Nintendo Shares Financial Report for the Past Quarter - Switch 2 Sells More Than 5.8 Million Units in Its First Month

Published 4 months ago by

Nintendo released their latest financial report, and the first one after the launch of the Switch 2, giving us a glimpse into how well their new console did. Spoilers, it did really well! We're gonna take a look at it, as well as some other aspects of the console, as there's some interesting data here. Let's get into it!

Hardware

According to Nintendo, the Switch 2 sold a whopping 5.82 million units in its first month on the market. That's more than double the sales of the original Switch, which came out swinging with a 2.74 million figure. Needless to say, the Switch 2 is a home run in terms of sales, probably the best-selling console of all time in its first month.

The Switch 1 is still selling, but it has certainly slowed down. Last quarter, it managed to sell only 980,000 units, almost a sixth of the Switch 2 sales, and that's with two extra months on the market. The lifetime sales of the console currently sit at 153.10 million units sold.

It needs another 900,000 units to beat the DS, Nintendo's best-selling console of all time and second best-selling overall, and it might get it with a push from the holiday season. That said, it seems unlikely to beat the best-selling console of all time, the PlayStation 2, which sits at over 160 million. Still, second best is certainly not the worst.

Software

In a shocking turn of events, Mario Kart World is the worst-selling first party title on the Switch 2! That becomes far less shocking when you realize it's also the only game Nintendo reported on. It took a lot of restraint to say that in the titles. That said, it is quite odd there's no other games present there.

If we were to hazard a guess about where the other games are, Donkey Kong Bananza came too late to factor into those sales. The exclusion of Welcome Tour is quite bizarre, since it launched at the same time as the console. Who knows how Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games are counted for this. And there's no other first-party title that released with the console.

Looking at the actual numbers, things really start to get impressive. MKW sold 5.63 millions units, only 190,000 less than the console itself. Assuming no one bought the game and the console separately (which is not the case, but numbers shouldn't be too high), this means a whooping 96.74% of those who got the console got it bundled with MKW.

What's weird is that Nintendo also reports a general Software sale of 8.67 million units. That's a little over 3 million pieces of software not accounted for. Is this the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrades that are available? Donkey Kong Bananza? Welcome Tour? Assuming, of course, that this number doesn't include third party sales. We'll just have to wait for Nintendo's next financial report to find out.
