Will DH be a 1 set class?

Submitted 4 years, 7 months ago by

Just wondering, will DH be a one set class?

Since it will be introduced in the next xpac, will it only have 1 set?

Whereas all the other 9 class will have 4 (3 from year of the dragon, 1 from new xpac).

Or will blizzard retroactively print new cards for the year of the dragon for the DH class?

And if so, do we have to buy the old packs again?

DH seems to get more cards from Outland than the other classes, probably as compensation. I don't think cards will be added to the old sets, that's just unfair if you're done buying those. Maybe we'll get a class bundle like the Mage bundle recently?

Makes sense. Maybe that's why they were dry running the class specific pack.

For Blizzard or the players? I consider it as a "test balloon" to check out the interest in class bundles. If we get a Demon Hunter bundle players might buy it even if it's bad value like the mage one.

I'm thinking the class may only get  cards for 2 years worth of sets until it goes to wild, then maybe another class might appear.

I could be wrong I guess we'll see

Think the class might get more cards than other classes to catch up this year only or will get more "neutral class cards"(think Hench-Clan Thug for rogue) than other classes.

I think they will support the class going forward.. HS is 6 years game it's time for a new class..

I think the reason why we didn't see any Classic DH cards is because...they don't exist. My guess is that DH is not a true 10th class but a yearly class that will rotate alongside the Year of the Phoenix.

To create a new class only for one standard rotation seems like a lot of wasted effort. It would also disappear entirely in Wild due to the lack of cards. No, I presume Illidan is here to stay unless they tell us otherwise. But yeah, I'm considering the missing Classic cards as well. My guess is that either they will reveal it later, some of them might come as freebies, or DH cards will be limited to Basic + expansions.

TBH, I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around adding a class. I've been playing since almost the very start, and I'm so USED to how things are. First off, they'll have to rearrange the nice 3x3 grid for selecting classes/decks (I know, not a big deal really). But more importantly, how does a brand new class catch up to all the class identity (and card library) of the other 9? Someone posted somewhere the idea that DH would suffer in wild due to lack of cards, but what about in standard? DH will be way behind the other classes there too unless Blizzard prints a ton of extra cards. And whatever cards become DH's "basic" set will have to be unlockable through gameplay or for free, like the other classes.

I'm excited for things to get shaken up, but also a bit nervous. Looking forward to answers today!

This is new territory and I'm sure blizzard wont get everything right off the bat. We'll know a lot more soon enough (starting with if this is even real or not). While unfortunate, blizzard will have a lot of catching up to do for the class and DH archetypes will be limited for some time. We can only hope they do the best they can and we provide the valuable feedback they might have missed during testing.

The other 9 classes aren't going anywhere (and one is even getting a make over allegedly). While the class might be stuck with one or two decks for some months, we wont.

I'm not sure how I feel about the class bundles. I like your idea that it could be used as a gauge for interest, however I feel it is too late in the season to get an accurate depiction.

Personally, I didn't buy the mage bundle because I already had all of the mage cards, and I didn't see the monetary investment worthwhile for what could have been only a couple hundred dust. I have bought the other bigger bundles that felt more worth the cost in the past, but a class-only bundle seems like a bad idea.

I could see them giving us the 30ish cards for a DH base deck, and then using a 1-time story mode to unlock additional cards for the DH, then having DH cards available in the packs with the other 9 classes (usually it is 11 unique cards per class I think). So this expansion I wouldn't be surprised to see well over the 155 that we saw last expansion (I think it was 155) just to balance out the new class with the previous 9.

I agree, unless they do some interesting combinations, Demon Hunter is going to be way behind the pack in wild.

One of the few ways I can see them balancing this out, is to literally change some of the Hunter and Warlock cards to be similar to the Karazhan expansion where they could be used in Hunter and Demon Hunter, or Warlock and Demon Hunter. This would give them more viability in wild. Otherwise, they would need to create at least 100 additional cards just to throw into wild for the Demon Hunter, on top of the standard rotation of cards, plus the base deck, plus the 100+ expansion cards. That is a lot for Blizzard to try to do just to add one more class.

I am a little surprised, however, that they didn't decide to go full-force into it and make Monk and Death Knight full-fledged classes as well.

And... What if the class itself is behind paywall? Jk (but not so much).

The idea of adding more class cards makes sense anyway. Although, it'd quite a lot of cards.

As for Wild, the mode already has whole classes that are barely viable, so I guess a full-Standard DH in Wild is ok with the devs.

DH as a class doesn't even support Odd/Even so far, so...

Not necessarily, the amount of cards isn't a power level gauge, the class can have an impactful enough core set that it + some wild neutrals will be very solid and viable.. for example Sharkfin Fan works very well with the class but it will be in wild since it rotates now.. and the other 9 classes have a lot of trash, powercrept or outdated cards.. in the end you need 30 cards to build a deck it doesn't matter if the 30 cards are from older expansions or newer..

So I was wrong. I am still worried about DH's long-term prospects in terms of flavor. Most other classes have a lot going on for them flavor-wise. For instance when you think Rogue you can think of pirates, ninjas, spies, etc. when you think Warrior you can think big tank or bloodthirsty brute, etc... that's because the base classes evokes general D&D/fantasy archetypes. But DH? Too specific to WoW for that. In fact a lot of DH cards we've seen look a lot like each other.

DH's flavor might get refined over the years like the flavor of other classes was, but DH doesn't have much design space left...
