Attack initiative in BG

Submitted 4 years, 6 months ago by

Hey all,

I’ll start with a disclaimer: I don’t play a whole lot of battlegrounds, therefore my analysis might be flawed.

Anyways, Pirates are great fun! I love both the economy and the buff-when-attacking synergy.

But especially the later is causing some problems imo. Late game pirate builds snowball so incredibly hard from their first attack, that any comeback is very difficult. Attacking second in a mirror is a guaranteed loss. Not only that, you oftentimes lose by a lot because the buffs keep coming.
The same goes for the parrot-deathrattle build to a certain extend.
Without a huge divine shield - taunt you are basicly Toast In this meta, after losing the coin flip of attack initiative.

How are your experiences? Have you found a way around that?

I also play BG rarely, and when I do, I don't do well overall. I have a hard time telling whether I'm just bad, or unlucky. Sometimes, I'll aim for a certain tribe synergy, and then get offered NO minions to support it. That just sucks. Ans sometimes, as OP said, the attack order will feel like it just went against me in every way. Other time, I figure I probably could have used my HP better, or placed minion more effectively. Either way, this mode is way more random than the normal game, I think.

Only way to game the random order who goes first is to have one less minion than your opponent (assuming you are both going for full board). Whoever has more minions is guaranteed to go first. This can be helpful, if you can position your deathrattles around your taunt so they get cleaved or you want to guarantee your taunt is hit first for whatever reason etc.

This was a strategy with Splitting Image from The Great Akazamzarak.

Welcome the Blizzard 101 - "Hey gamers!  We have an update for the game you love to play.  Oh, and we totally did a sufficient amount of R&D to ensure that things won't be broken."

Update 5 days later: "Hey gamers!  We have an update for the game you love to play.  Oh, and we totally did a sufficient amount of R&D to ensure that things won't be broken."

Update 3 days after that: "Hey gamers!  We have an update for the game you love to play.  Oh, and we totally did a sufficient amount of R&D to ensure that things won't be broken."

Update 1 week after launch: "Hey gamers!  We have an update for the game you love to play.  Oh, and we totally did a sufficient amount of R&D to ensure that things won't be broken."

Update 9 days later: " So we looked at things they way they are, and listened, like REALLY listened to the community and decided to make changes to the last few updates to make sure to save the gaming experience.  But don't worry, we totally did enough R&D to make sure this is the last update for a while."

A lot of the games I've played today have felt like they boiled down to "please let me attack first", but I feel like that's more just dependent on the builds I like to go for. An example is with parrot builds, which will win a majority of the matchups if you get to attack first and trigger goldrin 4+ times. It's worth taking the 50% chance to have a weaker build when you can guarantee a 50% chance to win no matter what is a risk I think is worth taking and while there are times you just lowroll to oblivion and never get to attack first, that's just the inherent 'downside' of that build to keep it in check. The same for the most part applies to pirates, which can either do the whole scale-on-attack thing or be reliant on salty looter and hogger to scale a ton. When it works its incredibly powerful and so I think its worth the risk of having it sometimes fall flat in combat.
