Mario Paint Returns! SNES Online Receives a Classic, But Requires a USB Mouse on Switch 1

Published 4 months ago by

Grab your favorite smock and palette, because the Mario Paint game is now available to play with a Nintendo Switch Online membership!

Mario Paint made its original debut in 1992 on the Super Nintendo (SNES) system and came with a special Nintendo and SNES-themed mouse and mousepad.

Bonus points to the first person who makes this mouse USB compatible for the Switch.

Playing Mario Paint on Switch 1

You'll need to connect a compatible USB mouse to play the game on your Nintendo Switch 1 system. Nintendo has specified it must be a "compatible" one, but we have no insights on which mice work on the original console. It is likely that any mouse is standard enough in today's world that it should work, so grab your mouse from your computer and plug it into your dock to get it to work.

In theory a mouse with USB-C connectivity should work as well connected directly to the console in handheld mode... though you won't be able to use the kickstand which may make for an awkward experience.

Playing Mario Paint on Switch 2

If you’re playing on a Nintendo Switch 2 system, you can use the Joy-Con 2 controller like a mouse! Simply detach the Joy-Con from your console and flip it on its side so the sensors can track on a surface to move the pointer. It makes one wonder if we'll see any new titles from Nintendo which make primary use of the Switch 2 mouse sensor.

Mario Paint Music Joins the Nintendo Music App

Last year Nintendo released the Nintendo Music app on iOS and Android and today that app is still getting consistent updates. To celebrate the release of Mario Paint for the SNES on Switch Online, Nintendo has added music from the game to the app.

In total there are 19 tracks available to play with 28 minutes of wonderful music to experience.

You can play Mario Paint by downloading the SNES app on your Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2. What are you going to create?
