Hi, I'm Lore from Tankspot. AMA.

Hi guys! Lots of you wanted an AMA, so here goes! I'll be around most of the day and evening answering as much as I can.

Proof of identity: https://twitter.com/devolore/status/242702342619811841

A little about me to get things started: I'm 28, born and raised in Battle Creek, Michigan which is where my wife and I currently reside. I'm currently employed as Site Director of Tankspot, where I also host The Weekly Marmot and PST. On top of that, I produce and co-host Legendary on Gamebreaker.TV, and just recently started a new series called "On Tap" on my own Youtube channel where I look at games outside of WoW.

I've been playing WoW since beta, and started raiding in Classic around the time AQ released. I became Raid Leader of Months Behind in TBC, and took over as Guild Master in WOTLK. We were a top 100 guild during TBC (and I was one of the first Paladins to tank Illidan), but have been leaning a bit more casual since Wrath and Cataclysm.

Any question is fair game, although please recognize that there are likely to be topics I can't discuss. I'll try to answer as much as I can though!

UPDATE: Heading out for a bit to grab some dinner with the wife! I'll answer more when I get back, so feel free to keep asking :)

UPDATE: I'm back! Answering more questions

UPDATE: And I'm off to bed! Thanks everybody :)

Do you have a sort of "red/hot line" to Zarhym?

To a degree. The community team works with us when they can. It's not like I can just call him up though.

Is there a class in wow that you hate/dislike and can see yourself never ever playing ?

Not really. I used to say that about Rogues but I absolutely love my Rogue now. I've learned to never say never :)

do you often get free stuff when dancing on the mailbox as a female be?

Unfortunately I spend most of my idle time running laps around Orgrimmar. I kind of miss Dalaran for that :(

Hey, Lore. Personally, do you think there should be an event to close the Dark Portal? Or at least have it collapse and create a wormhole to another planet. We still have the Ethereal planet to go to. I think that would be awesome. Thoughts?

But if we close the Dark Portal, how do we get to Outland?

... on second thought, lets not go to Outland. Tis a silly place.

Then it sounds like I'm making an IPA, unless you have some sort of seasonal preference (with fall coming up and all). I'm talking Pumpkin Ales, Hard Ciders, or hell even an oatmeal stout as it starts to get colder.

Either way, expect some Devolver to show up at your door in the next 5-6 weeks or so :)

    Can't wait :)

Do you think player complaints about lack of content during Cataclysm's launch period, will keep Blizzard from redoing other old content such Outlands? (Which in my opinion desperately needs to be redone.)

Yes and no. 1-60 took a lot of work, but tier 11 was also the overall best tier of content in Cataclysm. I honestly don't know why so little effort went into Firelands and Dragon Soul. It's disappointing.

I despise the fact that you [Josh Allen] make a living from playing games. As if spending all of your time sat at a computer wasn't enough, the parasites who follow you (and therefore contribute to your wage) don't even spend their free time playing themselves but just live vicariously through you watching someone else play games, as if meaningless life came in such peaks.

If natural selection was still significant, half of the people reading this thread would have been naturally exterminated before they had the chance to develop this abnormal infatuation with a nerd who monotonously meanders on talking about an 8 year old game, let alone being genuinely interested in asking him questions about what he thinks about it or what he is thinking of playing next.

This whole AMA is a self-righteous, farcical left-wing movement towards the weak-minded, untermensch beta-males and 'GOTIS' who despite having no chance in reality still have half a hope that through these types of threads and the anonymous solidarity of the internet they will find happiness in life, furry or otherwise.

In all my hopes, you [all] will either die from the trans-fat acids you consume day after day (that you acquire from your takeaway-esque places of work) whilst watching these godforsaken streams and videos. Or, you will wake up from this dream world you are living, push yourself to receiving a meaningful education (unlike your anti-god, Devolore, expressed in an earlier comment) and make something with your pitiful lives.

All I ask of you is to ask yourselves when you are playing your games is, 'What the fuck am I actually doing? Is this why my parents wanted me? Is this all I can be? Is there more to life than sat in front of this computer screen? Perhaps spending hours a week watching someone else talking about games is not time well spent.'

Do not support these people making these videos. They are a blight on humanity as a whole and add nothing meaningful to anyone's lives. Do something useful with yours, take a walk outside and become a part of your nation's GDP.

~ Signed, someone on a higher salary, getting laid more than you.

    Cool story, bro.

~ Signed, someone who actually enjoys his life

It did. This is a kind of thing you remember after playing the class for awhile and longing for such a stupid thing to happen. Then again, Forbearance only lasted a minute back then, as opposed to Wrath's 3.0 2-minutes shenanigans. The limitation was removed (then readded, then removed in the stead of a non-retarded system) at the start of Wrath.

I'm glad to hear the story all the same.

Hrm. I stand corrected, then. Been quite a while. He must not have had DS active then, because I distinctly remember seeing wings.

Also, I live in Michigan and he lives in California, so no, we don't hang out in person.

  • Devolore

Posted 13 years, 3 months ago (Source)

Wait. Divine Shield and Avenging Wrath both procced/were restricted by Forbearance back then.

Incorrect. That limitation was added after 3.0.

Any properties you would like to see be made into MMO's? What is the future of WoW after level 100? and/or Speculate on what TITAN will be?

Before ME3 I would have said Mass Effect, but I'm no longer confident that EA/Bioware are capable of making a good Mass Effect MMO. Disappointing. Titan will be a F2P of some sort. Past level 100 is 3 expansions out, who knows if they'll even make 3 more expansions.

Hiya Lore, long time watcher here.

I'm sure you've been these questions in weekly marmots or so, but let's have a go again.

What's your tip to stay consistent in WoW? I know I've had on and off periods, and I do in Starcraft 2 too. What's your tip for staying consistent?

What job would you recommend to people with a WoW passion? Do you work or do you live off the revenue from youtube/streaming? What job could you imagine yourself having if you still wanted to live the lifestyle that you have?

    1. I don't worry about staying consistent. I'm not pushing for top 100 or Grandmaster or anything. If I don't feel like playing, I don't play.

    2. Do what you love doing, that's about it.

What is the biggest challenge that comes with producing content for YouTube that you think a lot of people don't really consider when trying to get into that game and what would your advice be to them, also do you wanna play BF3 together sometime on PC?

The amount of effort it takes to get a quality product out. I'll spend hours or more working on one video. I've had to stop producing a series because I was spending way too much time on it in the past. People think playing games for a living is easy -- it's not. I love doing it, but it's still hard work.

As for BF3 - I refuse to touch anything EA anymore. Not giving them any more of my money.

Do you think you're living a comfortable life off of YouTube/stream income? Or do you need to supplement with odd jobs and goodies?

How much does that all pull in per month (you can give a wide range if you're worried about disclosing confidential stuff)?

What's TankSpot doing for the MoP patch? Making Heroic-oriented strategy videos again? Focusing more on vlog-gy and webisode content?

What is the most important part (or parts) of your stream setup?

Who taught you to video edit? Or which resources did you use to learn? And what programs are you using lately to make strategy/complex videos? :D

    1. Between my wife and I we live relatively comfortably.

    2. Not going to answer, sorry.

    3. I'd like to get guides going properly again. Depends on whether we can pull them off adequately or not. Don't want to waste time on late guides.

    4. Xsplit. It just handles a lot of stuff. Otherwise, probably the CPU. Getting an Avermedia Live Gamer HD capture card in soon, hoping that's as good as I've heard.

    5. Mostly self-taught. I just kind of poke around in Premiere and google if I need to know how to do something.

Why did Ailena part ways with Tankspot/Weekly Marmot?

How do you feel about Month's Behind going to MoP (Ranking predicition? Stronger than you've ever been?)

    1. Wouldn't say a "close" friend, he's just a pretty awesome guy.

    2. That's not a question for me to answer.

    3. I think we have one of our most dedicated rosters ever at the moment. Our raid schedule limits us pretty hard, but I like our lineup.

    Hey Lore,

I actually just started watching your stuff (esp. The Weekly Marmot and PST) and it's really helped me enjoy the game more.

I was wondering if you have any thoughts as to why the outcry against Cata and 4.3 specifically seem so much louder than at the end of Wrath. Is it honestly just bad content in 4.3?

Yep. Honestly just bad content in 4.3. Dragon Soul is the second worst instance they've ever released. It's really just plain bad.

Why does Tankspot do very few 10-man videos? I feel like they would be in higher demand than 25 mans and the mechanics and strategies can be quite different.

As a long-time player myself that has raid tanked since vanilla, I've grown bored with the game. Yeah I come back here and there but it's mainly because of in-game friends. Other than the fact that it's your job (which I think is awesome!) what keeps you motivated to play WoW still after all these years?

Hey Lore, do you guys have any further plans to keep uploading the Legendary podcasts to iTunes? My guess is you guys want to push the website, but I can't listen to the podcasts that way 95% of the time. Anyway, I was just curious, as the last episode was uploaded August 9.

    Thanks regardless, and great work!

I think the sub model will still work for them if they keep rolling promotions like the annual pass, they got a lot of people to sign that contract and the players got a lot of free goodies from it, including a full game.

Loved your videos bro, and this is quite an AMA, you're actually answering anything.

Honestly I think it'll be more of a question of at which point can they make more money off of a F2P model. That's the biggest reason you see so many people switching to that model these days -- it's actually more lucrative.

Why do you think they took out weapon master and armor master specializations from blacksmithing, do you think these would bring more variety back to the profession?

Specializations have been a bit odd in the past. If you make the rewards BOP, then you either have a "best" specialization for specific classes, or which specialization you pick doesn't matter. If they're BOE, you dilute the number of people who can possibly have a specific pattern, which on some servers can mean certain items just aren't available. I think they're an interesting idea, I just don't know that there's a good way to make them work in WoW.

Clearly you've gotten more effective at time management, but it still baffles me to see the sheer amount and quality of the content you push out on a weekly basis. Any tips on managing your time better?

What are your favorite Raid Bosses? From a player's perspective, from a design perspective, and favorite lore boss (a character who was already in the lore before their introduction as a raid boss).

What was your least favorite fight ever? For what reason?

Most favorite boss fight to do was tanking Ossirian in AQ20. I just really liked the frantic running from place to place across a giant room while also trying to tank the boss and keep aggro off of people who were doing double damage. Close second was tanking Illidan. Very particular motions are fun.

Favorite design, hmm. I really liked Staghelm. Any fight that puts phase transitions in the hands of the players tends to make me happy, because it adds to the strategy of figuring out when to force those transitions (Hydross is an exception, but mostly because of all the resistance gear farming). Alysrazor was also a lot of fun.

Favorite lore boss would probably be Teron Gorefiend. He was one of the first bosses who I ended up spending a ton of time on wowwiki (or wowpedia nowadays) just reading up on the story behind him. I also really liked the quest line that introduced him in WoW.

I have an odd question that isn't necessarily directed towards Tankspot specifically, but... here goes:

What are your thoughts on websites that have a major userbase like for example WoW Insider or even sites like Warcraft Hunters Union(a WoW Insider columnists hunterccentric website and podcast) ... these sources and other like-sources of WoW info not having articles written by anyone who accomplishes anything in WoW?

I know that's kind of an odd question to ask... I realize that there is a large casual to semi-casual userbase, but I suppose equating it to american football coverage is fair. They largely have former coaches and players covering football - people who have reached close to the pinnacle or the pinnacle of the sport, but also have some desirably personality in which to cover the sport.

Yet in WoW, just as a hunter, I can't help but sort of feel negatively about Frostheim's coverage when I know he never even attempts heroic mode bosses nor does he have any half way decent PVP ratings.

Do you have any thoughts on popular WoW bloggers and youtubers gaining a fanbase on delivering information when they themselves are unaccomplished players?

I don't think it particularly matters what you've accomplished if your insight and logic is sound. Oftentimes experience teaches that, but it can be learned elsewhere. In the case of WoW, there's a lot to be said for learning what the top theorycrafters have to say and then parsing it out for the masses to understand.

Hell, I'm not exactly a top tier raider myself (at least not anymore) but I'd like to think most of what I have to say is fairly intelligent. If someone's information is just bad, that's one thing. I don't think it particularly requires any more investigation than that.

I got you to spoil the S2 finale of Walking Dead for my friend by commenting about it in your stream one night. It's still the best moment of my internet life.

I'm curious as to how you are handling class swaps come MoP and how it effects your "raider status" of those that swap. I have like half my roster looking to swap come MoP and can't decide how to iron all of it out.

    O_o

We handle class swaps pretty organically. If someone wants to change, cool, but if we don't have a spot for whatever they're changing to, that's their problem, and we're going to recruit to fill the old spot (unless someone else is changing to fill it).

Have you ever played any MMOs pre WoW? If so which ones?

How do you feel boss mechanics have evolved over the years? Have they gotten easier/harder, boring/fun?

If we had the class balances, glyph and talent tree system we have right now when the game launched how different do you think the game would of been in terms of challenge?

I really enjoy your stuff, it's pretty hard to find someone to talk about WoW in a coherent manner and you do a really good job at it. Thanks and keep it up.

Played a lot of MMOs before WoW. Biggest were Anarchy Online, SWG, and Asheron's Call 2. Also played a bunch of City of Heroes and dabbled in a few others whose names I forget. Played a bunch of MUDs too.

Bosses have gotten more complicated over the years, don't think that makes them particularly more difficult. It'd be nice to see some simple fights that are only difficult numerically again. Sort of "are you good at your class" checks.

I honestly don't think it would have been that much different just because, if we had everything we have now, the encounters would have been designed around it. Everything gets built with the game mechanics in mind.

    Thanks :)

Are there any changes in MoP that you think are negative?

Tough to say so far. I'm a bit iffy on the implementation of the Charms of Good Fortune. I love the concept, just a bit concerned that they'll end up being too much extra work. Thing is, problems have a tendency to not really be apparent until they're available to the masses. We'll have to see how things play out in the first few weeks after MoP releases.

Have you considered making your shows in podcast form (ie available in itunes ) For the most part they seem like they would work with out the video and I think it would be a lot more convienent for listener. Is it just more difficult to get money from podcasts vs youtube or are there some other reason

Monetization is definitely a part. Were it solely up to me I'd probably release TWM/PST in an audio-only format, but I do have a responsibility to ZAM that I'd rather not undermine.

Obviously WoW will not be around forever. What happens when WoW dies off and loses popularity? What is your long term plans?

Talked about this a bit elsewhere. Project Titan has potential. Also expanding to cover other games than just WoW already.

Hey man! I dont even play WoW anymore, but all the time i've raided i have been regulary alt tabing to tankspot. I was wondering, how does one starts going into pro gaming?

I don't really consider myself a "pro gamer" in that I don't compete in tournaments. That's more a matter of working hard to be the best. In terms of commentary, best way to start is to just start. Make some content and put it out there. It's a lot of work though -- a lot more than people realize.

WoW isn't my primary game right now (it shares the throne with about 50 other games that alternate every week), but it is still the one I have spent the most time in overall. I'd have to think about how/where it would even work. Thanks for the interest though!

I see, on that note, can you speculate on blizzard going to a F2P platform if they lose enough subs? On the same token also providing more of the "pay" features that some of the other MMO's have done/tried?

Will probably happen eventually, depends on how long they can stay on a sub model.

With TotalBiscuit no longer covering WoW, we won't have an Azeroth Daily for MoP. Would you ever consider doing a daily show at least for the first couple months of the expansion pack? Just as a one stop video for all patch/raid/bugs/etc for the new content?

Have considered it, but there honestly isn't enough going on to make a daily show interesting right now. I have enough trouble just coming up with topics for The Weekly Marmot some weeks. I'm also currently doing 3 different series for World of Warcraft, any new series would most likely be on some other topic.

Big fan of all your work, especially the live streams. Even when you play games I'm not big on it's still entertaining.

Have you kept up with Tribes at all lately? I know you used to stream it a bit back in beta.

Also, what would you do for a Klondike Bar?

I haven't been playing much Tribes lately. One of our guild members, Immune, actually got pretty heavily involved in the eSports side of it (he played in a few tournaments which were shoutcast, was a pretty scary sniper), but Hi-Rez has mishandled that game so hard that even he seems to not care about it anymore.

    I'd kill a man.

What is your vision on the eSports community and what place has World of Warcraft in it?

Unfortunately, Blizzard isn't supporting WoW enough to make it a real eSport. A true eSport can be managed completely independently of its parent company. That means functionality like replays or, at the bare minimum, a spectator mode so that the game can be broadcast to viewers. WoW obviously does not have either. It's unfortunate, because they obviously have the capability to create one (which you can see in action at major tournaments), but they're not bothering to give it to us.

What would you say are your top few addons that you cannot live without?

Why did you decide to get a Horde hockey jersey? I'm assuming you're a hockey fan, if so what's your favourite team?

How close do you work with other people from the Zam network? e.g. Cairenn from WoWI?

Top few addons I can't live without, hmm... honestly aren't that many anymore. I need some sort of tooltip addon (I was using TipTac but it appears to have self-destructed), I like Grid but I'm not a healer so I don't find it mandatory, and some sort of boss mod is essential (I'm using DBM these days). Auctionator makes using the auction house less of a pain in the ass, but everything else is just to pretty up the screen.

The company that made the jerseys (I can't remember who it was at the moment, unfortunately) actually just sent me one. It's kind of weird, I'm assuming they wanted to promote them, but they discontinued them only a couple months after I finally got mine. I'm not a huge hockey fan -- been to a few local games, and I like watching it, just never really got into it. My older brother is really big on it though, actually played for a while.

I don't work too closely with most of ZAM, other than Perculia from Wowhead who I've been collaborating with on a few preview videos here and there. I did meet Cairenn at the MoP press event this year, she seems nice.

What got you into gaming as, I guess, your profession? What were you doing before WoW came out/you got heavily involved with your site and stream? How was the transition from that to what you do now? What does your family think, lol :)

What got me into gaming as a profession was gaming as a hobby. I've been gaming since basically ever, and was already doing a lot of the same stuff I do today, just not in a way that I could make a living off of it. Just eventually grew to where I could start earning some income from it, and from there into enough to make it a full time job.

My previous job was as an IT manager for a plastics recycler. I handled the website and all their random computer stuff. There wasn't enough of that to keep me busy though so they also had me do QA testing on the different types of plastics they had coming in to recycle. Basically that meant I was burning plastic and smelling the fumes. Not exactly the healthiest job. Glad I'm not doing it anymore.

My family is supportive. They weren't always, but I think once I started making money off of it they started to realize that it's actually something legitimate.

I've been playing WoW in a semi-casual nature for 6 years now. I would love to part of a more "hardcore" raiding guild, but I deliver pizza for a living. As such, my schedule varies greatly week to week. Is it possible to be a raider and not have a consistent schedule?

Also, I love WoW but I hated Cataclysm. For me Mists is going to make or break WoW. Do you think that a lot of other players feel the same way? If so, can Mists "recapture the magic" if you will? (For all of that will say "If you hate Cataclysm why are you still playing?" I play because I have friends that play and I'm hopeful that Mists can make me want to play again)

Definitely possible. There are many guilds that run on a sort of "sign in" raiding schedule, where they have specific raiding days and if you're going to be available on that day, you sign up. I don't think it's possible for those to push progression as hard as a guild with a dedicated roster, but they do exist.

I do think a lot of people feel that way. I'm optimistic for Mists, but it's definitely a make or break thing.

Concerning WoW guides: As I was quite the nooby back in WotLK, Tankspot's guides were the place to be, basically. However, since Cataclysm, I must say that a lot of the guides have started coming out slower and slower compared to the speed at which I progressed (which did get faster and faster), and I found myself shifting towards other guides, like raw kill footage of high-end guilds, written guides from said guilds, and Fatboss videos.

This all might be because, well, I'm nowhere near as god-awful as I was before, I now am GM and raidleader of a Horde-first guild on my realm (which has a rather unimpressive horde side, we killed Spine HC a few days before you, Madness HC a few after, but aiming higher in MoP)

Real question being: Are you still planning on being a big source for guides, or are you going to shift your focus to the weekly Q&A show in PST and talkshow in Marmot Weekly, now that you're definitely not the nr 1 go-to source for raiding guides anymore, at least not for me.

I talked a bit about this somewhere else in this AMA, but yeah, we sucked in Cataclysm. Want to rebuild the community around Tankspot. Get more good minds in there producing good content, and promote it as such. Should have more to show on that topic very soon.

Does Month's Behind have any special rules governing behavior or guild operations that exist because of the high visibility of your guild. As an example, when I was in Eventide, there was a strict rule against any sort of drama or use of trade chat for anything but trade, or speaking at all in general chat other than to congratulate other guilds. Anything like that?

We don't have any particularly hard set rules like that other than "don't be a douchebag." Douchebags piss me off and have a tendency to find themselves guildless.

I did that for a while, but Xsplit has some issues with audio quality. There's a "snapping" sound from time to time. They supposedly fixed that in 1.1 (I haven't tested yet) so I might switch back just to make things easier, but having the audio in Audacity also lets me run a couple filters to clean up the audio/remove background noise.

BIGASS POST WARNING, actual question at the end

-I had this idea of server-wide questing. The way it works is that, instead of normal questing like we know it, everything in WoW would start off without anything in the world. Let's just say in Elwynn Forest, people would start in the abbey and as they move out they can (through an NPC) fund the creation of Goldshire.

-Then goldshire would only have one building and players can do anything to help progress it. If youre a crafter you can literally just go gather materials, refine them and donate them to goldshire's supply depot for exp and rewards. DPSers can go kill kobolts for the repeatable "patrol" quest, tanks and healers could escort supply caravans from stormwind for exp/loot. Upgrading buildings would require a specific amount of specific items, say 3000 bricks crafted by miners, 200 window frame modules from engineers, etc.. That way goldshire would, in time, upgrade to a bigger town with an INN, blacksmith, vendors etc...

-From there players would expand into redridge mountains and continue like that, crafters can level to 85 purely by gathering and crafting and building the towns and see them grow (get upgraded), everyone else can do exactly the same with quests to kill orcs, etc...

-Obviously this would require a MUCH LARGER world than there is today, with decent travel times between locations (goldshire -> darkshire would be the same as hyjal -> theramore now perhaps). Alot of the world would be procedurally generated but using the same seed number ofc.

-Things would take time to move along, like a couple of weeks between each settlement's creation (and longer to fully upgrade). Then there would be faction upgrades, like once goldshire is fully upgraded players could work towards upgrading the road with fancier bricks, side rails, pretty flowers and patrols. As the zone gets upgraded so do the zone bonuses, in time players can start upgrading the zone bonuses with +10% exp, +10% out of combat speed, +5% gathering crits, etc... At the end, upon a zone completion players would have a huge farm to make towards making the zone "friendly/safe" instead of "contested".

-Anything ouside of the "safe" zones would be considered contested (or neutral if no buildings being developed). There enemies would quickly scale up in dificulty, with raid bosses essentially being 2 zones away from current friendly zones. Players wouldnt be able to go very far without getting killed. Bosses would be similar to guild wars 2, scaling together with player numbers.

-As players, in time, expand to cover the whole game area the devs can spawn world events. Remember the first undead invasion? that could be done similar to RIFT's invasions with undead coming from the necropoli and raiding towns and destroying everything and pushing players back to their starting zones. This would be, essentially, a reset to force players to rebuild the world all over again but with heavy lore attached to it like "oh the lich kind is attacking, prepare yourselves etc", after players rebuild they eventually reach naxxramas and, only then, they unlock the raid to, uh, raid it.

-Did i mention this works as world pvp? Horde, when contesting, say, arathi highlands together with alliance would have free open world pvp similar to guild wars 2 WvW, then its anyone's game until a faction completly captures the zone and triggers "contested" on the adjacent zone. theoreticly the horde could push the alliance back to elwynn forest.

-DOTA style NPCs. Players can pay, for example, 90k gold, 50 crafted epic swords, 50 crafted epic sets of armor to spawn a wave of 50 elite guardsmen who would attempt to run towards the next zone to attack it and requiring either a huge zerg or an organised raid to defeat them (+ open world pvp at same time). All of this would be dynamic player objectives everywhere rewarding exp and justice/honour points, with complete gear sets every 10 levels.

-There's alot more of i could talk about in detail but i wish there was an mmo like this, ofc WoW isnt but how do you think WoW or Titan would work and would it work well/be fun as something like this?

Apologies, but this is a bit much for me to get through. Trying to answer as many questions as I can :)

Rewards should be specific for the actions you're taking. If I'm working hard at raiding, I should get raiding-focused rewards. If I'm working hard at PVP, I should get PVP-focused rewards. If I'm working hard at making gold, I should get something unique to that.

  • Devolore

Posted 13 years, 3 months ago (Source)

Can you explain this a little more?

State of the mmo industry as in longevity for a single series or if the industry as a whole is slowing down?

It'll say a lot about whether or not subscription-based MMOs have a future anymore. There's a very heavy surge in popularity of the free-to-play/buy-to-play model (Guild Wars 2, Firefall, Planetside 2, and games like SWTOR going F2P) at the moment, while the sub-based games seem to be dwindling or outright dying (I think Wildstar is planning on a subscription, and that's the only upcoming MMO I can think of with a sub that looks to be any good).

WoW's success is kind of a thermometer of whether or not a sub-based model can even work anymore, at least at the moment. Everything else is pointing towards F2P.

I think there's a balance that they've been sort of flipping back and forth on both sides of. Best difficulty balance so far was around Ulduar or ICC. TBC was too exclusive, Cataclysm was too easy. They seem to be terrified of letting players fail nowadays, which is not compelling gameplay. I can't feel successful if there was never another possibility.

    Hey Lore,

I just read that you said you dropped out of college. I just began college and I hate it, and the lifestyle of living alone. I feel like improving my art skills at home and getting a part time job is a better choice than working hard out here to get a piece of paper. I'd like to know your stance on going to college, and what you think I should do.

Thanks for doing this AMA. :)

Depends on what you want to do. I don't recommend dropping out. If I could do it again I would have just stuck it out at the first college I went to and gotten that piece of paper. It's stupid, but 4 years for a piece of paper is worth 8 or more years of actual work.

This is very stupid, and I promise it's in a joking fashion but....I raided during Wrath pretty heavily and used Tankspot's videos many times for raids. One in particular stands out, and has always irked me because of the impact it had on players. That video is Ciderhelm's Sindragosa video.

Do you want to know why it irked me? One word: Buffet. How do you pronounce that? Yes, Buff-ay. Buff. A. Not Buff-it. Everytime I did a raid and we were required to be in vent I would hear people mispronounce that word, and I'm sure it was because they heard it pronounced that way in the video. I cursed this man in my sleep nightly, tossing and turning amidst a slew of endless, lucid nightmares stemming from this person's mispronunciation. Terrifying, hellish dreams unfurled within my psyche and had I not awoken from them at the very second I did, at times, I feared the dreams might have taken me. You tell this man. You tell this man his mistake, and of the maddening downward spiral it has inflicted upon another human. That is all.

EDIT: Oh also keep up the good work & stuff.

    It's actually pronounced Buff-it: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/buffet

A buffet (buff-ay) is a table with a whole bunch of food on it :P

    Ps. Buff mages.

Andrew from the stream here. /wave Question about being a professional gamer as a job, how do you get paid? Outside of twitch commercials and small donations?

I receive a paycheck from ZAM for running Tankspot and creating content. Otherwise that's pretty much it: twitch commercials, youtube revenue, and the occasional donation.

A while ago I think you made mention that a "certain" video game company offered you a job, but you would have to quit doing WoW videos. You obviously turned them down.

Do you have any interest now in working as a game developer (for say Blizzard on WoW or Titan) if it meant limiting your involvement in your current exploits?

At some point I'd like to get into game design. I'm not sure exactly when that transition would take place. Ideally it would be done in a way that allowed me to continue making online content.

What made you decide to do what you do? Also, how long did it really take for things to "lift off" for you?

Wasn't really any one thing that made me decide to do it. I didn't just sit down one day and go "I'm gonna be an internet!" If I had to pick one particular moment though it was when I left my previous job. I was working for a plastics recycler as a combination IT manager and QA tester (testing the plastics, not software). The oil crisis a few years back hit the plastic industry hard and they had to cut my hours, so I decided to jump into doing the internet thing full time. As for how long it took for things to "lift off"... probably about 8-12 years. I don't remember exactly when I started doing online content but it was long before WoW :)

I have been a long time follower of you Lore, Have always appreciated your opinions and views and think you do a great job at being a "Professional Nerd" as I have heard you call yourself. Having recently graduated from college with a Digital Media degree I have really been looking to get into the same line of work as you, do you have any tips for actually getting started in the video guide/streaming community or is focusing more on Youtube Views and vids more important? Thanks for all you do and keep up the great work. PS. If there are ever any job openings at Tankspot or Gamebreaker.tv Please hit me up.

Community is #1 most important. If you build your community and do right by them, they'll spread the word and the rest will come. Lots of people deal with that in different ways but the one thing you'll always see behind the most popular youtubers is a strong following.

Alright, I gotta know, how do you balance your personal life, your mmo playing time (because I know you're not just playing WoW all the time), and the SHITLOAD of web shows you do? Edit: You answered this question further down. You can skip this. ON TO THE NEXT ONE!

Also, I got burned out on WoW after about 4 years of straight playing, then a 5th year of on-and-off. I found I just couldn't come back to it, or really any MMO with a similar play system. What about the game (or the community) had kept you with it for its full run?

It's the people, really. The gameplay is decent but honestly nothing spectacular. When I just want to kill time I generally find myself playing any number of other games, but I have a lot of friends in WoW that keep drawing me back in.

Hm, okay, a few questions here. 1. If you plan to play MoP, will you roll up a Monk (any species)? 2. What was one of the first console RPG's you've played. And if you have one, what's your favorite? 3. Are you a cat or dog person?

I'll roll a monk, probably a Pandaren, not sure how much I'll play it. First console RPG I played was Phantasy Star 3 on the Genesis. It was my older brother's and I managed to erase his save game. He was pissed. Favorite console RPG is probably Final Fantasy 6 or maybe 9 (7 is good but overrated, I felt more drawn in by the storytelling in those two). Definitely a cat person. Cats are better than people.

If you could roll back to an expansion/patch, which would it be?

I wouldn't. I don't think there's any expansion or patch that's been perfect, and rolling back to one feels kind of defeatist to me. Rather learn from past mistakes and improve.

In the past you've mentioned your odd sleep schedule, how you're usually going to bed when most other people are waking up (if I'm remembering that correctly). Can you (briefly) describe a Day in the Life of Lore?

And secondly, how does this sleep schedule influence your interactions with the outside world (friends, relatives, the wife, normal business hours, etc)?

Wake up, dick around on the computer for several hours, hopefully I've been productive, go to sleep. I don't really keep to a particular sleep schedule which is both good and bad. Obviously it's hard to get things done when you're waking up at 9pm some days, but I've also gotten used to occasionally having next to no sleep when I need to get something done.

i know you always try to look at things from a overall design perspective.

and with seeing games like dayz that completely throws away any in stone written decisions and become unique because of that is fascinating.

ive recently observed myself searching and trying to loot "bosses in gw2" but there is sometimes nothing. but wow thought me that should be always something shiny. so it was kind of weird in the beginning.

or character lvls. i remember playn an mmo where you did not have a character lvl you had skill lvls and they lvled up by using them and that spin was refreshing.

what are some design things/decisions that bother you the most in the mmo world.

I think MMOs are too married to hotkeys these days. Hoping games like Firefall can break that mold a bit and teach the industry that "MMO" doesn't have to mean "slow and clunky."

In fact, the thing I hate the absolute most in the gaming industry right now are the games like Tera and RaiderZ that claim to have "action combat" that actually ends up being even slower and clunkier than the hotkey MMOs. The combat is just so bad that it does nothing but reinforce the idea that all MMOs have to have slow and boring combat. So again, really hoping Firefall does well.

Who would win in a duel between you and MikeB in WoW, SWTOR, Secret world, Tekken 6 and in real life? Both top geared, except real life. Then you're wearing speedos.

In WoW, MikeB wins because he's a prot warrior and I'm a rogue.

In SWTOR, we fight for a good 5-10 mins before EA comes in and ruins everything.

In Secret World, the same thing happens, but it's hard to tell what's EA and what's Funcom.

In Tekken 6 we'd probably both play Eddie and just mash buttons until eventually one of us does something that looks cool (I don't actually know if Eddie's in Tekken 6, the last one I played was 3).

IRL he would beat my ass. He's got army training, I have Arby's training. Although if we bust out some LMFAO I'd totally win the wiggle battle.

My question: Why did you pick paladin as your main class?

I actually raided as a Warlock, a Priest, and a Warrior in classic. We were horde, so no Paladins. When TBC hit we needed someone to reroll, and I was pretty quick to level, so I did. Was 3rd 70 Horde Pally on Eredar, IIRC. Plus I liked the idea of Paladin tanking. Just sort of stuck with it since.

Do you think Game web-casting demographics tend to favor the 20 somethings for authors as they match the majority of viewership and by late 30s the audience just isn't there, no matter how good? (asking on what you see beyond casting on Titan really)

If so, do you think the gaming industry will still support web-casting in general and you envisage a more Gary Gannon type role for yourself, getting the sponsors/chairing rather than being the topic expert?

Are you going to write a game design book?, think you would do a good job, enough web presence for a publisher pickup and a good start in sales from your viewers.

Most important question, are you going to change race on Lore to Pandarian, as Blood Elves in general lack any credibility, furry Bamboo chewers the way to go...

    Keep up the good work

I think at the moment most of the hosts tend to be in their 20s just because that's where most of the people who grew up in a society that was okay with gaming are. That said, more gaming personalities are over 30 than you think. I myself am going to be 30 in just over a year, I don't see myself stopping just because I'm "old". It's mostly just a question of what you apply yourself towards.

As for a book, I'm not planning on it. I'd highly recommend picking up The Art of Game Design by Jesse Schell, though.

    Pandaren can't be paladins.

1- Great hair. It really has a nice Lionel Richie vibe circa All Night Long. As a balding male, I'm insanely jealous.

2- In the most recent episode of the Legendary podcast, you were discussing PVP vs PVE concerning balancing the two. How, in your opinion, would be the best way to achieve this? Do you think just scrapping the balance idea is best? I think it's a very interesting concept, for example, Lay on Hands or other spells were just completely different between PVP and PVE. Do you feel like by trying to keep the spells so similar across game types, are Blizzard shooting themselves in the foot? Do you think the game would be terr off if Blizzard just threw the old model out and instead of balancing spells across game types would allow spells to be different depending on which type you were playing?

    1. Thanks :)

    2. Yeah, I think they're spending way too much effort on trying to keep the game playing exactly the same in both PVE and PVP. They don't have to make the spells completely different in function, but they could make a lot of headway with just some number tweaking.

I've noticed you enjoy the occasional adult beverage...

I myself enjoy them too, and have taken up the hobby of home-brewing beer. I've gotten pretty good at it over the last year even!

My question is... If I was to brew you a beer, what kind of beer would prefer? Flavorings you would absolutely love? And most importantly... What Devolore-themed name would you like it to be called?

(P.S. It's about that time for me to brew another batch, so I'm more than likely going to do what you've asked for and mail you some as a way to say thanks for all the entertainment you've provided us)

I honestly don't know enough about the sort of alchemical magic that goes into creating beer to give any real input there. All I know is I'm generally a fan of IPAs and red lagers, and that locally brewed stuff tends to be better than the mass produced garbage (with some exceptions, I love me some Newcastle).

As for a name, I'd call it the devolver. That's where the devo in devolore comes from, and beer has the tendency to do that anyway :P

Whats the most important thing you have down to get yourself to where you are now?

Learn from my mistakes. One thing I swear by that an alarmingly few people in this industry actually do is read the comments. All of them. Yeah, it's basically like wading knee deep in sewage, but if you know how to read into what people mean and not so much what they're saying, you can get some extremely valuable feedback from even the most volatile of posts. I also watch my own stuff, especially when I'm just starting a new series, to make sure I know what the final experience I'm putting out is instead of just the bits and pieces while I'm editing.

I would really like to see tankspot get back to its former glory of being the go to source for raiding help. I really want to go on youtube and see Aliena and Lore doing weekly marmots again. I really loved watching everything Tankspot back in Wrath but it seems like you guys kind of fell off in Cata. Any chance we see you, Aliena and just tankspot as whole get back to the top?

We definitely sucked in Cata. No real two ways about that. Part of the issue is that video guides as a whole have just been kind of dropping off lately. Not only are there a ton of them out there now (we were basically the only group doing them for a long time in Wrath), but there are people a lot more capable than me putting them together faster.

We tried taking a different approach with the guides for Dragon Soul, but that backfired pretty hard. Not only were they way more difficult and time consuming to actually get out the door, but the better presentation didn't really make up for it.

I have a few ideas for stuff to do in MoP, but my first priority is getting the community of Tankspot back in working order. We were at our best when there were a whole bunch of bright minds posting guides and theorycrafting. Lately it's more or less just Lore's tumblr. I want to get the community involved again.

If you could change one thing about MoP, what would it be? I'm pretty excited for all the things coming, even our fist neutral race. Do you think this the first step towards seeing more blend of races being able to choose whichever faction?

Mechanically, I'd scrap the BMAH. I don't like it at all. But honestly, the bigger problem is their marketing. They're focusing too hard on selling the pandas and pokemon and not paying enough attention to the solid direction they're taking the new raid and PVP content, which is making a lot of the existing playerbase feel like there's nothing new for them in MoP.

As a former "hard core" WoW player. (First Pallies to tank PRe-nerf muru and KJ, and Illi, landed a World 40th I believe with muru kill, 2800 ele sham in 3s this season, ((sorry if it seems like I am bragging, just trying to show where I am coming from) and always being high ranked with logs, and raid progression I found that there is no way to stand apart from the rest anymore ( i.e. savior of azeroth title and no more realm first extra's, excluding an achievement) as most players who raid on a regular basis have achieved that, whether it be pre-nerf, or post nerf. Do you see this continuing on in MoP and future expansions, and with continuing on the current path that Blizzard is heading with WoW they are starting to shift main focus away from pve and pvp to more expanded and player friendly areas (i.e. Pokebattles and farmville). Do you for see WoW shifting altogether to become more of a social mmo?

I should also note that I no longer play WoW anymore, as I couldn't properly balance my wow life, with my real life, and that took its toll both socially, mentally and physically.

They're actually making a lot of solid moves towards recognition for top-tier players again in MoP, everyone just has trouble seeing past the pandas and pokemon. In particular, the feats of strength for clearing content without nerfs active will be pretty nice (and personally I'm hoping they attach a title to them).

Actually wanted to get it out last week but ended up being super busy. Hoping to get it out ASAP. Gotta get PST out first though.

If you had 3 wishes, what would they be?

    1. All of my friends to live in the same area so I can hang out with everyone whenever I want

    2. A personal maid, so my wife can stop interrupting my gaming to do things like laundry and dishes

    3. A nice philly cheesesteak. I'm really hungry for a philly cheesesteak right now for some reason.

Favorite game that you never got to finish?

How do you feel about MoP?

    Enjoying GW2?

    Fallout 3.

I'm optimistic, they're making a lot of good choices.

Yep (I responded in more detail elsewhere here)

I have an additional question that pertains to this topic. How do you feel about the state of Paladins going into MoP? How do you feel Ret and Prot will perform at lvl 90, PvE wise?

Tough to say right now, any numbers we can pull at the moment can easily change by 90. Speaking outside of numbers, I feel both specs are more capable than they've ever been thanks to the extra utility from the new talent system.

Not sure yet. Considering switching to my Warlock. Not out of any particular issues with the Paladin, just for a change of pace. Been playing the Paladin for a long time now.

I was in your guild once back in T11, anyway how long do you think you will be able to sustain yourself through videos/ video games etc before getting a regular type of job or something along the lines of that?

If I do ever end up getting a "regular" job, it'll be in the video games industry. I don't really see anything else as an option anymore.

Hey Lore, I am wondering, how long did you do content for free before getting any real money from it? Thanks.

A while. I was a bit lucky and managed to be at the right place at the right time to get involved with Tankspot, but even then it wasn't until Ulduar and the video guides that we started actually making anything over what was just necessary to keep the site active. I've actually been doing online content for a long time though, even before WoW. I used to do interviews for a Descent 3 fansite :P

What is your opinion on the changes to Warlocks. Has it made you begin to play your lock again?

I'm loving the Warlock changes. Been tinkering a lot with Demonology. Actually been considering playing my lock as my main in MoP, just for a change of pace. He was actually the first character I did any sort of raiding on (ZG back in classic) so it'd be kind of poetic I suppose.

So is one of the main reasons you play alot of video games is because of the 9month winters in the northern US? (Originally from South Dakota so i been through many)

Probably part of it, Michigan weather is a bit weird. I've always been more of an indoors person though. Even during the summer as a kid, when my parents made me go outside, I just took a book out with me :P

Do you always see yourself covering MMOs, or would you possibly venture elsewhere in your gaming content?

Looking forward to your future online, whatever you decide.

Not just MMOs. Actually planning on getting back into casting when Heart of the Swarm beta starts (hopefully soon!)

I actually covered two MOBAs and a first person shooter for the first three episodes of On Tap, also :)

How did you and your wife meet?

We were both playing an online CWRPG (that's a creative writing RPG -- everyone takes turns writing out the next bit of the story). We hated each other. It was destiny or something.

Lore, I am a skilled player that has been held back by guilds in the past and the only way better guilds will take you is with Acheivments, Item Level, and combat logs. Being in a lesser guild has its limitations to all three of those, what would be the best advice you could give to someone trying to move up in the WoW Raiding scene?

Be geared and ready to go by the time raids open in MoP, and if possible, be on a server with a healthy raiding environment. Expansions tend to kind of even the playing field for everyone.

I suppose it's more as a company it'd allow them to survive as they could expand to a new audience using titan and maybe (I hope) release Warcraft 4 to keep their Warcraft base, maybe I'm hoping for too much.

They've also got Starcraft and Diablo to survive on (although the latter's been a bit rough), so I don't imagine they'd be in too tough of a spot

Since we're in /r/wow this might be slightly off-topic, but as you mentioned GW2, what's your experience with it so far and will it majorly change your effort put into WoW?

    Don't forget to check out /r/guildwars2 ;)

    I'm already subbed to /r/guildwars2 :P

I like GW2, it's the perfect second MMO I think. It's fun, and it doesn't demand a ton of your time to enjoy playing it.

If you're interested, I put out a video about some of my thoughts on the game on my Youtube channel (link). More of those in the works too :)

Hey Lore! I have watched your streams/content for a long time now and I have a few questions - more based on WoW then anything else if you have time to answer!

    1. I see you have been playing Protection for the last tier or two, if you could play any spec of Paladin what would you play? (and it not effecting your groups synergy or anything - just what spec you want to play)

    2. If I remember correctly you had an enhancement shaman roll-officer in your guild called Urg(?) seemed like a cool guy from what I could tell on streams - Will he be coming back in MoP and will we hear his deep voice on your guilds mumble via streams?

    3. If you had a choice, would you prefer to live stream and live via the add revenue (Getting a lot of viewers like TheOddOne does for league of legends) or make content/be on talk show podcast things like Legendary - Only picking one! ( Somehow the money is the same for both exactly - for the questions sake )

    4. If I remember correctly around the time you were progressing on Warmaster HC you had a job offer from a games company to do some work for them but you couldn't leave because you couldn't work on things like legendary - and it was a big company (I may be miss-remembering, correct me if I am wrong, but the question still stands) - what games companies have you been approached by - for whatever reason to do work for?

Thanks, I understand if you do not want to answer all of these.

    A fan.

    Edit: Reworded question

    1. I prefer Retribution, but I certainly don't mind tanking. I just kind of like smashing things and seeing big numbers :)

    2. Not sure if he'll be coming back for MoP yet. He still hangs out on mumble a lot, though, so I imagine I'll be playing something with him again at some point.

    3. If I had to choose one, I prefer the content creation/podcast side. Livestreaming is fun, but doing it as a living is EXTREMELY time consuming. Content creation is more work, but you get significantly more return on that work.

    4. That's the only company I've been directly approached by -- and it was 38 Studios, so I think I ultimately made the right call :P

Do you think that the encounter design of WoW have been climbing up in difficulty in many ways, being more gear checks, the inclusion of heroics, more gimmicky bosses or just overall more complex boss mechanics? If you do, do you think we will hit a brick wall in terms of encounter design?

I'm not sure we've hit the point where there are no new ideas in encounter design just yet. They keep coming up with new technology to add to boss mechanics in new ways. The most obvious example is the Extra Action Button stuff they did on Ultraxion and Madness, but there's a couple new mechanics in MoP (the "Hide and Seek" phase on Lei Shi, for example). I think as long as they keep expanding what the game is capable of, we'll continue to see new mechanics.

Encounters have definitely been getting more complicated as time goes on, but I don't know that that really relates to more difficulty. Boss mods seem to sort out a lot of the complications, and once the top guilds start killing bosses, the strategies generally become pretty well known which ultimately makes learning the fights a lot easier. Plus, Blizzard's been pretty nerf-happy in recent tiers.

First off, thanks for all the free entertainment you provide the community with.

My question is, what does your/Tankspot's future hold when the time comes for WoW to end? Do you have a contingency plan, or is that not something you see happening soon enough to think about?

It's something that's been in the back of my mind, and is partially why I've started slowly expanding to cover other games than just WoW. Project Titan is still on the horizon as well.

I was actually homeschooled (though I hated it and I am not planning on homeschooling my children if we ever get around to that). I like it downtown, mostly because that's where Arcadia and the Griffin are. Other than that I probably spend most of my time (when I'm not at home) on Beckley.

MikeB has a couple series on his Youtube that I try to keep up with, Indie for Breakfast and TETS: http://www.youtube.com/akamikeb

I also catch some of TotalBiscuit's stuff from time to time, and I watch a good amount of eSports (SC2 primarily, although I'll tune in for other games when I can -- was just watching The International DOTA2 finals last night!)

I used to listen to a podcast called GuyCast a lot, but I don't know if it's around anymore. I haven't had as much time for podcasts now that I'm not working a desk job.

How do you balance your professional needs with your personal life needs? Most people know you are married.. some of us just wonder what you do to keep a healthy structure in your life considering. I know personally.. video games make it hard to keep that balance for me and a lot of others. So yeah.. what do you personally do? :)

My wife is also a bit of a nerd so she's mostly okay with me spending all day on the computer. We do try to get out of the house as often as possible (in fact, we'll be meeting up with some friends at the bar this evening!) Overall though I wouldn't say I have a terribly healthy structure in my life :P

Why does Gary Gannon get swapped out of Legendary sometimes? I'm not throwing stones, but I think he does a better job than the other guy.

Also, do you have any tattoos?

Gary just can't be there all the time. He's a busy guy. This last week he was at PAX.

I don't have any tattoos, mostly because I'm not sure what I'd get.

There's lots of them, but I think my favorite is probably our first Lady Vashj kill. We were in Phase 3, there was ooze everywhere and about a million sporebats up, people were dropping like flies. The last man standing was a Holy Paladin with Divine Shield and Avenging Wrath active. He managed to get a Hammer of Wrath off before he died, but as he died, a Curse of Agony tick finished her off. We'd used all our soulstones and reincarnates on that attempt -- had to run back to get the loot :P

If MoP doesn't live up to theexpectations of blizzard, do you think they'd drop more hints about project titan to retain their player base?

Hmm, tough call. On the one hand, it'd probably keep people interested, but I don't know that hyping up Titan would really do much to retain their WoW playerbase (since they're separate titles).

With just 3 weeks to go until MOP, which number do you think will be bigger: new players or returning players?

Initially, returning players. As time goes on, I imagine Blizzard hopes to pick up a lot of new players. Tough to say whether or not it'll work just yet. How this expansion plays out will say a lot about the state of the MMO industry.

A few questions. Did you go to college? If you didn't have Tankspot or World of Warcraft what would your goal be as far as a job goes? What was your favorite game as a child? Also I'd like to say that I enjoy watching your content and hope to see you around for a while.

I went to college, but dropped out. Didn't care for the particular place I was at. Went to a tech school after, but dropped out of that after I found out it wasn't accredited. Never went back, but may at some point.

Before I got into the whole online personality thing, I was planning on becoming a programmer. Actually spent a while as a PHP/MySQL developer also. Nowadays, I think I'd rather get into game design. It's just something that I've really connected with :)

Favorite game as a child would probably be Sonic the Hedgehog. I played the hell out of that. Labyrinth Zone can suck my balls.

What was the first videogame you ever played?

Oh dear. We had a bunch of Atari games, but I don't really remember them that well (I would have been around 2 or 3 at the time, heh). We had an Intellivision also that lasted us a bit longer, I can remember playing some baseball game on that, plus some sort of naval warfare game and a tank game. Don't remember the names at all :(

What do you think of the newest patch so far?

And to a person that haven't played WoW since the middle of Cata, can you tell me if it's worth it to buy MoP?

    (I'm not into raiding)

And what do you think of the color blue?

Patch 5.0 is cool but there isn't much to do outside of the class changes, which have already been in beta for a while. I haven't really been playing it much for that reason. That's probably fine though, gives me some time for GW2 :)

IMO, MoP is worth it. Plenty of non-raider content being added. Pet battles, scenarios, challenge modes, new BGs and arenas. Whether or not the expansion will overall be successful depends largely on how they proceed moving forward, but I'm optimistic.

Blue's alright, I'm a bit partial to red myself.
