Just My Type - Card Design Competition Discussion Thread

Competition Theme: Just My Type

Sometimes you just need to know who your friends are - and I know exactly the type I'm looking for!

  • You must create a card which has an effect when all minions in your deck are the same type
    • Whether it be Dragons or Demons, Mechs or Murlocs, so long as they're all the same type you're good to go!

We've brushed up on our spells before, but now Lundy wants us to revise those minion types!

As always, I can be reached through Discord or here on the site via PM if you have any issues to report.

Competition Phases

Here are the phases of this card design competition

  • Submission Phase: Starts on Mon, Oct 11 17:00 EDT (GMT -0400). Runs until Sat, Oct 16 17:00 EDT (GMT -0400)
  • Voting Phase: Starts on Sat, Oct 16 17:00 EDT (GMT -0400). Runs until Sun, Oct 17 16:00 EDT (GMT -0400)

Similar designs, so it's a question of preference. Armor gain is usually more expensive and harder to achieve than simply dealing damage with Nature spells, so Zuluhed should cost more than Deathwing Lord Prestor. I personally lean more toward Zuluhed because I want to give a win condition to Dragon Shaman, although the numbers still need tweaking.

If you're curious, "Zuluhed the Whacked" is an actual character, leader of the Dragonmaw clan and even makes an appearance in Gul'dan's Book of Heroes. The weapon is made up, though. Lord Prestor is Deathwing's human form, like Onyxia/Lady Prestor, so I gave them the same statline.

    Finally! I missed this :)

I'd like to know if this artwork is already in use, because it feels very familiar to me. I'm also a bit concerned about the wording.

    Early feedback:

    linkblade91
I haven't played constructed for years, so I don't know which one is more balaced. In terms of flavor/feel, I'd say I prefer Lord Prestor.

    R
I like the effect, it's very good fit for Hunter and a natural evolution from the original character.

That said, the artwork is a bit of a problem. I tried finding a different one, but I couldn't find anything. In case you can't different one, I'd change the character entirely, even if a bit of flavor would be missed in the process.

Finally, about the wording, it should be "your Deathrattles trigger as Battlecries" ("triggers" is for singular, and here it's "Deathrattles" in plural)

    Demonxz95
Dragon Mage has always been about big spells, so this is a good fit.

That said, I don't like cheap cards that have a game-lasting effect, because they're too RNG dependant. I think you should either make it a Start of Game effect or increase the Mana cost so that it's not as polarizing.

My initial idea. While Paladin isn't necessarily the Elemental class, they could have them as a new archetype, and they are also quite spell-heavy. Also having this in Mage would make Ignite Mage even more busted as an additional and cheaper tutor for Chandelier. EDIT - this could be in Priest maybe?

    Welcome back everyone!

A late welcome, but I too was fashionably late to the party last week...

This week however, I am prepared with no less than three cards:

A bold choice, so tell me if I'm in over my head. In mid- to lategame, Zanari hardcounters any deck that insists on yeeting spells in your face. The intended effect is to shift the meta to a more healthy one where decks have both magic AND minions. Similar to C'Thun, the Shattered which prevented control decks from relying on fatiguing their opponents.

More of an alternative to Dr. Boom, Mad Genius. It does require a full Mech deck and only triggers once a turn, so I gave it "Start of Game" to make the deck more consistent. Also, fun fact: the name Rhea means 'flowing stream', which I found rather fitting as streams of data flow between her and the rest of your Mechs, allowing them to move quickly (with Rush!).

Handbuffing spells might not be conventional, but it doesn't seem unnatural for Hearthstone. Elementals and (damaging) Nature spells already go well together, and I think this would be a nice addition. Not completely sure about it's balance yet, maybe it's effect should be limited to 2 or 3 spells?

I know three is a bit much, so there's no need to give feedback for all three, but I would like to hear everyone's favorite.

Let's see how this fella is received.

The main idea, is just a control/value card, a less aggro way for pirates to be played.

But can really grind someone if a Ship's Cannon or Skybarge is up.

These seem like strong finishers for an archetype that otherwise doesn't have a special wincondition. I particularly enjoy how they combine the Dragon deck with another archetype of the classes. I do feel like the Nature spells become a bit too rewarding whereas Armor doesn't immediately interact with your opponent.

As for balance, because the cards focus on the powerful weapons, maybe the minion cost should be increased or it's Attack lowered to pose less of a threat.

    R

    Show Spoiler
I really like the Mech version, mainly because whenever Mechs show up for Hunter, they are often related to Deathrattles, whereas being Beast-exclusive still give you a lot of room to work with. I was also worried about the Deathrattles triggering twice (as Battlecry and as Deathrattle), so 'instead' seems like a good alternative, although maybe it should be a 'Start of Game'-effect or cheaper minion considering it's not as big of a gamechanger and the minion doesn't have any immediate effects.

I think Wailor sums it up pretty well. I would like to add that I think it should 'summon a Fire Rune'. 'Create' sounds like 'discover options to combine into a single card and add it to your hand', like Kazakus.

Maybe change 'its cost' to 'the spell's cost' for clarity. And the current effect also allows you to stack the cost of multiple spells. Is that intended?

    Wailor

    Show Spoiler
It is nice to see Totems get some love.

About the wording: you could change 'have' to 'always have' to clarify that it's a permanent effect or alternatively have it 'set' their Attack equal to their Health.

    Neoguli

I think it reads weird that it's the spells that draw Elementals.

"…whenever you cast a spell, draw an Elemental." seems more in line with Hearthstone.

    Fedrion

    This definitely feels very piratey!

My only concern is that it generates A LOT of stats, most certainly for a Neutral card. You might want to increase it's cost. Alternatively it could "…summon six random pirates that die at the end of the turn…", still providing the control, but only leaving a 6/3 on the board.

    ChickyChick

I really like the integration of a Hero Power. I would recommend to also include the Hero Power itself in your submission.

Also, how do I replace 'Show Spoiler'? I've been wondering for a while now.

    Feedback

    Linkblade91

Both of these are fun designs and the payout for both of them is certainly big. I think I probably prefer Zuluhed the Wicked as Dragon Shaman seems like an interesting archetype to push since Shamans are not typically about Dragons. This is bonus points for me, though I'm not sure how others will feel. Some may prefer Lord Prestor in this regard as it seems like more of a "believable" design choice.

As I did point out, due to the way Gonk, the Raptor works, a single Nature spell that deals damage to multiple characters will allow Dragon's Maw to attack one additional time for each character it damaged as opposed to just a single extra time. This may not matter that much since you'll only get a total of 6 attacks anyway, but it may be something to consider.

    R
Whilst you have already pointed this out, the artwork for Queen Huhuran will be a problem. If you find art for that version though, I would suggest using it over Queen Mechuhuran solely because Deathrattle Beasts are far more plentiful. Although there are quite a few Mechs with big Deathrattles, there's simply not that many Deathrattle Mechs to begin with, especially in Standard.

    Wailor

The art is used for the Totem of the Dead treasure, though it has been long established that artwork that appears on cards that are not available in Constructed are fair game to use for collectable cards, so you are good in this department. I'm not going to judge this as a Standard card since it quite obviously isn't intended to be one as there simply wouldn't be enough Totems in Standard for this to work. In Wild where there are actually enough Totems to make a deck with this effect, you actually might get something good! If the past is anything to go by, it seems to be a very aggressive strategy.

    Neoguli
Quite the interesting combination of class and minion type. A problem I do is the fact that there are only 2 Paladin Elementals in the game (Ragnaros, Lightlord and Benevolent Djinn) and both of them are Wild. Of course, you can use Neutral Elementals, but I'm not sure how I feel about having to rely entirely on Neutral cards for your tribal synergy to function. The effect is certainly creative though. Priest does seem to make more sense to me.

    AeroJulwin

Zanari the Brilliant is quite the effect you've got there. My concern about the effect is that the permanent Elusive effect on your hero is on such high extremes of usefulness depending on matchup. Against some decks, the effect is entirely useless and against others, it just instantly wins the game outright.

Rhea the Mainframe seems like a fine card on its own, but it is unfortunately usurped in practicality by Dr. Boom, Mad Genius which grants ALL of your Mechs Ruch and doesn't require every minion in your deck to be a Mech. This is made worse by the fact that the card is in the same expansion and class as Dr. Boom, Mad Genius. If this was in a different Mech class or perhaps even Neutral, then I think you'd be onto something.

Forest Guardian is certainly a deviation from the norm of this comp, and I mean that in a positive way. I think it'll help the card stand out. Unfortunately, I do think the card is quite a bit on the weak side. I think it could not have the Elemental condition and the card wouldn't be overpowered. Of course it then wouldn't be eligible for the competition though.

    Fedrion

    RIP Captain Hooktusk.

I know it's not quite the same and it's not strictly better, but still, [Hearthstone Card (RIP Captain Hooktusk) Not Found].

    ChickyChick

Caught me at the tail end of writing this.

It is a little bit weird that "Crumbel" sounds so similar to Grumble, but then again we have Lyra and Myra so it's not exactly something I can take away from the card. I think the effect works out quite well. The effect is stronger than either Genn or Baku and the condition seems a lot easier than cutting out roughly half of your collection in deckbuilding, though the fact that the card is class-specific may help alleviate that.

I prefer Lord Prestor. Cause Dragon's Maw effect can be easely abused to burst down opponent.

    Demonxz95
Yes, it's legendary, but it's 1 mana 2/2 with strong effect until the end of game. And its not even tied to spells of Fire School.

    Wailor
Start of game is too much. While almost all totems has 0 attack.

    Neoguli
I can't imagine a elemental paladin. Elementa priest is better, but they supposed to be mage and shaman thing.

    AeroJulwin
Dragon is OP as hell versus mages, Mech is too similar to Dr. Boom hero card. Elemental is better, but don't think that you can give spell damage to spells itself? Wording  should be "If all minions in your deck are Tribe".

    Fedrion
    Capt. Hooktusk on steroids.

    ChickyChick
    Simple, yet effective.

maybe im wrong because im not that good at giving Feedback but shouldnt the first card leave out "the" after equip?

So it would read "If all minions in your deck are Dragons, equip Mace of the Destroyer"

Also - here is my first idea:

Edit: Added the (rounded up) text so i do not have the "stats." as an orphan at the end of the sentence.

New idea. I think the previous one was more original, but this one is cleaner and has some nice paralelisms with Mal'Ganis.

Again, I'm not very happy with the wording.

    FEEDBACK

    Neoguli
The artwork is gorgeous and the idea is nice. I like Aerojulwin's suggestion about the wording. Demon is probably also right about the card feeling more Priest than Paladin.

    Aerojulwin
Zanari the Brilliant is probably my favorite one, but I'd probably make it a Priest card and remove the Divine Shield, so that the text doesn't look so crammed.

Rhea the Mainframe should probably be Neutral, as Demon said.

Forest Guardian looks more like a Druid Beast than like a Shaman Elemental. Since Shaman Nature spells are usually lightning-related, maybe the artwork should be an electric Elemental or something. Besides that, I'd change the effect to "If all minions in your deck are Elementals, gain Nature Spell Damage +2". Buffing spells in your hand is a bit weird.

    Fedrion
I don't know, maybe it's a bit too strong for a 6 mana card. Maybe rise the cost to 7 or 8 and buff the main body's stats?

    ChickyChick
Feels balanced and flavorful enough, not much to add. You should probably make the Hero Power itself, as someone else said.

    FieselFitz
I'm not a big fan of big minions with a huge cost like this one, because they're too much of a gamble, depending on whether your opponent has removal or not.

Alright, I made Lithin more expensive to get rid of its early-drop potential. I might still end up changing "its Cost" to "the spell's Cost" or something like that.

And now it's time for some extra feedback:

    FieselFitz
Well that's certainly quite a design. Unfortunately I can't say that I like it too much. I admire the Murloc werewolf flavor, but there will be many times in which it'll be played and then just removed, resulting in you essentially just blowing up a large part of your deck without any real strategic benefit. It being a 6-Cost Murloc with an effect that wants you to play a traditional swarmy Murloc strategy is a little bit weird.

    Wailor
I quite like its parallels to Mal'Ganis, and I also appreciate that it's something strong that can't be used with The Demon Seed (haha). Pretty good overall.

Card draw with a pretty decent body that can turn into a nice board if your deck is built accordingly:

    Feedback in reverse order:

    Show Spoiler

Demonxz95: Already gave my thoughts on Discord, I'll just mention you should call it 'Dragonfire Rune' on the card.

Wailor: If the set this comes in is paired with some Demons like Pit Lord, it could be extremely powerful. I'd be really careful with Start of Game effects. I like the totem slightly more, but, again, Start of Game effects are dangerous, especially since this basically turns all your totems into better Lightspawn.

FieselFitz: Really big beatstick! Best this can get is around 29/30 if you play it on curve or 23/25 when you'd play around turns 9-10, when you'd expect to (thanks for the math, Echo!), and that's assuming your deck nothing but Murlocs.  Game-winning against Aggro, will probably get you killed against Control and Combo, especially since you're now half a deck closer to Fatigue.

ChickyChick: Pretty good. Stat-wise, it's the same as the Paladin upgraded power, except on a single body. I'd make it cost 7 because a) Benedictus is also a overcosted by 1, and b) this might actually work with Genn Greymane and make the HP 1.

Fedrion: This is pretty damn strong for 6, especially if, like you said, you have Ship's Cannon or Skybarge up (side note: Why is the formatting between these 2 inconsistent? It's the same damn text!). Should probably cost 9 or something like that.

AeroJulwin: Zenari is an automatic no. Rhea is interesting, a weaker effect than Dr. Boom, Mad Genius, but I think the fact it's Start of Game makes it too powerful. I like the Forest Guardian the most.

Neoguli: Nice draw engine the turn it's played, since there's no way it survives until the next one. Odd choice to go Paladin with it.

R: I feel Huhuran is more fitting for hunter, but you'll have to change the art, since that's just Princess Huhuran's art mirrored (tells you how much this saw play because I couldn't even remember her name :P).

linkblade91: I feel Zuluhed is more interesting, though it's hard to judge the balance on either.

Finally, a belated Welcome back! to everyone.

This might be a little overtuned, but I like how this can work in a big demon hunter deck. They can draw a lot cards and its not too hard to get a full hand in order to cheat out a couple of demons.

    Feedback:

    Nirast
This does incentivize running big mechs, and I like how you have to think about building your deck in a way to maximize the effect without losing to aggro. The art looks more fitting for a place like Outland, imo. The boom labs are usually vibrant and colorful.

    Demonxz95
I think it should say "the spell's cost" because "its cost" could be read as "the dragon's cost" when the dragon is played.

    Wailor
I like how Varimathras fits the control warlock strategy well, as it helps you to stay alive during the early turns. That being said, I think I like the totem more. There aren't too many totems in the game, so it stands out more. The effect works well in allowing a more proactive totem shaman deck to flourish.

    FieselFitz
Murloc decks like to overwhelm the opponent by playing a bunch of small ones early rather than building up to a single big one. I think it's too risky to run a minion that eats a large portion of your deck for a pile of stats for 6 mana.

    ChickyChick
I like it. Shaman's upgraded hero power isn't very good compared to the other classes, so this provides an option for creating a shaman deck that wants to use its hero power a lot.

    Fedrion
Filling the whole board with pirates might be a little too much for 6 mana, especially with rush. I would increase the cost or limit the amount of pirates summoned to 3 or 4.

    Neoguli
It does remind me of Lyra the Sunshard somewhat, except it can't chain with the cards added to your hand. Currently, the effect is best suited in priest. Spell paladin isn't really a thing, but there's no reason why it can't be in the future.

    R
I like the mech version more because it is different than being another version of the same character.

    linkblade91
I like both versions, and I don't have a preference for either. I can't help but think that the weapon would be mainly used for face damage rather than as a control tool though.

I'll probably make my card 7 Mana, to prevent trying to use it in even decks, as well as it may work balance wise, and then post it with Hero Power token. Thanks for all feedback.

    linkblade91
These look pretty good, but I feel they would be difficult to include in a deck, mainlythe Shaman one. Warrior one needs you to use Dragon deck, plus armor synergies, you may also include weapon/attack synergies, but it's not necessary, because you still get a minion with good stats and a good weapon. The shaman one also needs you to use spell-heavy with only Dragons as minions, preferably with some attack synergies to be worth it. I'd say I like warrior one more.

    R
I like mech version more, because heaving only Beasts is less restrictive for Hunter. On the other hand, I'm not sure how good changing Deathrattles to battlecries is good, considering that they won't trigger for tokens.

    Demonxz95
I like 5 Mana version more, and I don't think it's op either, considering that Mages don't have dragon-themed decks as for now.

    Wailor
Totem is cool, but Varimathras is way more balanced. Totem would basically give you several 2 or 3 Mana 3/3 minions with pretty good abilities. Maybe giving set amount of attack, like +2 would make more sense, and would keep ability of making totems able to attack. Varimathras is maybe a bit less cool, but is well designed, and have lower potential of breaking a game.

    Neoguli
Djinni seem to be kind of Paladin thing in Hearthstone, but I'd say this could be Priest too. Also, 'whenever you cast a spell draw an elemental' seem to be better wording

    AeroJulwin
If I remember entries correctly, you already submitted, but I will give you some of my insight anyway. I'm not sure if Forest Guardian has to be limited to Nature Spells, because the effect doesn't feel that impactful with the condition, and there's not much non-Nature spells you would want to use with this anyway. Also, I'm not sure if handbuffing spells is something Blizzard would do, but card looks pretty well.

    Fedrion
This feels like a lot of stats, but maybe it's ok, having only Pirates may not be that good, considering they don't have that much synergy between themselves, and if you play cannons (not pirates) this is much harder to trigger

This is the kind of simple, a bit clunky, and unique card which I truly like, but that may be kinda useless to introduce to game. I mean, for me it's 5 stars, but I am not sure how other will feel.

Pretty cool, used well in mech-only deck, but also works quite good when generated randomly, like from Omega Assembly. Balance wise seems good too.

Looks pretty fun, but maybe tad too swingy. Maybe could have lower stats, but I dunno, powercreep been strong lately.

    Ok

Thanks to all for the feedback.

I upped the cost and attack by one.

Thinking straight, a 7 cost pirate, in a full pirate deck, is honestly, bad. Or better said, its balanced, but in reality the only cool aspect of this would be to be able to gain some value in the late game, which in fact, if you're playing a pirate deck and made it to turn 7, you most likely won't win.

Other thing to keep in mind (disclaimer: not really), I'm a purely Wild player, and there this card wouldn't really see the light of day, at least not while the average game ends by turn 7, and I made it with the wild mindset.

@Fedrion - This is not that bad, as the game does have a few higher-Cost Pirates, so maybe you could use this one in Rogue or more control variants of Quest Warrior. Now that I think about it, Bok and Cannon Barrage sounds nuts if either costs (1) less.

Sorry for the radio silence ladies and gentlemen, but I'm on a bit of a Hearthstone break, playing lots of FIFA. Submitted a card anyway because it would have been the first time since these competitions started on OOC if I had not, but yeah. Having a break feels right.

I'll surely make a come back in a few weeks, EA's idea of an in game economy is so outrageously rip off that I won't stand it very long. Good luck everybody!

I'll also apologize, for my lack of feedback: been playing Mercenaries nonstop, plus writing up some stuff about it. Just haven't thought about the comp at all >_> Almost didn't submit on time D:
