KotFT has ended up not feeling super impactful, minus a few cards that still hold up, like Plague and defile. Looking back on some sets and card design I have some hypotheses as to why

First: cards used to suck a lot more. I don’t mean by todays standards entirely either; even by the standards of those days most of the cards that got made sucked. Now todays stand-alone cards are better (like hero cards), but that’s because…

Second: cards are now designed more around synergy than independent power. If you look back on the frozen throne cards that were good at the time, they are mostly just cards you play bc they were good compared to other cards directly; not because they built around interactions

For independent cards to see play now requires they be better than they used to because synergy is more important. I feel that does make for a more interesting game in some important regards. Sometimes frustrating, but on average more fun.

This can go a bit too far at times, like how many sets feel designed around prebuilt packages. There’s a charm of discovery that is lost there. But I do prefer having cards that do things these days

@J_Alexander_HS I get the feeling that March of the Lich King will be another set with a lot of prebuilt packages based on how the card reveals are structured. Still hoping for more individually powerful cards though. https://t.co/cSPxVdSr3T

@UncorruptGG @J_Alexander_HS You'll see cards outside of packages in reveals too. :) Plenty of cards do their own thing.
