@Celestalon Something I’ve wondered for awhile, how are achievements decided upon? Is that mainly the features team or does it depend on the mode and the team involved with it? P.S. the new mercs achievements were really cool (especially the Elise one) and I hope we see more of them!

@ZombiesGoNomNom Features team is in charge of maintaining the Achievement *system* (ie, what is the UI for it), but the *content* within it (ie, the individual achievement designs) belong to the designers on the team that makes that content (cardsets, battlegrounds, etc.).

@Celestalon What’s your favourite kind of hat?

@moonhippo Hmmm... Not really a fan of hats, TBH. They hide my beautiful hair. Hoods probably closest.

@Celestalon How many people work in the features team, and what are their roles? (engineer, designer, idk I'm totally uneducated on the topic 😅)
        • Chadd Nervigg

Posted 3 years, 5 months ago (Source)
@HS_Copa Mobility within the HS team and within Blizz is something we value highly, so it does vary a bit, but roughly a dozen or so are dedicated to Features. We're heaviest on engineers, and then also have UI/UX developers, systems designers, producers, and QA. Very cross-disciplinary.

@Celestalon Are there any kind of roles for a SDET at Blizzard?
        • Chadd Nervigg

Posted 3 years, 5 months ago (Source)
@Panoramic_Panda Yes! No current opening for that role on Features, but elsewhere at Blizzard there are some. Examples: https://t.co/dnzE3nNZyi https://t.co/s8TfYiarhT

@Celestalon C#! I assume backend APIs, with C++ being the game integration?
        • Chadd Nervigg

Posted 3 years, 5 months ago (Source)
@nzcoward Most of the client stuff that Features team is working on is heavy on C#. The C++ is more on the server side.

@Celestalon Would you happen to have a more junior/entry level of the same kind of role as well? Asking for a friend

@TenOldMen We do sometimes, but no open associate slot right now. Keep an eye out for that though!

@Celestalon random question any cool things with regards to achievements in development (even if you cant share what it is)

Posted 3 years, 5 months ago (Source)
@EliteLeafHater Systems-wise, we have a few ideas for cool improvements for the Achievement System, but nothing super major or high priority at this point. The system's working pretty well overall, I'd say. Many cool new individual achievements coming though!

Oh, other point that's probably relevant to many potential applicants: This can be a REMOTE position if preferred! Full-time in person, hybrid, or remote, are all welcome. International adds a bit of complication to the hiring process, but probably workable too!

I believe there's some restriction on it being a country that we're licensed to operate in, or something like that? But that's pretty widespread. We do work US timezone hours though. The Features team has people from all across the US and Canada. Less than half of us are local.

@Celestalon Are you required to have an in-ground pool in your home to work at Blizzard or is it just a coincidence that both Nick and Alkali have pools?

@adam_noodelman Nick has a pool too? Why hasn't he invited me over?! :'(

@adam_noodelman @Celestalon This is my parents’ place! I live in a small condo. My building does have a pool, though, so we can still make something work… if you’ll willing to drive all the way out lol

@Celestalon Not exactly a question related to programming, but how does the team go about commissioning card art? Do you commission on a case by case basis or are some artists fully hired? I’ve been curious how the art process is handled.
      • Chadd Nervigg

Posted 3 years, 5 months ago (Source)
@Nincity_ Card designers will design the card's mechanics and flavor, including an "art description", 1-2 sentences that describe what the art we'd like is. We also supply reference for similar/related characters.
        • Chadd Nervigg

Posted 3 years, 5 months ago (Source)
@Nincity_ Then our art outsourcing team will match art descriptions up with artists whose style would fit each piece. We have a wide variety of awesome artists that we work with, from all over the world, most of which are independent.
          • Chadd Nervigg

Posted 3 years, 5 months ago (Source)
@Nincity_ These are sent out in waves, usually 2 waves per expansion. As sketches, color studies, drafts, and finals start coming back, the art managers and designers are there to give feedback, and push the art in the right direction.
