It's a derpy animation bug I've never been able to find a fix for. Not calling a random number of cards, not trying to bamboozle the opponent, nothing even remotely fancy, just a super straightforward "play this shit 5 times" animation that cuts off early sometimes for some reason.
But yeah, it's not tied to the server in any way, so your five legendaries are always in there.=)
