Today is a historic day for Valve! Their games distribution platform, Steam, just passed 40 million concurrent users. This means that on the 2nd of March 2025, at 13:40 UTC, more than 40 million users were logged into Steam at the same time, whether that was to play game, browse the store, or because they forgot to turn it off after start-up. The largest number of users recorded was 40,270,997, which occured at 14:10 UTC.
The number stayed above 40 million for an hour, until 14:40 UTC. This information comes from SteamDB, a site dedicated to charting Steam's activity, including game prices, sales, and, of course, the activity of players. Below is a screenshot of all peak activity registered in the past week, with the numbers edited on top of the chart, but you can check these numbers yourself by visiting the SteamDB page.
And to your right is a glorious view of the Steamalayas mountain range.
The graph shows a fairly steady increase starting on Thursday. Looking at the graph for the past month on the SteamDB, this is a pretty normal curve. People will play more on the weekend rather than the middle of the week, though it's worth noting that Monday has more users than Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.
If we were to look the graph for the past month, taking into account only Sundays, we see a small dip on the 16th of February, but the curve is steadily growing otherwise. So it's entirely possible next weekend will set a new peak.
You can tell when certain parts of the globe are awake by looking at this graph.
As for when Steam will reach the coveted 50 million users, it's hard to tell, as the platform has seen dips and peaks for the past few years. But it's entirely possible, even likely, it'll happen by the end of the decade. If we go by the graph below, Steam's peak activity in March increased by about 3 million users every year, with an almost 4 million increase from 2024 to 2025. If that trend continues, it'll reach 50M in 2028 or 2029.
The peak in March of the past 5 years, makes for a bit of a slope.
What do you think about Steam reaching such hight numbers? Do you think it'll reach 50 million by the end of the decade? Let us know in the comments below.
