The icon on the left of your screen is indicating network interruptions. This is definitely a fairly extreme example, if you post on our official tech support forums we can look at more detail.
Also if you press control-shift-N in game you'll bring up a network diagnostics overlay. Screenshots of that can also give more details on what problems you may be hitting.
