Season 2 Placement

I'm a bit confused. I finished last season at Platinum 3 and around 2450 MMR.

At the start of this season after 2 games Hotslogs showed my MMR at 2090. After winning 7 out of 10 placement games I've been placed at Gold 2.

I'm curious why winning 70% of your games drops you down almost an entire Rank (4+ steps below where I was). I get that Diamond 3 is the highest you can be possibly placed in so I understand that you might shift a little, but I at least figured I would be placed back in Platinum. I'm a bit confused how this works. Now I have to go back through the dreaded Gold climb.

How did you all place? Did you drop or climb?

Well, I went from being in Diamond 2 before the reset to Platinum 2 in the new season after going 4-6 in my placements. Have you changed it so that you no longer can get placed in Diamond 3 or Diamond league for that matter after doing your placements? Because this seems like quite a significant drop-off in rank when being put an entire league below what you originally had.

    Hey Frozen_Death_Knight,

Thanks for the info. If you're up for it, send me your battletag and I'll see if we can look into the details. If you remember, the following would be useful:

    • The personal adjustment you were getting at the end of the last season (a negative one would mean your MMR is lower than your rank)
    • Your record for placement games, including the order it happened

That's definitely an odd one, OUScotty. We can try pulling up your account info to see what's going on if you'd like to PM me the name.

As others mentioned, we normalize the MMR curve before each season, which pushes the outer edges more toward the center, but that doesn't account for this. Depending on where you were in Plat 3, with the normalization, that would be Plat 4 or 5 before the placement games.

Your final placement is based on your MMR, so the other way I could see this happening is if you were on a big win streak near the end of the season such that your rank was significantly ahead of your MMR. Were you getting high negative point adjustments for your games at the end of the season?
