I watch a LOT of Twitch. Love to hop into a wide variety of streams. Main difference between a stream I'll poke in, say hi, watch for 10min and leave... and one that I'll linger in for hours and hours? Music.

I'm not gunna call it bad music, because musical taste is entirely subjective. Sooo many streamers play niche-appeal music. The more niche your music is, the more potential long-term viewers you must be driving away.

It's your stream, you can listen to what you want. Of course. But if growing your audience is a goal of yours, please strongly consider optimizing your music for your target audience (which probably means broadly-appealing music).

@RidiculousHat Mumblerap is a term for Rap that you can't usually understand the words to. Most rap falls in this category.

@RidiculousHat Highlight of rap that does not fall in the mumblerap category: NF. (And yes, I got your joke, but have chosen to ignore it.)

@Celestalon Is there a way to play broadly-appealing music to your audience, while you can listen to your own favorite ones, just curious?
          • Chadd Nervigg

Posted 3 years, 3 months ago (Source)
@Cloudious75 Yes, I'm 90% sure this is possible, though I don't know the details. Probably requires having one audio app sending audio to one audio device (your headset), and another app sending to a different device, but your streaming software only include the second one?

@Celestalon Why would you ever play music on stream? I honestly think it’s lose lose (plus rights headaches)

@themattlondon Sets the vibe of your stream pretty well. Many people will tune in for your music (even though they could just listen to their own). Easier for mobile listeners too.

@Celestalon Vibe I get. Not sure if it outweighs the headache of split audio channels and so on. Do people really tune in to non dedicated music channels for music?

@themattlondon @Celestalon Last month I did a Metal Night stream, I played HS and enabled song requests and it attracted a lot of new viewers who came only for the music but came back to the regular streams too. So I guess in this specific case it did work for me and I'm gonna try to do that once a month.

@BabyBearHS @themattlondon Yeah, I think making a temporary event of it like that is cool (I tuned in for that!).

@themattlondon @Celestalon There are plenty of stream-safe music sources, and a lot of folks split the audio so the music doesn’t go to the VOD (whether or not they’re at risk of violating DMCA)

@WickedGood @Celestalon But to Purple’s point, music is an unnecessary addon that chases audience away. And then the hassle of finding steam safe music or split audio on top of that.

@Celestalon What type of music do you think is good for a stream?
          • Chadd Nervigg

Posted 3 years, 3 months ago (Source)
@MartianBuu Anything mass market appealing (or at least not *un*appealing). Pop music, Lo-fi beats, chill EDM, the sort of music you could hear in a trendy store.

@Celestalon Well, me, too...in a way. The absence of music will cause me to stay longer. I find the music distracting.

@KittyKoshkaboo There are numerous streams that I'd watch more if they played no music instead of what they do play.

@lyynnnHS @MeatiHS No he’s 100% right. In fact I’ve tweeted before that I wish Twitch supported streaming different audio channels separately, so that viewers could adjust volume of the different channels individually.
