I should add, I used to discuss very similar points to the ones here in now-defunct blog posts from my pre-Blizzard days. More than 10 years ago I think--funny how the world is so different, yet also the same. Ones I remember are even from that era are: > https://t.co/JxuQbKy2oQ

Trying to understand how people analyzed truly minute DPS differences. Say between using haste gems or crit gems or something. It seemed to me even back then, that the importance of the decision was mostly social--correct gems signaled your min/max effort to fellow players.

And that was really interesting? Like that's a useful function! I think the toxicity surrounding that social dynamic was just nowhere near the omnipresent gaming-community problem like it is today.

I think I also wrote one about stuff like, food that gives 20 stats and more expensive food that gives 21 stats (so similarly to the gems example--guilds spend a lot of money to show off what kind of guild they are).

At the time I was writing from a player/guide perspective, trying to give advice like: you should probably worry about this stuff less than everyone says. For example you'd probably be better off spending your time practicing fights more rather than farming tiny amounts of stats.

@HamletEJ Hard agree with all this. A lot of little things can (and definitely do) add up, but the degree to which people over emphasized individual cases was often ridiculous.
