Save your class packs for even more Madness!

I've been thinking and technically it should work. If you don't open your Mage and Hunter class packs till Madness at the Darkmoon Faire launches, you might be able to get some extra class specific cards from the new expansion due to the no duplicates rule across all rarities. I'm keeping my packs to verify :D

  • Same here! Since I already have all common and rare cards in standard, and probably won't get any epic or legendary anyway, I'll save them for Madness and open them first so I get 10 new cards instead of 10 extras. :)

  • Has this been confirmed?

My previous impression is the card pool from the packs are determined and locked at the time of acquisition.

  • Ben Brode confirmed that pack contents are determined when opened, but that was a couple of years ago. They might have changed it in the mean time. I guess saving the packs until next expansion works, but nobody outside of Blizz can probably confirm this for sure.

  • Yeah, I´ve heard packs will generate cards upon opening, doesn´t matter, when did you get them. That´s why I´m collecting classic packs from Brawls for the Classic cards rewamp..

This way or another, there is no downside of waiting to open those class packs on the release day. I didn´t buy Jaina, nor Rexxar, but will wait with the one pack I got from the Book of Heroes.

  • As far as I remember, the rarities are locked in when buying a pack, but the cards themselves are created when the pack is opened, so yeah, it's a good thing to wait.

No this hasn't been confirmed, but then again we only starting to get class packs now that can range across multiple expansions.

Obviously year of the dragon packs are locked to those 3 expansions, so atm I think only class packs can hold any standard only cards. Could be wrong, but keen to open them first on expansion day and see what happens

What is certain that the rarities are determined upon acquiring the packs, and the exact contents when the packs are opened. Does it work with future sets is probably unconfirmed, but I'd expect you can get new expansion cards from it. At least I've been holding on to my Hunter pack in that hope (foolishly opened my Mage pack without even considering this possibility).

This seems like a really pointless thing for them to do. It requires using memory somewhere to store these rarities, sometimes for lots of packs for a significant length of time (e.g. for about a month with pre-order bundles), all the while there's a chance the data gets lost or corrupted. It surely takes much less CPU time to generate 5 rarities than to choose the cards to fill them, so I cannot think of any benefit to generating them at the time of purchase rather than at the time of opening.

Someone please tell me if I've missed something here, because as it stands this choice annoys my programmer's mind more than any bad card design issue.

I think this incident nearly four years ago was the thing that "confirmed" the rarities being determined upon purchase. It can be that they've changed something afterwards and it no longer works like that, but it doesn't affect the topic itself; you should save your packs.

I am not an IT expert but I think the amount of storage / processing power it takes to store the rarities (not cards) upon purchase is negligible. I can't think of an advantage this has though. Maybe a legal reason? They are advertsing the rarities and in some countries HS falls under gambling laws. Can't think of any other possible reason.

While the memory is certainly very small compared to the data on players' card collections, and in practice the risk of data loss would be more concerning, it is still a silly use of memory. I'm doubtful gambling laws have anything to do with it because it makes no difference to the fact you don't know what rarities you'll get when you buy them.

Whatever, in the grand scheme of things it makes no real difference which way they do it. It's just such an irksome idea.

Anyway, let's not derail the thread too much.

  • that's a great idea! please tell us all if it worked

  • Hey guys, just to close the loop here. I can confirm the mage and hunter class card packs did give me commons/rares from DM Faire, even more madness achieved! :D
