I just wanted to share this in case it's useful for anyone.. I looked around but couldn't find a definite answer to this elsewhere.
Turns out, if you open a champion capsule from a region that you already have all the champions for, you'll get a champion from another region instead.
For me it was SI.
I wasn't sure if I would just get 750 shards instead of a champion.. but thankfully I unlocked Lee Sin instead.

Yes, because of duplicate protection. Same happens with epics, you won't get "4th copy" until you have all of them.
Yes, with the duplicate protection you also can "condition" your champion capsule to open any champion you want.
Example: You want Sejuani on Freljord capsule, you can craft 3 copy of all 4 other champs (12 cards) to make sure you open it. I know it kinda expensive, but on freljord you already got some starter champs.

Yes I did know about this trick from Swim, but I'd heard some conflicting things about whether or not you could get champions from regions other than the region road you were on.
Anyway I did dig a bit more in the Runeterra website and managed to find confirmation...
OWN EVERY EPIC AND/OR CHAMPION CARD IN A REGION?!
Woah! That's wild! If you own every champion, epic, or both in the Region Road that you're currently on, don't worry. If you draw another Champion or Epic Wildcard, you’ll be granted one from another Region! Own every Champion and/or Epic IN THE ENTIRE GAME?! Even I’m impressed! You’ll be given Shards according to the conversion numbers below. No Runeterran need leave empty handed.
- Epic: 250 Shards
- Champion: 750 Shards
So, yeah... may not be worth it to intentionally craft all Champions, because you'd just be opening shards otherwise.
Question is, what happens when you have all the Champions? I doubt you would get Champion Wild card, probably shards then, eh?
you get 1/4 of the champ, i believe it is 750 shards but i dont get at this point yet so i might be wrong.
I'm technically close to unlocked all champions. I only need 2 Twisted Fates, 1 Gankplank, 1 Swain left to unlock and I currently hold 6 champion wildcards. I could technically unlock all the champions, but I have not had the desire to play Twisted Fate yet. The only reason I don't burn my wildcards to unlock everything is I don't want 750 shards. It seems very inefficient. If I knew getting a duplicate champion would result in a wildcard, I would clean out and unlock.
On a side note, does anyone else have issues unlocking all the rare (blue) cards? I have more wildcards than cards to unlock with champion, epic, and commons, but I still have like 49 rares left to unlock?
