WCDC idea: "Description from the creator" should be visible during the Final Voting stage

Submitted 4 years, 7 months ago by

I think the Description written by creators for cards submitted to the WCDC should be shown during the Finalist Voting phase too. If anything, that description is even more vital during the Finals.

that makes a lot of sense. much better to have a little extra text (which can be put into spoilers, so not even that) during the final vote Than potentially making a card lose unfairly because of lack of context

We don't have any laid-down plans yet for how we will proceed with Season 2 and beyond, but everything is up for discussion! We like that this idea can help reestablish and maintain context with your entries, but it also kind of forces people to actually use the description box whether they want to or not. It could place a lot more relevance on the description than there should be; we want you to focus on the cards, not the essays written about them lol

But again, nothing is off the table. We can see both sides of the argument, and we'll discuss it and report back when it's time.

I second this. Your fear of people putting too much emphasis on the description is understandable but I don't think it will be a big issue. It's still up to the voters to decide if they read it or not and up to the creators if they add one or not.

If Xarkkal doesn't mind I'd also like to add my suggestion of a preview and / or confirmation tool to the submission site to this thread. This would prevent submission accidents like we already have two of this week. Alternatively, you could allow each user to delete their entry and re-submit once every competition as a way of correcting errors. Editing is naturally out of the question as the submissions are immediately up to the vote.

I notice I am confused. Something I believe isn't true. How do I know what I think I know?

I am personally not for the added descriptions for finalists. If your card is good, it should stand on its own and speak for itself, if it needs an essay to explain how it should work or why it is design this way, you did something wrong. But ppl still liked it tho, since it reached finals, so just believe in it.

Similar to how I want us to change voting system so finalists cant vote (I dont want them to be soft-forced to 5-star themselves and 1-star everyone else or be basically penalized for not doing so), I dont want ppl to feel pressured to have to come up with card description, thinking of a flavor text or whatever. In the end, it can even hurt them, if they come up with a bad one, be it for their English skills or whatever else. Yes, it is everyone's choice to do it and you dont have to, but if it would be part of the finals, then it adds extra pressure as something that you now have to keep in mind and do, if you want to increase your chances, which I dont like.

Im going to sidetrack here a bit, but it is related: I always hated when we didnt have a uniform submission format for Class/Expansion Competitions on hpwn, cause when ppl who were more "forum savvy" formatted their posts better, that alone gave them a big advantage over others, since a lot of ppl wouldnt give a poorly formated post a time of day. That is an example of a non-requirement, that was a thing tho and when done right, increased your chances. I view having card descriptions as part of the finals in the same way.

Maybe im going a bit overboard here, but basically my thinking is, the card should stand for itself and shouldnt need anything else, nor should you be "forced" to do anything else but to make a card.

About deleting the submission, I dont think we will be changing this policy, not even for edits, hell especially not for edits. Id sooner prefer delete and resubmit than just edit. It wouldnt be fair to already get votes and then change something. But you did point this out. I do like the idea of previews, I think that should be feasible, eventually, once we have proper tools for it.

I feel like having potentially a short limit on what you could write in that description could work (like a single sentence kind of thing). Not having any context like that would leave potentially new mechanics (or returns of older mechanics that haven’t been used that much, like Rafaam’s artifacts or spare parts) on a lower ground compared to something that more people would already know about. While they don’t specifically *need* that context, as people can figure out some of that stuff, there’s plenty of times where someone might misunderstand it and view the card differently than if they knew how it would work

Who needs consistency when you could have fun?

I believe it should only be reserved for cards that really need it. Something like Zephrys the Great, for instance.

This would require some extra work from mods, however.

That doesnt sound like a good idea, while your card shouldnt need an essay for us to understand how it works, you can still write about it anyway you like as of right now. Creating a character limit just to facilitate this need for finalists to include the description would restrict everyone.
