Welcome back to another concept art spotlight for Legends of Runeterra. In the last installment, I looked at the Guardians, which are those little creatures on the gameboard that watch and react to the game in progress. At the end of that installment, I mentioned that we would look at card backs, and here we are right now to do exactly that. All players have the default "Summoner's Rift" card back by default, but can buy more through the in-game shop.
As with the Guardians, all these images come from Kudos Productions.
The Might of Demacia
Garen's cardback, The Might of Demacia, went through phases of focusing on the sword, the bird, then Garen himself. By the end, the finished product appears to use a zoomed in version of I.
The Loose Cannon
Jinx's cardback, The Loose Cannon, had a similar revision history. Over the course of the design, some designs focused on Jinx herself, and others focused on her explosive gadgets. The finished product appears to be a mirrored version of C, along with her right arm used in D.
The Unforgiven
Yasuo's cardback, The Unforgiven, had less concept designs before settling on the final product which ended up being E.
The Tidal Trickster
Introduced in Rising Tides, The Tidal Trickster is Fizz's cardback. Although none of these specific designs would end up being used as the finished product, A appears to be the basis for the final card back.
The Blind Monk
Lee Sin's cardback is the blind monk, which shows off his ability to be a formidable opponent without the ability to see (Toph? No). A would be used as the basis for the finished product, although absolutely any of these could've fit the bill in my opinion.
The Bounty Hunter
Miss Fortune's cardback is The Bounty Hunter, for those who prefer to bring a gun to a sword fight (and why wouldn't you?). C appears to be used as the basis for the finished card back.
Demacia Card Back
Now we go onto the region card backs. These are unlocked when you reach level 25 in the card back's respective region.
Demacia's card back changes mostly consist of background shifts, but one thing that always stayed the same was the sword. The final card back appears to be a zoomed out version of B.
Noxus Card Back
The Noxus card back went through changes of focusing on the region insignia to a warrior of the region. The warrior used in card back C does not appear to be based on any Noxus card in the game, but it seems to resemble the helmeted designs of cards like Trifarian Shieldbreaker, [Hearthstone Card (Basilisk Rider) Not Found], or [Hearthstone Card (Reckless Trifarian) Not Found]. B would be used as the basis for the final design.
Ionia Card Back
The Ionia card back appeared to keep a similar idea of the main focus throughout its development. B would be used as the basis of the finished product.
Shadow Isles Card Back
Shadow Isles similarly also kept one object of focus throughout its entire development.
Piltover & Zaun Card Back
The Piltover & Zaun card back would use its classic cog design throughout its entire development cycle, settling on A to be used as the basis of the finished product.
Freljord Card Back
Freljord's card back stayed very similar throughout its design process, but A would be used as the basis of the finished product.
That would conclude this installment of the concept art spotlight series for Legends of Runeterra. Next time, we'll be looking at something a little more special and exclusive.
Comments
So many great concept art choosing one must have been difficult.
Man, I love the Miss Fortune card back, though I haven't purchased it. All those designs for the Lee Sin one are kind of impressive.
I think Bilgewater and Freljord are my favorite region card backs, though P&Z was the first one I obtained.
