Riot has finally announced their world championship! Here's everything you need to know about this upcoming event.
- The championship will take place in September 2021
- It will be based on performance from 5 seasons (the previous 2, the current 1, and the next 2 upcoming)
- There will be 256 participants total (64 players from each of the 4 shards)
- Participants will be selected based on end-of-season ranking and seasonal tournament results
- The final 4 from each seasonal tournament will be automatically advanced (20/shard)
- 22 will be chosen based on their best placement from 2 out of the 5 seasons
- The remaining 22 will be based on total games won in both the Open Rounds and Playoffs from the 5 seasonal tournaments
- The world championship will be conducted with a few different formats
- First, the 256 participants will compete to earn one of the 16 finalist spots
- Then, those 16 finalists will put into groups to compete in 4-player round robins
- Finally, the top 2 finishers from each group will play single-elimination for the championship
- The prize pool is $200,000

The World Championship qualifiers and finals will take place this September.

I really like the way they are spreading out the opportunities for qualification. Should do a really good job of making sure the top 16 really are the best tournament players in their regions.
A really good pool for a first championship. I don't remember correctly Hearthtone's, but I think it was 100.000 or something like that.
