Yesterday Riot shared a couple of esports updates (as well as a Chip asset kit) regarding both Seasonal Tournaments and the upcoming World Championship 2022 later this year:
- Their original decision to cancel Seasonal Tournament broadcasts has been reverted due to the feedback from the community.
- They're looking to partner with local broadcasters or other third parties for the upcoming seasons.
- Open Rounds for this season (A Curious Journey) will take place on May 14th, with the Playoffs happening a week after on May 21st.
- There will be four qualifying seasons for the World Championship, including the current one.
- No exact dates for World Championships have been decided yet, but it'll take place during the season of October 12th - December 6th, and it will consist of three separate events:
- Regional Qualification Weekend
- Top 16 Group Stage
- Top 8 Finals
- There will be a Worlds balance patch few weeks before the events begin.
Quote From Riot It’d be an understatement to say we saw a lot of feedback around our announcement that we were discontinuing broadcasts for Seasonal Tournaments in 2022 earlier this year. As a result, we immediately went back and started to plan - here’s what we have so far:
- What’s staying the same: A Curious Journey’s Seasonal Tournament will have the same level of official broadcast support as previous Seasonal Tournaments.
- What’s changing: Our regional teams are working on ways to continue to support Seasonal Tournament broadcasts beyond A Curious Journey through local broadcast partners or other 3rd parties. These broadcasts will look different from what folks have seen so far, but we’re excited to explore new ways to deliver Seasonal Tournament broadcasts, and we’ll keep everyone updated as these plans come together.
Thanks to everyone who shared passionate feedback around Seasonal Tournament broadcasts. It’s our goal to make LoR an experience that competitive and casual players, as well as spectators, can enjoy for many years to come, and we’ll keep working with y’all to make that the best experience possible.
Quote From Riot Following up on our announcement of the Legends of Runeterra World Championship 2022 earlier this year, we’d like to share a few key updates on the event. While we aren’t quite ready to share everything just yet, we have a few key pieces of information for competitors aiming to earn their own spot in the championship.
Which Seasons Qualify for the World Championship?
In addition to the results of the A Curious Journey ranked season & seasonal tournament, we will have three additional seasons that factor into Worlds qualifications.
Legends of Runeterra World Championship 2022 - Qualifying Seasons:
- A Curious Journey
- Season running from May 25 - July 19
- Season running from July 20 - August 30
- Season running from August 31 - October 11
When is the World Championship Taking Place?
While we aren’t ready to share an exact date just yet, the World Championship will take the place of the Seasonal Tournament of the season running from October 12 - December 6, and it will be split across several separate events:
- Regional Qualification Weekend
- Group Stage Elimination Round - Top 16
- Finals - Top 8
We’re in the process of locking down exact dates & times now, and we’ll follow up with additional information as soon as it’s ready to share!
Will there be a “Worlds” Balance Patch?
Yes! We’re planning on a balance patch a few weeks in advance of the Regional Qualification Weekend. We’ll keep everyone updated on the timing of that patch, as well as an overview of the planned changes in advance to ensure competitors are prepared for it.
Good luck to everyone competing in the upcoming A Curious Journey Seasonal Tournament, and to everyone else shooting for a spot in the World Championship! We’ll be following up as soon as possible with final dates, times, prize pool information, and everything else you’ll need to know to get ready for the championships!

So they changed their mind on streaming seasonal? That good for the Pro scene.
