The developers over at Firaxis, working on Civilization VII, had a livestream talking about their plans for the post-launch of the game. Being their final livestream before the game's launch on February 11, it's fitting to talk about!
We won't be talking about the gameplay that they showcased, if you want to see a deep dive into multiplayer in the Modern Age during their live showdown, you can watch that down below, but they did showcase a roadmap of what is to come for the game.
February: Civilization VII Game Launch
As we can see, we've got a whole year of content updates planned for Civ VII. Early access begins on February 6 with the full game launch 5 days later on February 11.
March: Free Content & New DLCs (1.1.0 & 1.1.1)
In March, the team is looking to release their first expansion in two parts. The first part of "Crossroads of the World" features a new leader Ada Lovelace, who was an English mathematician and writer chiefly known for her work on Charles Babbage's proposed mechanical general-purpose computer, the Analytical Engine. She was the first to recognise that the machine had applications beyond pure calculation.
She is a new leader focused on Science and will take Science gameplay in a new direction. The devs teased that she'd be able to make use of Science in a "fresh and unique experience" with no other concrete details revealed yet.
We'll also see two new civilizations - Carthage and Great Britain. We'll also see 4 new natural wonders added, which is a nice extra bit of content. For free content in the 1.1.0 update, we'll see a Natural Wonder Battle event and the Bermuda Triangle added as a natural wonder. Cartage is a "unique experience" and is considered a spiritual successor to Civilization V's Venice civ.
The later half of March will see part 2 of the DLC drop which includes the leader Simon Bollvar alongside the Nepal and Bulgaria civilizations. This 1.1.1 patch will also see the Marvelous Mountains event and Mount Everest added as a natural wonder for all players, no DLC required. Chilly! It should be noted that each of the new civilizations will also receive their own wonders, that aren't included on the roadmap.
April - September: More!
No exact timing is available right now but we can expect additional content releases during Q2 and Q3.
- 2 New Leaders
- 4 New Civilizations
- 4 New World Wonders
Additionally, we'll see free content updates that focus on events and challenges. This is not the end of Civilization VII though - Firaxis will continue to support the game beyond September 2025 with more information on that coming towards the end of the year.
Sid Meier's Civilization VII launches worldwide on February 11, 2025 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam (which also supports Mac and Linux) and the Epic Games Store. Cross-play multiplayer is fully supported. If you want to check out the whole livestream, you can watch it down below.
