We've got a wonderfully animated trailer from Riot today to mark the announcement of the next expansion which brings the game's final region, Bandle City, into play. In addition to that, we've been provided a few extra details about the new expansion.
- Beyond the Bandlewood introduces the Bandle City region.
- 126 new cards are being added to the game.
- 9 of these cards will be Champions.
- Multi-Region Cards are a new feature.
- New mechanics that focus on whimsy and discovery will be announced.
You can watch the animation down below.

Whimsy and Discovery ?
Discovery would be like Heimerdinger's mechanic probably and I wish It were not Discover mechanic from Hearthstone. Inventing something would be better i guess.
But Whimsy! ? Hex mechanic is a tech for card games and it's not a general gameplan most of the times. How will they implement it ? It might be with cards like Stonebreaker that has some play effect if you transform X allies or it might be an effect like Misftying MagicianBADCARDNAME that transforms units.
Also, It would be great if all Void champions like Nocturne and others could have double regions as Void/SI and others.
I think you're reading too much into it: I believe "whimsy" is not referring to the card itself, but rather just the idea of good-natured oddness, adventure, and fun.
Nocturne is not a Void champion, he is a demon like Tahm Kench.
Probably irrelevant, but I am pretty sure that the VA for Ava in the trailer is Lara Jill Miller. I can't unhear it.
Just a question from a non LoR player. How many expansions does LoR get per year? Its like for every one hearthstone expansion I'll be seeing two of these.
Each year we will usually get two major expansions and two mini-expansion. The major ones tend to be divided into 3 sets.
They don't have a proper system set in stone because of how regions work. (They need to introduce more cards for the new regions but that's a lot of cards at once so they split it up) When they introduce a new region into the game, they split it up into three parts and these are called expansions whereas a set is a compilation of the 3. Each part consists of cards of the new region, and additional cards for 3 of the other regions while some other regions maybe get a card or two, and they do this three times. This is done usually over the course of 6 months.
So if you're counting "full" expansions it's about 2 per year. However if you're counting mini-expansions, there's about 6 of those per year and not to mention there are also champion expansions where they introduce a new batch of cards for a specific champion or two (kinda like the latest event). There's supposedly a lot of these sprinkled throughout the year so about 8 expansions introducing 40-50 new cards with 2 introducing 100+.
It's complicated and there are a lot of people who have shown clear disapproval of the system due to imbalance and "missing" cards when they introduce only 1/3rd of the full region. However, this system probably is not going to be set in stone because Bandle City is the 10th and final region in the game. So they'll probably scrap the system once this is finished.
And complicated it certainly sounds like. Interesting though. It'll be like hearthstone releasing the expansions by groups of classes every 2 months.
Thanks for the explanation.
So besides the yordles we also have Caitlyn, Senna, Xerath and Sion.
We already have Senna don't we though? Or is this going to be a later "version" of senna with her big Gun from the mini-movie that got released a year ago?
Xerath, I hope to god he is good enough to revive Mono Shurima decks, but not so good as to go into every other region as a splashed champion/deck. Azir getting nerfed annoyed me so much because the issue wasn't Azir, but rather Irelia. They need to nerf her blade dance mechanic, it's just not entirely balanced as it stands now, and yet they keep nerfing Azir thinking it will hurt Irelia, but instead it just hurts anyone who tries to create Azir focused or Mono-Shurima decks...
Sion was one of my early fav champions from LoL so it'll be interesting to see him as what I'm assuming will be a "tanky" champion for Noxus. Noxus so far is all about rushing in, face damage, etc. (Except Swain, but we all know how broken Swain is)
Caitlyn will be PnZ, but not sure how they'll fit her into the region simply because I feel like Ezreal already fits that role pretty well.
-Your right were going to get the big gun version of Senna (The Senna we currently have is a follower the one that's going to get released is a champion).
-Since Noxus is all about dishing a much damage as possible I think that Sion is going to be a big overwhelm unit.
-Mono Shurima is going to need more than just a good champion to be good. They need more cards like buried sun disc, cards that have a powerful secondary effect that activate if all your cards are Shuriman.
Caitlyin! Finally! Sniping commence!
Once we have all the regions what are your thoughts? Are we going to have new regions or just go deeper in the existing one?
From what we've been told, this is it: 10 regions is the limit, and going forward they'll just be filling out the existing regions with more cards. I doubt they would go back on it and add an 11th region: they'd run the risk of spreading themselves too thin.
Still not sure how successful Bandle City will be, to be honest: there are 13 Yordles in League of Legends at the moment, to be fair, with another on the way, but not all of them are associated with the exclusively-Yordle region. Poppy and Kled, for example, seem to have no ties to Bandle City. After the Yordles dry up, what then? No humans or monsters seem to exist in the region; they'd have to start making stuff up at that point.
Easy! Some random champion got alienated from their home region and showed up in Bandle City!
They could even make them Dual-region, just to account for that weirdness, but still have it count as a Bandle City champion.
It's kind of more complicated than that, given that Bandle City is off-limits to outsiders. Humans don't even know how to get there.
With Vex coming in September to league were going to have 14 Yordle champions and Yummi is also from Bandle city.
Poppy and Kled are probably going to be dual region champions.
Targon and Bilgewater are running out of champions as well so we might get some curious inclusions in the not-so-distant future.
I remember them saying LoR will start having exclusive Champs. There's really no other way to go, unless LoL decides to machine-gun new ones.
I personally think it's more likely that they create new versions of existing champions, like how Hearthstone has done for a lot of legendaries like Deathwing and Elise Starseeker. I just don't see how they could possibly introduce 10 LoR exclusive champions every major expansion once they've included all champions from League, and not releasing any new champions also seems like a bad option since that will make new expansions severely less exciting and impactful.
