The Tribes of Mythgard

Submitted 5 years, 1 month ago by

Hey, folks! So, because I have WAY too much time on my hand, I've decided to see how the Tags in Mythgard (stuff like Valkyries, Vampires, Constructs etc.) are spread out, and I've found some... interesting stuff. A few things before we begin:

  • I've purposefully left out some tags that I don't feel are really useful for this experiment (stuff like 'Life', 'Death', 'Legendary' etc.) as well as the 'Token' tag, though I have counted unique tokens as separate units.
  • I'm also counting units with more than one Tag multiple times for each tag (so Parsa Clarion will be counted twice, both as an Angel and a Zealot)
  • I didn't count any Spells, Enchantments and Artifacts, only minions.
  • I'll be referring to them as Tribes from here on out.
  • Finally, there are a lot of tags with the same number of minions, so I'll group those together and highlight any that I find worth talking about.

Without further ado:

We stand alone

So here's a fun fact: did you know that there are SEVEN Tribes with only ONE minion: Mollusk, Thrall, Dwarf, Elephant, Geomancer, Artist and Shaman. I can only assume Rhino is planning on adding more in the future. (though how many Mollusks can there be?)

It's worth noting that both Eirsdottir and Cataphract are dual Tribe, with their other tribe being FAR more populated.

The 3 biggest Tribes

I've a total of 47 Tribes for this experiments, and most of them share the same number of units (Elves, Heroes and Spiders each have 6 units, for example), but there are 3 that have a lot more units than the others:

It's ruff being the smallest of the biggest...

In case that pun didn't give it away, the third most populated tribe are the Canines, at 17 units. About 35% of these are also Soldiers, thanks to Green's Volkovs. They are also the only Tribe among the 3 that have tribal synergies.

I'm going to Construct a wall!

The second most populated Tribe are the Constructs, with 24 Units. Those are pretty much everything mech, statues that come o life, vehicles  and... food... apparently. Most constructs can be found in Yellow, Orange and Purple.

That's the Spirit!

Finally, the most populated Tribe are, surprisingly, the Spirits, at 26 Units. The most are found in Green and Purple, with 34% and 38% respectively. The rest are spread as such: 1 in Blue, 2 in Red, 1 Token in Orange and 2 dual-colours.

The 3 most diverse Colors

There are 3 Colors in the game that have a good number of Tribes exclusive to them. First, there's Red, with 4 Tribes: Vampire, Minotaur, Satyr and Thrall. Of those, only the Vampires have more than 3 Units.

Then, there's Purple, with 5 Tribes: Avatar, Ninja, Outlaw, Geomancer and Artist. Only first 2 of those have more than 2 Unit in their tribe.

And finally there's Orange, who's in a bit of a weird spot. They have 4 Tribes all their own: Zealots, Angels, Jinns and Elephants

But there's also a 5th tribe that is important to orange, but that it shares with all the other classes: the Centaurs. A.K.A.:

THE HERALDS OF RAGNAROK

Those are, so far, the only Cantaurs in the whole game, and that, along with the obvious thematic connection, make this a very unique Tribe.

Umh... What are you doing here?

So, there are some cards that don't seem to really belong in their tribes, but that make sense upon further inspection that I want to showcase here. For example:

Why is Grinning Kolobok a Construct? Surely it's a Demon or something similar, right? But if you look up it's myth, you'll find that it's actually a type of sentient food, who was "Constructed" in an oven.

Or those two:

Those are clearly people, how are they Constructs? But if you get into the lore of the game, you'll learn about proxys: human-like constructs that people can control from a distance.

Finally, there's Tyr:

Why is the Norse god and 'Undead'? But if you remember, the game takes place AFTER Ragnarok, and Tyr dies in that battle, so the only way he'd be here is if someone brought him back to life.

Closing paragraph

Hope you enjoyed this piece I've put together. I'm going to leave you with a table of all the Tribes I've considered for this, along with the number of units in each (each '*' means there's that many tokens in that tribe):

Nice work, thank you for sharing!

I vote for moar Mollusks and a sea-themed expansion!
