Sad news for fans of the mustachioed plumber. Charles Martinet, the actor who has played Mario for nearly 30 years, is now retiring as the voice of the iconic character. He will now take on the role of Mario Ambassador, still sharing the joy of blue overalls and red caps with fans worldwide.

Mr. Martinet has voiced the plumber since 1994, starting with the CD version of Mario Teaches Typing, playing the character in just about every game since then. He also voiced the characters of Luigi, Wario and Waluigi in their numerous appearances. Aside from the Nintendo mascot, Martinet also played various roles in a wide variety of video games, as well being a film and television actor.

No reason was given for his retirement, but given his continued collaboration with Nintendo, it's likely Mario's voice was becoming too taxing. Until we get confirmation that he reprises his role in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, the last game where Mr. Martinet voiced the character is Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope. Regardless, we thank Charles Martinet for every "Wahoo!" he gave us throughout the years and wish him the best of luck in his role as Ambassador.
