in short 1. coolest job i'd ever had up until that point 2. i started out SERIOUSLY underpaid and had to essentially take a second job while literally working on one of the biggest card games in the world, which sucked 3. the lawsuit news dropped like six weeks after i got hired

        4. nearly everybody at blizzard rules. genuinely mean that 5. there are a couple people at blizzard who seriously, seriously sucked. the people i had the biggest issues with no longer work at blizzard, and for a very good reason. 6. eventually, i did feel like my work was valued

          7. the c-suite is completely out of touch and actively took actions to torch employee morale on a like... monthly basis. hope stayed hi in spite of that due to worker solidarity and the interpersonal relationships i built, along with enjoying my work

            8. once i got hired full time, my pay went up, and i felt like i was being paid what i was worth at the time. i wouldn't go back for that amount now, though 9. i miss hearthstone and hope i might be able to work on it some day, but not any time soon 10. mams is adorable

closing thoughts: as rough as moments were working as a contractor, i honestly kinda knew what i was getting into. for one thing, i knew exactly how much i was getting paid, but i also knew i was being hired with literally zero experience.

for another, it's not like the issues around blizzard's culture were exactly a secret. i did my best to help improve things and stand up for the people who needed to be stood up for, and i think i succeeded. that strike was insane lmao

i'm glad i had the experience i did, i am proud to have gotten to worked on one of my favorite games, and i'm glad i got the experience i did. i owe blizz and especially my coworkers on the hearthstone team a ton, and i hope i can continue to give back some day

(i just wrote this on the fly in real time so, small clarifying note re. #6 i meant valued monetarily. even from the very beginning, i felt like my work was valued intrinsically and by the people i worked with. just not by the people who wrote the checks lol)

uhhh also there are a TON of people i'd wanna shout out on the hearthstone team but most of them don't have public presence sooo uhhh i guess i only have one person to actively thank rn lmao

.@Celestalon ty for taking a risk on me early on and having me test your top secret puzzles like... three months into my time at blizz? i thought you were insane for that but it made me feel very competent and like i was part of the team, and emotionally carried me tbh

purple and at least four other people i can think of off the top of my head were very directly vital in me having a positive experience at blizzard and setting me on the right path for qa, and i'll never forgive them- i mean, i'll never forget that
