Recently, I was sent to a surgeon to consult about a spot on my face my derm recommended I have removed. The surgeon suggested pointed out the number of scars I have from biopsies, rudely quipping “How many of these is it going to take before you realize you’re fine?” I left. 😞

This morning I found out I have an abnormal / problematic result from a separate biopsy done on my back, which will result in a pretty substantial excision of skin. And, there’s now also an adjacent area that’s likely of concern that needs to be biopsied now as well for removal.

In all, In 2 weeks, I’ll end up with scar that runs 4-6” diagonally across my spine. On top of the other 4” scar I already have on the right side of my back, and the other dozen biopsy scars all across the front and back of my torso.

My answer was “however many it takes to stay alive.” I’m thankful, truly, for access to routine health care which catches these so we can remove them before they’re full on cancer. I’d rather have scars and be alive.

BUT - I cry every time. I cried this morning. I’ll cry before surgery and I’ll probably cry again. I don’t like feeling like Frankenstein, covered in scars. I don’t like hiding my body to avoid being criticized. So actually 🤬 to that Dr. for putting my health at risk for vanity.

How many people has he deterred from receiving treatment because of his asinine behavior, to their detriment? How many receivee treatment and felt badly for it? Ass. And major props to my derm for reminding me I’m beautiful every time, and caring about my whole health. Angel.

@aureylian Hello fellow derm buddy in Community! We have much in common. I'm also covered in biopsy scoops and scars. Your skin is beautiful. 💜 You're beautiful. 💜
