead Designer & Game Director of Starcraft 2, Game Director of Heroes of the Storm.
Quote From Blizzard Yes, Eric, Dustin, and Jason made the decision to move on from Blizzard a few months ago. They have been and always will be considered members of the Blizzard family, and we’ve loved working with them over the years. We wish them the best for the future. That said, we want to make sure it’s clear that development of Blizzard games has always been a collaborative effort between many talented, longstanding teammates here continuing that good work.
Eric Dodds Leaves Blizzard
Eric Dodds was one of the founding members of the Hearthstone team. Early on in development, the entire team on Hearthstone was reassigned to work on StarCraft 2 with the exception of Eric and Ben Brode. The two went on to rapidly prototype the game together and eventually created an Adobe Flash version of the game [1]. When the team members returned, they used the Flash game to create the new one. Eric was Hearthstone's game director until he left the team to work on Ares in 2016, which is when Ben Brode was promoted to the title.
Here is a bio for Eric given out to the press in 2015.
Quote From Blizzard Press As Blizzard Entertainment's lead designer for Hearthstone™: Heroes of Warcraft™, Eric Dodds oversees all aspects of gameplay, including card design, gameplay balance, game modes, and the user interface.
Dodds joined Blizzard Entertainment in 1997, and during his lengthy tenure with the company has served in key roles on numerous games. His first role was working on StarCraft® and Diablo® in quality assurance. Dodds then went on to serve as a level designer on StarCraft: Brood War® and Warcraft® II: Battle.net® Edition as well as on the strike team for Diablo II and the Lord of Destruction® expansion. He then joined the newly formed World of Warcraft® team and spent eight years serving as a systems designer. More recently he worked on the design of Diablo III before joining the Hearthstone team.
Dodds is a board gaming enthusiast who is always up for a game of Galaxy Trucker or Liar’s Dice.
Jason Chayes Leaves Blizzard
Jason Chayes was hired on at Blizzard in 2008 to work on Hearthstone as production director. Here is a bio for Jason given out to the press in 2015.
Quote From Blizzard Press As Blizzard Entertainment's production director for Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, Jason Chayes is responsible for the management of the development team, including execution strategy, staffing, process development, and ordering pizza when the team is hungry. In addition to providing support for the team, Chayes is also responsible for coordinating with other groups at Blizzard to ensure the delivery of the cross-team features necessary to support the release of new Hearthstone content.
Chayes joined Blizzard Entertainment in 2008, and worked as a 3D artist in a prior life for The Walt Disney Company and Electronic Arts. Since joining Blizzard, Jason has also acted as lead producer for the Battle.net team and helped out with the development of key features for StarCraft II and Diablo III.
Dustin Browder Leaves Blizzard
Although Dustin Browder doesn't have connections to the Hearthstone team, he was the lead designer on StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty before moving on up to game director for Heart of the Swarm. After his time on the StarCraft team, Dustin moved to Blizzard's arena brawler, Heroes of the Storm, which made use of the StarCraft engine and he took on the title of game director once more. In 2016, he left the Heroes team to work on Ares.

why 19 is so hard But i love bad ice cream 3 on hudgames
Always wondered what happened to Mr. Dodds after he stepped down as Game Director. I remember Mr. Chayes from the Frozen Throne announcement trailer. He was the one opposite Mr. Brode, slowly morphing into an undead over the video.
is it possible they just got tired of working at the same place?
"The roof the roof the roof is on fire..."
I blame Flamewakers.
They obviously kept this hushed up as to not draw attention to the fact there may be an internal issue at hand.
Also mighty suspicious this was announced the week of Blizzcon.
The announcement the week before blizzcon is a matter of necessity, at least for Dustin Browder, he did several panels/interviews/stuff the past years and his absence would have been immediately noticed and caused questions.
Guys, the reason this is reported now is because even though this happened in May, this is first time we've had any hearing about it. If you read the Kotaku article, you'd see that it was published two days ago.
Blizzard: ‘everything is fine’
I'm a little confused... if this happened in May, why is the article being written now? Did something change or some new development occur?
I'm not being snarky or anything (I didn't realize they left at all, which is maybe the point of the post), I am just trying to understand...
The news didn't drop until yesterday afternoon. None of the three spoke publicly about it.
Ah, that makes sense. I'm not seeing coverup here btw, just some people not making a big deal over leaving. I also agree that it probably garnered attention now due to Blizzard's current activity in the news. Thx for the clarification Flux!
Maybe it just came out now that they left??? I didn't even notice the date, I just went straight to the section talking about who these guys are.
This is what happened. I believe that the cancelled Ares project had been reported on before, but Eric, Jason and Dustin leaving wasn't known. Eric and Jason haven't been involved in Hearthstone for a while, but given they were incredibly influential on its development, it felt appropriate to note them leaving the company.
Exactly my thoughts
exactly, like the rest of the world, no one new about this until now
quite impressive tbf keeping an information like that secret for so long
It's not really secret. I think it was more that people didn't notice/care. Ares was cancelled, and that was public. But no one followed up on who left after the project was cancelled.
This is more "people weren't paying attention" than it was "MEGA TINFOIL COVERUP."
That said, not sure why people noticed now.
Possibly just a reporter looking into what Blizzard has been up to, given their rather controversial nature in the news recently and Blizzcon right around the corner.
A big cancelled project is the sort of thing you'd look into if you were looking for something you can get a story out of, and it makes sense you'd stumble across this when doing so.
