Pokémon Champions got a release date: The game will be coming to the Switch on April 8th! A mobile release date is slated for May.

Here's a quick rundown of the trailer, plus some extra information from the official site:

  • You'll be able to get various Pokémon into the game either by transferring them from the console games and GO via Pokémon Home.

  • You can also "recruit" Pokémon from Champions directly from a curated selection. By default, those recruitments are temporary, lasting only a week, and you only get one of them.

  • Pokémon battles can be held in 1v1 or 2v2 modes. You'll need a team of 6 Pokémon, and you win when you knock out all your opponent's.

  • The main combat mechanic (at least for now) is Mega Evolution.

  • You'll be able to train your Pokémon by changing their stats or their moves.

  • Winning battles will award Victory Points, or VP, which are the main currency of the game.

    • VP is what you'll use to recruit extra Pokémon, make those recruitments permanent, change their stats and moves, buy items including Mega Stones, customize your character, get music tracks, and more.

  • The game will also have a battle pass (both paid and free) available which will grant you various items, including some Pokémon by the looks of it.

  • A Starter Pack (one per account) is available, giving you 50 extra spaces in your Pokémon Box, a battle song, 30 Teammate Tickets, and 50 Training Tickets.

  • This is going to be a very interesting game. It will be the first time you can have players of all sorts of different Pokemon games move their Pokemon to Pokemon Bank and then battle in one single title that everyone can just access for free (free to start they are calling it, like most Nintendo games that work on mobile, just for the record).

As an example, GO Players that don't play the titles on Switch will now be able to battle someone who played Sword & Shield. Very cool!
