It’s painfully ironic that multiple people I know have had their accounts permanently banned for making jokes pretending to be Elon Musk in the same week he announced he’s buying Twitter in the name of “free speech” https://t.co/hPOUK3PHiK

@bmkibler I mean nothing has changed yet, right? Even if Elon does buy Twitter and does force change on their moderation policies... that hasn't happened yet. All of this has happened under the old (less free in Elon's eyes) moderation policies.

@bmkibler (Personally, I suspect it's all for show, nothing will change, moderation is just an infinitely debatable topic where there are counterexamples to every argument, because it's so inconsistently applied anyway.)

@Celestalon @bmkibler Kibler isn't wrong though. It's just odd that it happens to be one of the few policies that is actually being enforced.

@BitBeaker @bmkibler Is it though? Or are we just noticing it because it's topical and people we care about? Some of the bans are even obviously counter to the policies (ie, a clearly-labeled parody account being banned). It's just inconsistent, so anyone can find examples supporting any argument.

@BitBeaker @Celestalon @bmkibler I'm 100% sure that a bunch of musk stans are reporting anybody doing it.

@jcandance @BitBeaker @bmkibler Yeah, I suspect that's what it ultimately comes down to: things that get reported more are more likely to get actioned.

@Celestalon I know nothing has changed. I’m just pointing out that it’s ironic and amusing. The really silly thing is the people claiming that they were suddenly unbanned/un”silenced” when the deal was announced, because they’re obviously just telling on themselves.

@bmkibler Oh yeah, saw a few of those, heh.
