Who is this?

He came up the road in full plate at a walking pace, and he did not stop at the gate, and he did not answer the challenge. When the guards finally got the helm off there was nothing in it. There has never been anything in it.

Sir Hollowmere is not haunting the armour. Sir Hollowmere is the armour, and it has been fighting for longer than anybody in camp has been alive, and it has become very good at it. It fights clean. It waits for you to ready yourself. It puts you down properly and then it stands there until the next one is ready.

The forge has run all night on this one. Whatever the camp's iron is worth, he is the test of it.

Gourdon came apart in the middle of the field and the grins went out one by one, all the way down the rows. What is left is seed and pulp and a green stain in the soil that nobody wants to touch. The harvest is ruined. The camp is not. Somebody has already started carving a wall out of the pieces.
Chapter 2 DEFEATED

The Bone Broker

The Bone Broker came apart at the joints and the sack split with him. Everything he had taken is back on the grass, and so is everything he took from wherever he was before. The tier two patterns are in camp hands now and the forge can finally move past copper. The ledger burned. Nobody is sorry.

Mother Spindle folded into her own web and the woods went quiet for the first time in a fortnight. The sheets are still out there, acres of them, and they belong to nobody now. The tailors have not stopped working since. Half the camp is wearing silk and the other half is queuing for a loom.

Sir Hollowmere walked up the camp road at dawn, stopped in the middle of it and has not moved since. He is waiting. The smiths understood what he was waiting for before anybody else did, and the forge has not gone cold in two days.
