Elden Ring Day 2: The Deaths Begin I went from a first play session of 0 deaths to a second play session of 15-20. Ended up picking Astrologer, who I think seems very good even if the combat is a little boring. Pew --> Pew --> Roll --> Pew!

The 'gamey' part of things isn't really fun yet. The menus are all confusing, caster combat is pretty repetitive, and I'm completely unsure of how to progress my character even though I've done some internet sleuthing.

And given that statement, I'd still consider this one of the coolest single-player games I've ever played. The world is massive, awesome, and constantly intriguing me with fun surprises. I'm in awe of how content dense everything is.

As a designer, making one of these games seems like a dream. There is so much thoughtful and clever world design but very little of the things that normally come along with that. Things like complex UI systems, branching narrative, hundreds of lines of VO.

Other open world games have a hard time being this content dense because if they want to do a cool gameplay thing it means (at least) writing a compelling story and getting hundreds of VO lines recorded. I'd guess with Elden they were able to iterate a ton relatively cheaply.

As for my progress, I found the first boss before I died for the first time and was utterly decimated. I tried again, same thing. Told myself this is probably normal and went off to explore the world.

I ran into a familiar lady who took me to a gothic knights of the round table lookin' ass place. I talked to many people there who tell me a bunch of weird useless things, but they are creepy and weird and I like them a lot.

Spend 45 minutes trying to get out. Have to use the internet to find out how. Oh... you just.... open a menu and fast travel out because there actually IS NO EXIT HERE? Ok, time to explore more of the map.

Found a cave to the east, spent 2 hours clearing it. Hard to explain this feeling of discovery. Incredible. It's like the first time you play an MMO. Rare to get that discovery feeling in any game anymore. How can we capture this more often in the games we make?

Killed the boss at the end of cave 1. Found another cave, another 2 hours clearing (it's probably 2AM now). Found the end, talked to a large british-sounding .... pot? He was very nice, on his way to a party or something he said. A very WTF moment, but I'm game.

Attempted the boss at the end of this cave. Holy shit not even close, not even worth a second attempt. I try again anyway, goes even worse. I put a marker on the map and decide to come back another day.

Some lady gives me spirit wolves to summon? Ok. I go back to the first boss area because I'm significantly higher level and now I summon doggies. Die twice, then kill him. Rejoice!

At this point I'm still in the same gear I started the game in, maybe I should fix that.... I upgraded the starter sword even though internet said not to. Oh well.

End of day 2 and I've killed one cave boss who gave me a big hammer I can't use. Then killed one 'story' boss, at least it seems like a story boss. I am feeling very successful and can't wait to continue. ELDEN RING BABYYY
