You should be able to message a friend when you're battling him when you've chosen a deck but they haven't yet.
For whatever reason, my friends can take a long time before deciding on a deck when we're playing together. However I can't message him to "pick a deck" I have to cancel my deck, message him, then pick it again. I don't understand why I can't just message him when I've selected my deck. Sorry if this has been brought up before.

The way the text system is currently set up this is unfortunately not super trivial to add. It's on our wish list though! This is totally not an ideal option but a work around for now is to click on the link through Battle.net app. Of course if you are on mobile device this doesn't help.
