I'm worried that I might be breaking etiquette using emotes... I get that Braum is like "greetings", Jinx is surprise/amazed, Darius is face-palm/mistake, Heimerdinger is thinking, and poro is sad/disappointed, and I think Shen is well-played, but I don't know. Is he supposed to be more like a threat? Have all my attempts to respectfully acknowledge my opponents at the end of the match actually been misconstrued as childish taunts? Am I just overthinking all this?

Shen's emote is a hold palm salute which originates from Chinese culture. It is a greeting / sign of respect so no, you're in the clear on that!
The Shen emote is the only one of the bunch I can't see being used for bad-mannered play.
They are whimsical animated stickers, for crying out loud. They aren't even voiced!
There is no etiquette, and there never will be.
Anyone who has a problem with the way another player is emoting can mute them. Problem solved.

I don't know that I agree with that. Even in the initial closed betas there was a clear etiquette emerging - in the vast majority of games (that I experienced, at least) the Shen emote was used as a 'Well played' salute, usually at the end of the game. So far it's been a polite pleasantry from what I've seen - in much the same way that people will offer 'gg' at the end of a game in other areas, wherein it's less a comment on the quality of the game and more a polite statement equivalent to saying 'good morning' to someone.
I've not seen any emergent etiquette around the other emotes, but if I make the assumption that my experience is representative (which is, admittedly, a difficult leap to make without empirical evidence) then there's precedent... meaning it's wholly possible further etiquette may emerge.
I use Shen as "well played", also most other people I saw using it, used it for the same reason.
Riot is gonna earn the big buck for those emotes for sure! (soon tm)
Personally, I don't like saluting people with Braum. That guy seems ridiculously happy and his existance is a BM completely. Shen emote feels a salute more so I'm using Shen emote as ''Hi/Good Luck".
As much as I know it isn't very sportsmanlike, I occasionally use the Braum emote on an opponent who takes foreeever to make their move - especially in situations where they clearly don't have many possible choices, such as in the early turns or in the late game with few cards in hand. I did the same thing in Hearthstone using the "Hello" emote. It lets me vent my frustration in a non-offensive way.
Other than that, I've barely used any emotes during the week I've been playing the game now. They are funny to look at, though. I kind of hope Riot will introduce new champion emotes to replace the existing ones; they could even make them paid cosmetic items.
So far braum is the most bm emote. Not at the start of the match. But some opponents have used it on a power turn. They do their combo aggro move and just use immediately nraum emote. Very toxic. Some use it at the end when they win. Again toxic. Shen is mostly used at the end most notably by the losing player

More broadly, an etiquette is a set of expected and accepted behaviors. To build an etiquette around these emotes is just setting others up to fail.
Even if someone made a "Snowflake's Guide to Runterra Emotes," you could never be sure any significant portion of the player base would read it, so your expectations and acceptance of other people's usage would still be based on absolutely nothing.

- Forming expectations about how others use stickers is pointless because there is no verbal component, and they can easily mean different things to different people.
- Likewise, the belief that certain usages are not acceptable can never be more than a personal opinion, not a shared social convention.

i guess we found the braum emoter when things go his way. thoroughly explains why emote isnt bad and defends it with his life. yeah im not surprised if you are that kind of guy that doesnt use the emotes as a way to acknowledge your opponent but rather to upset him

That's actually pretty fucking toxic from their point of view, but hey, feel free to act like you're emoting "correctly."

I started this thread because I'm a big believer in the Golden Rule. That doesn't mean prescribing how others should act me or even expecting them to respond in kind, it just means making a little effort on my part to make the world a better place--or in this case, a short game of chance with an anonymous stranger a little more cordial. If they reciprocate, that's great, if they don't, that's OK too. If they want to be rude: that's disappointing but as others have pointed out it is just a game and there is a convenient Squelch feature. I just didn't recognize the Shen emote so I wanted to ensure what I was emoting was being received as intended.
40D, I confess: I'm shocked that someone who uses an avatar from a show obsessed with Immanuel Kant’s categorical imperative would find a mild-mannered discussion about etiquette so hackle-raising. Then again, you did pick Bad Janet over Good Janet, so maybe it is sort of on-brand. :-P I realize you find this whole topic childish and irrelevant; please do not take it so personally. This thread was intended as a fact-finding discussion, not an attack.
@OldManSanns: Your posts on this topic don't bother me at all, but I do get annoyed when people start talking as if an animated sticker is some kind of emotional assault. It makes sense that you might want clarification on the general intent of the emote, even if I will never agree that these innocuous things could ever be used in a truly hurtful way.
I will proudly and unapologetically use emotes however the hell I please to.
