Everything we Know About Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths From the Announcement Stream

This morning was the announcement stream for Magic's next set, Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths. Here's everything we learned from the stream including new cards!

Important Ikoria Information

  • Keyword Counters - Give permanent abilities to creatures such as Lifelink or Menace.
  • New Mechanic: Mutate - If you cast this spell for its mutate cost, put it over  or under target non-Human creature you own. They mutate into the creature on top plus all abilities from under it.
  • New Mechanic Companion - Companions each have a special deckbuilding rule if you want them as your chosen companion.
    • Example from Keruga, the Macrosage: Your starting deck contains only cards with converted mana cost 3 or greater and land cards. (If this card is your chosen companion, you may cast it once from outside the game.)
  • Lutri, the Spellchase has been banned in the Commander format.
  • All the Godzilla cards are being spoiled today, April 2.

  • I Like the idea of the Godzilla series and it gives me hope for other similar series, like a DnD series with a Tiamat themed Ur-Dragon and a Bruenor themed Torbran, if they can do Godzilla i don't think this is too far fetched especially with a Bag of holding being printed in m20. 

    • Also, DnD license is owned by Wizards, so their own franchise.

  • I find it funny how the Godzilla card was originally printed (more info here https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/news/statement-spacegodzilla-2020-04-02 

  • On the plus side: there's a ton of awesome stuff here.  The mutate mechanic might be the coolest CCG mechanic I've ever seen, the "monster" theme is very exciting, and who doesn't want to play with Godzilla and Mothra?

    On the minus side: it's still not enough to call me back to MtG, and if this can't do it for me that means nothing ever will.   :-/  But I do sincerely hope that those of you who are still in it enjoy this on my behalf.

    • isn't it same with magnetize ? For all units except humans like Magnetize being for only mechs but not any other minions ? I don't think this is the coolest ccg mechanic, i mean it is the most problematic ccg mechanic in my opinion. Look at what magnetic has done to Hearthstone for example.

    • Agreed, Mutate definitely looks like it will be an absolute blast! Lack of summoning sickness is a little worrying though lol.

      I'm a little iffy on the "commander" cards being added through the Companion mechanic, I think it might be a bit too powerful, but Wizards is above average when it comes to card game balance and we haven't see the full set of cards yet so I'll revisit that thought later on.

  • Ok, I'll admit: Mutate is FREAKING AWESOME! Might just be what makes me try out the game.

    I think I like it so much because it reminds me of Evolution creatures in Duel Masters, except straight-up BETTER, since the cards are more flexible and less restrictive. Maybe I would've preferred if they were restricted to their creature type (Dinosaurs can only mutate Dinosaurs, that kind of stuff), since it would be easier to balance and would promote tribal decks, which I personally love.

    How do rotations work in MTG? I know they have them, but I don't know when/how often they happen.

  • Godzilla !? really ? :D

    Also i feel like Bristling Boar, Fully Grown and some other cards are also from old sets, They were in core set 2019 iirc.

    • Perhaps "new cards" was a bad way of putting it.

    • Fully Grown is very similar to some existing cards, but it's definitely brand new, since it features the keyword counter mechanic.
