We've got a preview of a new Minecraft patch introducing a lot of new features, including a new biome, a new type of bed to encourage exploration, soft wool stairs and slabs and much more.
This was announced at Minecraft Live a month ago, but now we know much more about them, and the patch can be played early as we speak.
New Biome: Dappled Forest
It's still Summer in the Northern Hemisphere, but the Minecraft team have decided to embrace the Autumn spirit early with the new Dappled Forest biome, complete with trees sprouting red and orange leaves.

If you've been dying to make a Minecraft build for sweater weather, this is exactly the type of place for you. Of course, with any new forest type also comes a new type of wood (more on that later).
Straw Beds
We've all probably been in this situation before, right? You're out exploring, but you need to sleep. You can either hightail it back to the base (and possibly miss the sleeping window), or make an emergency bed to sleep in right then and there.
But there's a bit of a problem with that. By sleeping in a bed, you're also setting your spawn point, and if you happen to die before setting your bed at base as your spawn point again, you'll just go right back to the world spawn.

Is the image dark? Of course it is. It's night time.
The answer to that question is... the straw bed!
Straw beds are crafted with 3 hay bales, which will give you 4 straw beds. Straw beds are single-use beds that allow you to sleep the night away like a regular bed, and then they automatically break.
But here's the important distinction. They don't set your spawn point. This means that if you're out and about, you can plop one of these down, sleep through the night and you no longer need to worry about spawning really far away from your base if you die. A perfect item for travelling.
Shelf Mushrooms
So far, this update seems pretty fun, guys. Get it? Fun... guys?

The shelf mushroom is a new item that can be used decoratively, but it's also a functional platform, and one that also has a bit of a bounce to it. Perhaps that could be useful for cutting down really tall trees.
Will it come with a mooshroom variant? We'll need to see later.
Poplar Wood Set
With our new forest type, we see a new wood type. Introducing poplar wood!

With its distinctly grey color palette and red, orange, and yellow leaves, the poplar wood stands out among the wood family to make for some distinct wooden builds.
I'm sorry, but I agree with everyone who says that the trap door looks like a toilet seat.
Abandoned Camps
The new type of wood and distinctly colored leaves are not the only new part about the new dappled forest.

Every once in a while, you'll run across an abandoned camp (throughout a number of different forest types), consisting of a wooden tent with some loot inside of it. Free goodie hut!
Wool Stairs and Wool Slabs
All of the stairs in Minecraft are made out of something rough and hard like wood or stone. Why can't I have some nice soft stairs to sit on?

Introducing, the new wool stair and slab sets. Available in every color that wool is in, now you can make a soft set of stairs or slabs to accompany your build and give you a soft sitting space when the day is up. Of course, you can't actually sit in Minecraft...
Cushions
... or at least, that was the case before this update.

Gone are the days of needing to fashion chairs out of stairs and signs, or trying to finagle your way with boats or minecarts. Now you have a proper way to sit with the cushion. Cushions are crafted out of wool slabs, which create a cushion respective of the wool color. Sit it in just like getting in a boat or minecart and, voila! You're now sitting on your cushion.
