Yes, you still get you gem refund. Changing your username will have zero impact on Gem reimbursement and/or Closed Beta rewards.

I tried setting a new name and had a weird error, figured it wasn't allowed so went ahead with my old name. Can I change it later?

Yes, however you will need to submit a ticket to Customer Report.

Related: Do you remember the error and/or username you tried? If there’s a bug or a false positive with choosing a new username I want to make sure it gets reported.
