The Deck of Chaos buff is interesting. I experimented a lot with an big demons/Deck of Chaos deck ever since it came out and this buff might make it viable (as in tier 2-3)
Since I am waiting for Mercenaries to be released, I thought it would be fun to guess what roles the mercs will play in the new mode.
The "roles" I am talking about are the main 3 for dungeon and raid running in WoW: healers, to keep their allies alive, tanks that act as targets and can soak damage, and DPS, or damage dealers.
So now that this is out of the way, I am now going to guess, using Wow class knowledge, what role the Forged in the Barrens mercs might play.
Kurtrus: One word tips me off about Kurtrus; VENGEANCE! In Wow, V DHs are tanks with high mobility and are able to deal heavy AoE damage to enemies. In Hearthstone, he swiftly attacks minions, so that checks out. Maybe fast slashes might bolster Kurtrus' allies
Guff: My best guess for Guff is Restoration Druid, a type of healer. They heal allies equal to their spell power. In BoM, he really isn't the fighting type, instead buffing friendly minions. But don't worry, he can still defend himself with shapeshifting.
Tavish: With all of the animals following him, he is obviously a form of DPS for Hunter called Beast Mastery. They can pair up with a ferocious friend and deal damage. Hunters themselves can shoot with guns and bows, so we can expect some sharpshooting from Ol' Tavish.
Varden: Frost Mages can literally freeze enemies in their tracks and have great AoE with crowd control. Perhaps they can stop the bosses, making them skip their turn. If so, I would sign them up to be on my team in a heartbeat!
Cariel: Due the ridiculous size of that hammer, I am making an educated guess that she is a Ret Pally, a melee DPS. They can heal also a tiny bit. Also, they can cast Avenging Wrath. to buff themselves for damage.
Xyrella: For Xyrella, I am thinking Discipline Priest, a protective healer. They can shield their allies from harm, then unleash the Holy Light on their enemies. They can also heal, making them a jack for all trades.
Scabbs: With steel-tipped shivs and a small stature, this gnome has me confused. I am torn between Assassination and Subtlety. While they are both melee DPS, they are both starkly different. Assassination Rogues use poisons to deal damage between strikes. Subtlety, on the other hand, are quick and stab quickly. I am leaning towards Subtlety, since he works for SI:7 and they are as stealthy as they get.
Bru'kan: His strong connection to Nature makes him a strong contender for a powerful caster DPS spec called Elemental Shaman. They can scorch and shock enemies with strong elemental magic. A valuable asset for a team.
Tamsin: Tamsin belongs to a shadow-magic using DPS spec called Affliction Warlock. They revel in damaging enemies over time, siphoning their life out bit by bit. Pain is in your future if you are fighting one of these. They also summon imps to help you fight.
Rokara: Berserker rage lays in her soul, because she's a Fury Warrior, feared melee DPS. They go into a frenzy, swinging their two weapons to cut their enemies to ribbons. Expect heavy damage.
ALL DONE! I really had fun looking all of this up. Do you agree with my selections for these ten mercs? Any guess what roles the other mercs will play, like the regular Hearthstone heroes?
Your example has some similarities to the emotes issue, but IMO they do not entirely fall in the same category. I do agree with that some long animations are annoying and should be sped up. Shudderwock was the worst offender.
A more similar example would be to have to sit through the NPC telling their story/conversations in the solo adventures. At least with those most HS players probably will not revisit them after getting the reward. Why does Team5 not look at it from the point of view such as that we do not want nor have to login by filling in our password whenever we launch Hearthstone? They have implemented a keep me logged in (or remember my credentials) checkbox for that. Just implement the very same kind of checkbox for (opt-in) auto-squelching emotes in the settings as it is a frequently asked/desired for Quality of Life improvement and be done with it once and for all.
Auto-squelch is something that's been discussed by the Hearthstone team before, but it's not something we're comfortable with. What would likely happen were auto-squelch implemented is that players would enable it after a single incident, and that would be it. They would never reactivate emotes, and as more players did it over time, emotes would largely be devalued.
Squelch exists as it does now as a means to ignore someone being particularly vocal. If someone is just spamming 'thanks' over and over, you have a means to deal with it, and bypass perceived rude behavior. You absolutely have the option to squelch every single opponent you play, and we're comfortable with that. We simply don't want to give players the option to forever disable emotes with the click of a single button.
There's a lot of feedback on this particular issue, and it's something we're constantly evaluating, but that's where we are as a team, presently.
Considering the opinion of Team5 (quoted above) and speaking for us manual-squelchers out there, we can even live with such a setting which could reset itself after installing every patch as a meet eachother in the middle solution.
Having this setting does not hurt anyone that wants to emote; the emoters can still emote until eternity into the void without them ever knowing they were squelched already and it only improves the experience for us squelchers (who never want to get emoted). Thus a net positive, let us see this being implemented and read back in one of the future patch notes please (one can only hope).
Sorry for hijacking this topic to ask for (or at least share my thoughts about) an auto-squelch setting within the game client/app itself 😋 so please continue the discussion about the intentions of emotes.
According to Blizzard we must watch 2 hours (consecutive or non-consecutive) of any Hearthstone stream on Twitch to get 1 Forged in the Barrens pack. Watch for 4 total hours to get another one!
Whatever each players' negative/neutral/positive intention of (ab)using the available emotes is, as Tumbleweedovski stated earlier, an (opt-in) auto-squelch option should at least help out HS players who do not want to interact at all with their opponents whatsoever aside from playing the actual game itself. To this day, I cannot comprehend the reluctant stance/opinion of Team5 on this matter.
Unfortunately it's the same reason why we have stupidly long animations and can't disable or make them very fast: someone worked on them, got paid for it and now we are forced to see/use them in the way they wanted, and not in a useful manner for us
I do think it's significant that neither the Skins or Lab update/rotation went out last week, though. The only reason I can think for them to not deploy alongside the expansion release is because they are integral to the event.
That'd be cool. I don't think there was Lab of Legends during the last event so it'd be cool to see what kind of event-based mechanics/challenges will be introduced for the Labs update.
Imagine spending 3 hours researching & writing this article, and forgetting that they provided that in-game calendar already confirming the event for the 19th. (ー_ー﹡; )
I do think it's significant that neither the Skins or Lab update/rotation went out last week, though. The only reason I can think for them to not deploy alongside the expansion release is because they are integral to the event.
It's Project for sure. They are releasing like 6 skins with it, it's one of their most popular skin lines. The Pentakill event would correlate with new skins for that line, and a new champion added to the band (like Kayle was added as a singer in the second album).
Got a few ideas, but I like this one the best. Not 100% on the flavou, and might make the Overload cost 3. Also, a rare sight for my cards: a custom watermark :P

Wailor
Interesting idea, but it kinda shuts down the rest of the highlander archetype. I guess you could make a deck where you draw all your cards, then use this and Academic Espionage as a finisher, but at that point just use double Augmented Elekk.
linkblade91
Rush version: Pretty cool card, and a great upgrade for Galakrond and the Sparks decks.
Twice version: Not as overpowered as one might think, since making a Highlander Combo deck is easier said than done. Though I wouldn't make it a Battlecry, but a passive effect.
Attack version: My least favorite, personally.
grumpymonk
Caria: Seems a little too strong. Maybe you could make it a passive effect?
Anduin: Kinda boring, though I wouldn't say it's overpowered.
anchorm4n
Cool effect, and there's a few demons that could really benefit from this effect. I like it!
Demonxz95
I prefer the weapon, mainly the one that only draws (lest we forget Patches, the Pirate). I think a 1/2 statline is good enough.
For starters, I responded to the OP jokingly. One could be excused for overlooking the written context, but the ":P" face was there right after the first sentence to hint at the real intent. And if you wish to keep proper track, they actually pointed out how $5 just for one legendary (minus the 5 packs) wouldn't be too bad, hence the subject of the response in the first place.
Yes, pointed out the fact. The initial price was lower, then the changed price was higher. Simple, nothing to debate there. No matter how one might try to twist it, that's the actual account of what took place. Now getting into the what and why of it is the field of speculations and opinions. Just as what should or should not have been.
For whatever reason, you seem very up in arms about it being just an error (which is not something you can know either way without inside knowledge), spinning off from there in various defenses as if I was trying to take them down. Fair to assume it wasn't just some intern manually setting the price and leaving it up for several hours, or we would be seeing such accidents all the time. Maybe it was an alternative that was being considered at one point, baked into the shop as it was. Maybe it wasn't intended to go up at all, maybe after it did the higher ups decided 'nope, let's revert'. What are they going to say officially other than "mistake"? That's all speculation regardless.
But you know, it also doesn't really matter what it was in earnest. It just was, what matters is how it was handled. Call it change, call it correction. The company had the option to keep it as is while adding the missing gold option, and enjoy good press and possible higher amount of purchases. Take that lesson and input and apply it to further deals for older cosmetics. Keep it fair between those who bought first and bought later. They decided against it, perhaps believing $10 still gets them more money and it's what they want to stick to going forward for now. It also sets that precedent where they can always adjust prices of something later on, which is potentially problematic. I can consider it poor handling and faulty thinking due to a number of reasons as listed, just as you can consider it as natural and justified as it gets. That's the only truth.
This does remind me of scouts and pirate burn, even when decks are not that powerful they still get high win rate because they have simple play style, so you are less likely to make mistakes with them. Decks like TF/Aphelios and Lee Sin/Zed ( Before both got nerfed ) still had reasonable win rates despite being overpowered because players at low elo did not know how to play them properly.
I'm not surprised it's doing well given how explosive it's turns can be. It hard punishes any otk strategies, it nullifies slow speed answers, and it essentially makes you rethink how legends is played. I think it's good in the sense that expansions should be transformative, better to design aggressively and nerf later.
The roadmap (available in-client in the news section) promises the event on May 19th. I believe this date has stayed consistent ever since the published the calendar months ago.
So yes, I agree with you that the evidence points towards an event with best week’s patch :) I can’t say for sure about the Labs, etc, but your logic makes sense for those.
My thought is, why Hearthstone decided to use emotes at all, if it's gonna be like what @Modalko said? Why not stick with casual chat? The platform obviously can support it. If it turns out that the opponent is toxic, then mute them, (or better, report them)
Sticking with emote is not a friendly way to say hi, or say thanks to someone without being taken as sarcastic. (And it happened often enough)
Emotes aren't without problems, but there's also quite a lot to be said for them. Even when they are used to frustrate the opponent, their ability to cause offense is practically nil. By limiting players to a handful of relevant emotes, they save Blizzard's customer support from needing to deal with a flood of reports of petulant children swearing at each other.
Plus the emotes are a huge part of what the hero cards and portraits are. Jaraxxus wouldn't have nearly the following he has if it wasn't for his emotes. Other gimmicky heroes (Morgl, Sir Annoy-o, N'Zoth, Hazelbark etc) would lose the most, but even the more tame heroes have a lot of personality bundled up in their emotes that makes Hearthstone a richer experience. Even during friendly matches where I am talking to my opponent through chat, I still use the emotes because they are often just a better way to express some things than a bit of silent text will be.
Finally, I know I wouldn't communicate with my (unknown) opponent at all if it wasn't for the emotes. I'm happy to click 'greetings', 'wow' and 'well played' at appropriate times during a game, but I'd feel much less inclined to say anything if I have to express it in my own words. So the anonymity that encourages some players to be annoying is also what makes it easier for shy players to be friendly. That friendliness might fall on deaf ears most of the time, but not everyone is so jaded that they automatically assume the worst.
Irelia / Az seems crazy strong I drew the exact cards I thought would counter it and got annihilated anyways. I had the blocks for the blade dances. I didn’t have the blocks for stacking elusive. If they got buffed for the first three units summoned it would be fine but as it stands now it feels very powerful. I guess the numbers don’t support that though
I'm quite surprised it still got such a high winrate. For me it's almost a free win. I play mostly midrange decks like EZ/Draven, Ashe Noxus and Dragons. Even my own homebrew Ashe Targon deck beats it. If you can kill the champions you win, if you got lifesteal you win and fury is also a nice counter to it.
I mean this is fantastic, if you couldn't tell by my name I'm a fan of a certain rock band, so this expansion really spoke to me. I love all the references to song names or band names (Black Sa'bat being a particular favourite of mine. The power level is dangerously high, and so it should be, we're designers first, balancers second. I love all the extra bits you've included and the art you've made yourself, truly spectacular job you've done here. Well done!
Every day it passes, I'm more and more certain that people just care about winning and not having fun.
