I’ve loved TLOU so far. This is a genuine question, not a complaint. Can someone explain why there is so much post-apocalyptic media where the main characters are an older man and a kid they protect? TLOU, the road, TWD games, station eleven… I’ve loved all of these! Why?

Most of the things I listed feature an older man and a kid who isn't their biological child. My first guess is that this plays off of some kind of natural paternal instinct which everyone can relate to?

@AlecoGereco It lets you hit lots of writing tropes and themes: paternalism, the “soft side of tough guy,” the odd couple, the opposites growing closer. And in the apocalyptic setting, it can show the despair/harshness next to the hope (in the form of the semi-magic child savior).

@AlecoGereco Lone Wolf and Cub is a trope that’s been around a long time. I think the post-apocalyptic part is what’s newer because it feels like the world is ending. I recommend this episode of the Ringer-Verse. Notably there was a ‘70s manga called Lone Wolf and Cub https://t.co/ngHVRUIGvv
