We've got a return of catch-up packs coming for Whizbang's Workshop. Things are going to be a little bit different than before though when Blizzard first introduced this concept back in Showdown in the Badlands.
Instead of the 5 sets that were available with the first set of catch-up packs in Badlands, Whizbang's Workshop edition is only going to include cards from the current past 3 expansions that are in Standard. Because of this, there are slight changes to the numbers since there aren't as many expansions in the pool. You will still be getting the same value overall though with the packs. These are a fantastic way to get back into Hearthstone if you haven't been playing for a while.
Quote From Blizzard Catch-Up Packs are back for Whizbang’s Workshop! Just like Showdown in the Badlands Catch-Up Packs, Whizbang’s Workshop Catch-Up Packs include 5-50 cards from previous Standard sets, depending on your collection completion levels for those sets. However, because of the Standard rotation, there are only three eligible sets for Whizbang’s Workshop Catch-Up Packs: Festival of Legends, TITANS, and Showdown in the Badlands. Since these packs pull from three sets instead of five, the details have shifted to meet the overall goal of still giving 5-50 total cards per pack. You can read all the specifics on the updated Disclosure Page.
This new breakdown only applies to 3-set Catch-Up Packs (currently only Whizbang’s Workshop). 5-set Catch-Up Packs (currently only Showdown in the Badlands) will still work as they did before. Each type of Catch-Up Pack is distinct and pulls from an established pool of cards, meaning that Badlands Catch-Up Packs are not updating to Whizbang’s Workshop Catch-Up Packs or changing in any way with rotation.
Quote From Blizzard Support If 3 expansions appear in that Catch-Up Pack (like in the Whizbang’s Workshop Catch-Up Packs example above), each pack will contain between 1 and 17 cards from each of the three expansions represented, with adjustments so that there is a total of 5 to 50 cards per pack. The count of cards per expansion that you will receive will be based on the following percentages and rules:
- If less than 25% for that expansion, you’ll get 17 cards from that expansion.
- If more than 75% for that expansion, you’ll get 1 card from that expansion.
- Between 25% and 75%, you’ll get between 17 and 1 cards, using linear interpolation.
- If the above would result in 3 cards total, a random two of the sets will get an additional card, resulting in a total of 5 cards in the Catch-Up Pack.
- If the above would result in 4 cards total, a random one of the sets will get an additional card, resulting in a total of 5 cards in the Catch-Up Pack.
- If the above would result in 51 cards total, a random one of the sets will get one fewer card, resulting in a total of 50 cards in the Catch-Up Pack.
Examples (for a 3-expansion Catch-Up Pack):
- 20% collection → 17 cards (or 16, to keep total pack size to 50)
- 25% collection → 17 cards (or 16, to keep total pack size to 50)
- 30% collection → 15.4 cards
- 35% collection → 13.8 cards
- 40% collection → 12.2 cards
- 45% collection → 10.6 cards
- 50% collection → 9.0 cards
- 55% collection → 7.4 cards
- 60% collection → 5.8 cards
- 65% collection → 4.2 cards
- 70% collection → 2.6 cards
- 75% collection → 1 card (or 2, to keep total pack size to 5)
- 80% collection → 1 card (or 2, to keep total pack size to 5)/li>
- Fractional average cards are handled via weighted random rounding
- Example: "7.4 cards" means 7 cards, with a 40% chance of an 8th card.

It sounds like a lot of cards, but remember that 80% of them are Common. Worse still, If you are missing cards from just one or two expansions and not the other(s), it's a whole lot of duplicates. AND the more you open, the worse they get -- it drops off pretty quickly.
In other words, you don't want more than a few of them, and you don't want them at all unless you've been out of the game for a whole year or more.
That's some great information to share! You're 100% correct in that you do not want a ton of these packs. They are a super awesome way to bootstrap that collection though if you've been gone a while and I'm happy to see Hearthstone is finally committing to making it easier to get back into the game.
Indeed, I was glad to see them after taking a break for most of 2023, but I definitely got too many. I was only missing two out of the five expansions involved, so I ended up with a LOT of duplicates. On the bright side, I got a lot dust, great for grabbing the legendaries and epics I wanted but lacked the luck to find.
In the end, I probably spent almost as much money as I would have if I'd stuck around and played all year. A big part of that comes from not having earned quest gold or weekly brawl packs, but I'm sure I could have done a bit better if I'd spent less on Catch-up Packs.
Also! It's extremely important to know that the shop will offer you big discounts on expansion packs over the course of your first couple of weeks as a returner or newbie. Don't try to do all your catching up on the first day. Wait for Blizzard to get impatient and send you better offers.
