What does it mean though? Is silver much bigger than gold and if I'm in silver 1 will I be moved to gold if my MMR stays the same?
When we first did the system, we set silver as the baseline tier. Each tier after silver cut the number of players in the tier about in half. So, gold was half of silver. Platinum was half of gold. Etc.
The change is just moving the top part of silver into the gold tier so that the majority of players are more evenly distributed between silver and gold instead of mainly sitting in silver.
It doesn't affect MMR at all. If you are currently silver 1, you'll probably place into gold next season assuming you do decent during those placement games.
